Stories: How Strong Is Your Tea? The Power of CommuniTea

When we first created CommuniTea, a special blend from the Cape Breton Tea Company, our goal was simple yet profound: to support the Moyo family in Malawi—a family of 25 navigating life in one of the world’s poorest countries. What began as a vision to raise awareness and offer a helping hand has become a lifeline of support and hope. So, how strong is your tea? Strong enough to feed a family, educate children, and grow crops that sustain lives. Thanks to generous purchases and community partners like Wine Country Tai Chi Society, AmplifYOU and High Vibe Leaders, and a dedicated vendor in Sydney, Nova Scotia – The AbiliTEA’s Cafe, CommuniTea sales this year have made a tangible impact:

Education Access: All children in the Moyo family are attending school—boys and girls alike—despite the high cost of education and basic supplies in Malawi. Even teens and young adults who had to stop school are now back on their learning path. Against the Odds: Students walk kilometers daily to school in 40°C heat, often barefoot and without electricity to study by night. They strive to pass exams that determine if they can return next term—there are no automatic promotions in this system.

Hard Work Never Stops: After exams, there’s no summer break. The youth head straight to the fields, joining Stella and little Joseph at the “far away garden” where rice and sweet potatoes are grown to feed the family for months. Manual Labour, Maximum Effort: The land is cleared by hand, seeds planted and harvested manually, and crops transported in 50kg sacks—often by foot, in rubber boots if available. CommuniTea helps fund land leases, farming tools, sacks, and transportation. This blend is more than just a tea—it’s a mission in a cup. With every sip, you’re part of a global chain of love, resilience, and possibility. The Moyo family continually says, “Without you, we were nothing.” But together, we’ve proven that compassion can cross oceans, and a cup of tea can change the world. Thank you for lifting your cup. Thank you for being the strength behind CommuniTea. ~ Charlene Waines, June 25, 2025
