Season 5 Finale – Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell podcast

As we close out Season 5 of Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell, we arrive at a powerful and deeply personal theme—the voice. Not just as a tool for communication, but as a pathway to healing, expression, and transformation.

In this final episode, we are honoured to welcome Karen Novy, a vocal empowerment coach, NLP practitioner, author, and workshop facilitator whose work centers on helping individuals reclaim their voice and step fully into their authentic selves.

Karen’s journey as a breast cancer survivor has shaped her understanding of healing in profound ways. Through her work, she reminds us that our voice is not something external to refine—it is something internal to rediscover. It carries our truth, our story, and our capacity to transform.

The Voice as Medicine

So many of us move through life with a quieted voice—held back by past experiences, self-doubt, or the fear of being seen and heard. Yet, when we begin to explore our voice—whether through sound, tone, or expression—something shifts.

The body softens.
The breath deepens.
The mind quiets.

And in that space, we begin to reconnect with who we truly are.

Karen speaks to the first moment someone discovers their authentic tone—a moment often filled with lightness, surprise, and even joy. It is as though something long hidden has finally been given permission to emerge.

Your voice is not just sound.
Your voice is your medicine.

A Tea to Awaken Memory and Expression

In this episode, we paired our conversation with Sweet Memories, a blend inspired by family, legacy, and love from Creignish, Nova Scotia and Peggy Burke at the Studio Store.

This special Cape Breton Tea Company blend, with the gentle sweetness of strawberry and the grounding richness of black tea, invites reflection and connection.

Strawberry, with its heart-centered energy, encourages compassion, emotional openness, and the sweetness of cherished memories.

Black tea offers grounding and strength, supporting clarity, courage, and the confidence to express one’s truth.

Together, they create a sensory experience that mirrors the journey of finding your voice—soft yet strong, reflective yet empowering.

An Invitation to Experience It for Yourself

This conversation doesn’t end with the episode—it continues in community.

We invite you to join us for the 2nd Annual Healing Through Music and Movement Event hosted by Marathon Jam:

April 18, 2026
FREE Event
Register here: https://www.marathonjam.org/htm

This immersive day is designed to support veterans, first responders, caregivers, professionals, and community members in exploring tools to release trauma and build resiliency.

Participants will have the opportunity to work with an incredible team of facilitators:

Karen Novy – Vocal exploration and authentic expression

Lynn Koonce – Music, Vocal and Creative healing practices

Matthew Seymour – Music and experiential engagement

Colin MacLeod – Music and connection

Michelle Greenwell – Movement, energy, and integrative wellness

Through music, movement, voice, and creative expression, you will be guided into a space of belonging—where healing can begin, and transformation can unfold. It is a true pleasure for Michelle to be working with such incredible NeuroArts specialists in their field.

The Power of Belonging

One of the most profound aspects of this work is the sense of community that emerges.

When we give ourselves permission to be heard, we also begin to hear others more deeply.
When we express, we connect.
When we connect, we heal.

Events like this remind us that we are not alone in our experiences—and that healing is not something we have to navigate in isolation.

Continue the Journey

Closing Season 5… Opening Season 6

As we close Season 5, we reflect on the many pathways to wellness we have explored—through movement, energy, nature, and now, the voice.

And as we step into Season 6, we carry forward a powerful reminder:

Your voice is a magical part of who you are.
To claim it, to explore it, and to enjoy its resonance… is a beautiful life journey.

Let this be your invitation—
To listen inward…
To express outward…
And to trust that your voice matters.

Be well, and we’ll see you in Season 6.

There is a quiet symphony within each of us—one that is always playing, always responding, always listening.

This weekend, in our upcoming Sound Workshop, Ann-Marie Boudreau and I invite you to explore a profound truth: your body is an instrument, and your spine is its central channel of resonance.

The Spine as a Living Frequency Pathway

Often, we think of the spine as a structural support—a column that holds us upright. But it is so much more.

Each vertebra carries its own energetic signature, its own vibrational quality. Together, they form a dynamic pathway through which information, energy, and sound travel. When the spine is aligned and supported, this pathway becomes clear and receptive. When restricted, compressed, or held in tension, the body’s natural resonance becomes muted.

Just like a musical instrument, the body requires space to create sound.

Posture: The Gateway to Resonance

Posture is not about rigidity or perfection—it is about availability.

When we bring awareness to how we sit, stand, and move, we begin to create subtle openings within the body:

Space between the vertebrae

Freedom within the ribcage

Ease in the diaphragm

Fluidity through the fascia

These openings allow sound to travel more freely—not only externally, but internally.

With supportive posture, sound doesn’t just pass through us… it lands, it vibrates, it awakens.

Breath: Creating Space for Sound

Breath is the bridge between structure and vibration.

When we breathe deeply and consciously, we create expansion:

The lungs fill and lift

The ribs widen

The spine subtly elongates

The internal environment becomes more spacious

This spaciousness is essential for resonance. Without it, sound has nowhere to go.

As we deepen our breath, we invite sound to move into the body more fully—touching tissues, organs, and energetic pathways.

Sound as an Internal Healing Force

Sound is not just something we hear—it is something we feel.

Every tone, every frequency interacts with the body’s internal landscape. When posture and breath are aligned, sound can:

Stimulate circulation and fluid movement

Support nervous system regulation

Activate cellular communication

Encourage emotional release

Restore a sense of harmony and coherence

In this way, sound becomes a partner in healing—working from the inside out.

Raising Frequency, Receiving Healing

In our workshop, we will explore both sides of the vibrational equation:

How to raise your internal frequency through posture, breath, and awareness

How to receive healing frequencies through sound, allowing them to resonate deeply within the body

This is not about forcing change. It is about creating the conditions for the body to remember its natural state of vitality, flow, and love.

An Invitation to Listen Within

When we create space in the spine, breathe with intention, and allow sound to move through us, something extraordinary happens:

We begin to hear ourselves more clearly.

Not just physically—but energetically, emotionally, and intuitively.

The body becomes a place of listening.
A place of connection.
A place of resonance.

And from that resonance, healing unfolds.

Awakening the Spine, Spirit, and Senses | August 2026

There are moments when learning, land, and community come together in a way that feels both intentional and inevitable. The Cape Breton Island Energy & Arts Immersion Retreat, taking place in the third week of August 2026, is one of those moments.

This retreat was born from years of collaborative teaching, movement practice, energy exploration, and a deep love of Cape Breton Island — its music, its people, and its natural rhythms. It is an invitation to step out of daily demands and into a living, breathing classroom where movement, sound, art, and energy medicine guide us back to ourselves.

A Retreat Rooted in Embodied Wisdom

At the heart of this retreat is a simple but profound idea:
true learning happens when knowledge is embodied.

Throughout the week, participants will explore layered practices that weave together:

Touch for Health Five Element Theory

The Spiritual Essence of the Spine

Tai Chi and gentle movement

Dance and rhythmic expression

Sound healing and frequency awareness

Intuitive painting

Trauma-informed somatic practices

Nature-based integration and community connection

Rather than teaching these as separate disciplines, the retreat allows them to interact, inform, and deepen one another, creating a rich environment for personal insight, skill development, and restoration.

The Spine as a Gateway to Awareness

A central theme of the retreat is Spine Resonance — understanding the spine not only as a structural support, but as a vibrational and energetic axis connecting body, mind, and spirit.

Through movement, sound, awareness, and creative expression, participants will explore how the Five Elements live within the spine and influence vitality, emotional regulation, intuition, and resilience. These concepts are drawn from Touch for Health, BioEnergetic Wellness, and years of interdisciplinary teaching, offered in a way that is accessible, experiential, and practical. You can learn more in the “About” section for Dr Michelle Greenwell.

Creativity as Medicine

Art, music, and movement are not added extras — they are essential teachers.

Participants will engage in intuitive painting, sound baths, dance, and spontaneous music experiences as pathways for insight and integration. These creative practices help bypass the thinking mind, allowing learning to land in the body and nervous system.

Whether you identify as an artist or not, creativity becomes a tool for listening, processing, and expression.

Trauma-Informed, Gentle, and Inclusive

This retreat is designed with safety, choice, and nervous system regulation at its core.

Trauma-informed movement and sound sessions focus on gentle unwinding rather than force, honoring the body’s innate intelligence and pacing. An introductory exploration of Therapeutic Touch (TT) will also be offered, including simple practices that can be used for personal self-care and within families.

No prior experience is required. All practices are adaptable and invitational.

Learning Through Land and Community

Cape Breton Island is not just the setting — it is part of the teaching.

From Tai Chi in community halls and art studios, to beach walks, farmers’ markets, shared meals, music, and dance, the retreat unfolds across Mabou, Inverness, Creignish, Judique, and the Cabot Trail. These experiences ground learning in place, culture, and relationship.

Community becomes both container and catalyst.

The holiday season is often described as joyful, yet for many it brings a unique blend of emotional intensity, disrupted routines, travel fatigue, richer foods, and less movement than usual. These shifts can challenge the nervous system, impact digestion and immunity, and leave us feeling depleted rather than restored.

At the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health, we believe that small, intentional daily practices can make a profound difference—especially during busy or celebratory times. In a recent Be Well Podcast episode, Michelle Greenwell sat down with Diana Devi to explore how movement, music, and simple nervous system resets can help us move through the holidays with greater ease, clarity, and vitality.

Meet Diana Devi

Diana Devi is a Clinical Pharmacist, wellness leader, podcaster, and Argentine Tango dancer who helps successful professionals look and feel up to 10 years younger by reconnecting with their bodies, confidence, and vitality. With over 30 years of experience in the medical field, Diana brings a deeply integrative perspective to health—bridging pharmacy, nutrition, exercise, and self-care.

As President of An Ageless Life, Diana works with individuals who recognize that feeling older, tired, or disconnected from their bodies can quietly affect confidence, opportunity, and overall wellbeing. Her work combines evidence-informed healthcare with embodied practices that support rejuvenation from the inside out.

An accomplished Argentine Tango dancer and instructor since 2010, Diana teaches tango as a powerful pathway to body awareness, posture, presence, and connection. She views tango not only as an elegant art form, but as a social and somatic practice that gently regulates the nervous system and restores confidence.

Diana is also the host of The Midlife Reset Show with Diana Devi from An Ageless Life with Diana Devi, where she explores modern approaches to aging well, reclaiming energy, and thriving through midlife and beyond.

The Holiday Challenge: When the Nervous System Is Overloaded

During the holidays, many of our usual wellness anchors are temporarily disrupted:

Richer foods and sugary treats become more frequent

Hydration and mindful eating can slip

Exercise routines are often reduced due to travel or packed schedules

Long periods of sitting, visiting, and resting replace regular movement

Emotional dynamics—family gatherings, memories, expectations—can increase stress

These changes can overstimulate the nervous system, leaving the body in a prolonged stress response. When this happens, people may notice:

Lower immunity

Digestive discomfort

Mood swings or irritability

Brain fog and reduced mental clarity

Fatigue that lingers beyond the celebrations

How Dance, Music & Gentle Resets Support the Body

In the podcast conversation, Diana and Michelle explore how dance and music offer an accessible, joyful way to support nervous system regulation. Even a few minutes of movement—especially when paired with music—can help shift the body out of stress and into a state of coherence and balance.

Dance encourages:

Improved circulation and lymphatic flow

Nervous system regulation through rhythmic movement

Emotional release and mood elevation

Reconnection to the body after long periods of sitting

Diana also shares a simple eye reset technique for the nervous system—demonstrating how subtle, intentional practices can create powerful awareness and shifts. During the episode, Michelle experiences new insights into her own nervous system patterns, highlighting how gentle practices often reveal what we didn’t know we were holding.

Nurturing the Body During the Season of Indulgence

Enjoying holiday foods and treats is part of celebration—but balance is key. When paired with nurturing practices like mindful movement, breath awareness, hydration, and calming rituals (including tea), the body is better equipped to process indulgence without tipping into depletion.

In the episode, Michelle and Diana also reflect on oolong tea, including Just Chill’n with its bright touch of cranberry—a grounding companion for moments of pause, warmth, and nervous system support.

Small Daily Practices, Lasting Impact

The message of this episode—and of the season—is simple: you don’t need to add more to your to-do list. By weaving small, nourishing practices into holiday routines—dancing to a favorite song, taking visual breaks, breathing intentionally, or pausing with a warm cup of tea—you can support your immune system, stabilize mood, and maintain mental clarity.

These gentle acts of self-care don’t take time away from celebration—they enhance it.

Listen to the full episode of the Be Well Podcast to explore how movement, music, and awareness can support your nervous system—during the holidays and beyond.

What if creativity is not just an expression of imagination, but a biological necessity for brain health? In this episode of Facing Dementia, we explore the science behind creativity and why the brain cannot function optimally without movement, sensory input, and energetic flow. From the role of the hips and shoulders in supporting cognitive clarity, to the power of music, colour, and frequency in accessing memory and emotion, this conversation reframes creativity as a vital tool for healthy aging. Through mindful rituals, movement, and sensory engagement, creativity becomes a pathway to resilience, presence, and empowered living — even in the face of cognitive change.

In the fourth episode of Facing Dementia, Dr. Michelle Greenwell and Laurin Wittig turn their attention to a powerful yet often misunderstood ally in cognitive wellbeing: creativity. While most research on dementia and brain health focuses on cognition alone, this conversation widens the lens, exploring how creativity emerges from the body, the senses, and the energetic systems that support neural function.

What the Science Says About Creativity and the Brain

Scientific studies consistently show that creative engagement supports neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form new connections, adapt to change, and recover from stress. Activities such as art-making, writing, problem-solving, and imaginative play stimulate multiple regions of the brain simultaneously, strengthening communication between hemispheres and neural networks.

Creativity has also been linked to improved executive function, emotional regulation, and cognitive flexibility—all essential factors in healthy aging. For individuals navigating memory challenges or early cognitive changes, creative practices may slow functional decline by encouraging the brain to find alternative pathways for expression and understanding.

However, much of this research still frames creativity as a mental activity. What is often missing is the foundational role of the body.

Audio Version

Why Movement Is Essential for Brain Function

From a movement science and bioenergetic wellness perspective, the brain cannot operate at full capacity without accurate information about the body’s position in space—a process known as proprioception. This information is largely transmitted through movement of the shoulder seams and hip seams.

The shoulders inform the brain about reaching, interacting, and relating to the world.

The hips anchor balance, grounding, and forward momentum.

When these joints are restricted, the brain receives incomplete data, increasing neurological stress and reducing cognitive efficiency. Conversely, fluid movement of the hips and shoulders enhances sensory feedback, stabilizes the nervous system, and supports creative thinking.

The hips, in particular, are vital energy centers. In many movement traditions, they are understood as reservoirs of vital energy, supporting stamina, adaptability, and clarity—qualities deeply intertwined with creativity and resilience. In Tai Chi we refer to this as the Lower Dan Tien, where the ‘Golden Pill’ or vital energy for the body is built and stored for use later.

Music, Memory, and the Power of Frequency

Much attention has been given to studies showing how music reaches parts of the brain associated with emotion and memory, even when cognitive recognition is impaired. This is especially relevant in dementia care, where familiar songs can evoke vivid emotional responses long after names or facts fade.

Beyond melody, there is growing interest in the role of frequency and vibration. Sound waves influence brainwave states, nervous system regulation, and emotional balance. Similarly, colour frequency—how the brain and body respond to light wavelengths—can affect mood, focus, and energy levels.

Creativity thrives when these sensory frequencies are harmonized. Sound, colour, and movement work together to create an environment where the brain feels safe, stimulated, and supported.

The Five Senses and Embodied Creativity

One of the most accessible tools for supporting creativity and mental health is conscious sensory engagement. When we fully engage our five senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell—we anchor ourselves in the present moment. This reduces anxiety, calms the nervous system, and strengthens memory formation.

Sensory-rich experiences create what are often called embodied memories—memories that are stored not just cognitively, but emotionally and physically. These memories remain accessible even when cognitive recall becomes challenging, offering comfort, orientation, and a sense of identity.

Tea as a Daily Creative Ritual

In this episode, the tea Take the Shore Road becomes both metaphor and nutrition. Featuring blue pea flower, hibiscus, and green tea, this blend supports brain health through circulation, antioxidant protection, and gentle cognitive stimulation.

The affirmation associated with the tea—“Be present and mindful of all that you see when you slow down and check out the view”—reinforces the role of mindfulness and sensory awareness in creative living. Tea rituals invite pause, reflection, and engagement with the senses, creating space for creativity to unfold naturally.

Creativity as a Path Forward

For Laurin, creativity is no longer simply an artistic outlet—it is a strategic and soulful component of her wellbeing following a precursor to dementia diagnosis. Writing, mentoring, movement, and sensory rituals have become ways of supporting brain health while cultivating meaning and joy.

This episode of Facing Dementia reminds us that creativity is not optional. It is an essential biological process—one that connects brain, body, energy, and experience. By moving, sensing, listening, and creating, we give the brain what it needs to adapt, heal, and thrive.

Creativity, it turns out, may be one of our most powerful tools for aging with intention, resilience, and hope.

Special Movements for Hips and Shoulders

In dance and Tai Chi we have the opportunity to inspire the brain. At Tai Chi Cape Breton, our in-person classes empower you several times a week as we meet to bring brain health, memory, clarity, and cognition to the forefront. If you live in the West Kelowna, Peachland area of B.C. the in-person classes with Wine Country Tai Chi Society can support you with many classes through the week. It is a deep immersion that will inspire more reflection and participation for your wellness journey.

Perhaps you want to learn more about Sound and Frequency. Michelle and Ann-Marie Boudreau are teaming up for two special retreats (Feb and March) to support your expansion into the power of your own voice for healing. Check out the events here: Awaken Inner Resonance.

Perhaps you want to be more creative in your writing skills? Stay tuned for our next Steeped in Story event coming soon.

Lastly, perhaps you want to more about healing with energy.

For thousands of years, music and movement have been integral to human culture, not only as forms of expression but also as profound tools for healing. The connection between sound, rhythm, and physical movement has been known to support mental health, emotional resilience, and physical well-being. Today, this ancient wisdom is increasingly supported by scientific research, as seen in the recent release of Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness, edited by Renée Fleming. This groundbreaking book dives into the science behind how music impacts the brain and body, offering a deeper understanding of its transformative potential.

In a recent episode of Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell, I had the pleasure of speaking with Colin MacLeod, an intuitive musician and founder of Celtic Fiddle Guru. Colin has spent years exploring the intersections of music, movement, art, and tea with me, and together, we delved into the profound impact these elements have on our well-being.

The Science of Music and Mental Health

Research in neuroscience and psychology continues to reveal how music influences the brain. Listening to music can stimulate the release of dopamine, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter, while reducing cortisol, the stress hormone. Rhythmic music, in particular, can synchronize brainwave activity, promoting relaxation and focus. These effects make music a powerful tool for reducing anxiety, managing depression, and enhancing cognitive function.

Renée Fleming’s work highlights how music therapy is now being applied in healthcare settings to aid in pain management, support recovery from neurological conditions like stroke, and improve the quality of life for individuals with dementia. These scientific discoveries reaffirm what many of us have instinctively felt—music can heal not only the mind but also the body.

The Role of Movement in Healing

Pairing music with movement enhances its benefits, creating a holistic approach to self-care. Movement stimulates energy flow throughout the body, unlocking areas of tension and promoting physical vitality. As a practitioner of movement-based therapies, I often integrate music into my programs to help students and clients access a deeper sense of connection with their bodies. Colin and I discussed how physical awareness—whether through dance, Tai Chi, or simple rhythmic exercises—can activate the body’s innate healing processes.

Trust and Emotional Transformation

Healing is not just about physical or mental health; it’s also an emotional journey. During our conversation, Colin and I explored the role of trust in transformation. Whether it’s trusting yourself to move in new ways or trusting the music to guide you, this emotional openness creates space for growth and change. Music’s ability to evoke deep emotions provides a unique opportunity to process and release feelings, fostering resilience and emotional well-being.

Special Recordings for Daily Self-Care

As part of our ongoing collaboration, Colin and I are releasing special recordings that combine music and movement to support daily health routines. These tools are designed to open energy pathways, enhance relaxation, and encourage mindfulness. Incorporating these practices into your daily life can provide a powerful foundation for resilience and self-care.

A Shared Journey of Discovery

This podcast episode is part of a series being released for upcoming presentations at the Touch for Health 50th Anniversary Conference in San Diego and the Marathon Jam programs in North Carolina, which support veterans, first responders, and their families. These events highlight how the arts can build community, foster healing, and inspire hope.

Final Thoughts

Music and movement are more than just art forms; they are pathways to healing, growth, and transformation. By integrating these practices into our daily lives, we can tap into the power of the arts to nurture both body and soul. Whether you’re listening to a favorite melody, moving to the rhythm, or exploring your own creative potential, remember that healing begins with trust—in the process, in the music, and in yourself.

Creativity, Transformation, and the Power of Fables: A Journey Through Music

Stories have been at the heart of human connection for centuries. Whether passed down orally, written in books, or woven into the lyrics of a song, stories possess the unique ability to inspire, heal, and transform. At the intersection of creativity, storytelling, and transformation stands Ainsley Hamill, whose latest album, Fables, exemplifies the profound impact of music as a medium for personal and collective growth.

The Art of Storytelling Through Music

Music is often described as a universal language, capable of expressing emotions that words alone cannot convey. Ainsley Hamill, with her captivating voice and poetic lyrics, taps into this universal power by intertwining myth, personal experience, and imagination in Fables. Each song serves as a narrative thread, inviting listeners to journey through themes of love, loss, and renewal. By drawing on the rich traditions of folklore, Ainsley revitalizes the ancient art of storytelling, creating a deeply resonant experience for her audience. Performing in both English and Gaelic, her use of sound and Celtic music add layers of sophistication to the experience for the listener.

Transformation Through Creative Expression

Creativity is more than an outlet; it is a transformative force. Ainsley’s album is a testament to the healing and growth that can arise when we embrace our creative instincts. As she delves into her own emotions and life experiences, she offers listeners a mirror to reflect on their own journeys. Her music invites us to explore the darker corners of our hearts, find beauty in vulnerability, and emerge stronger on the other side. Transformation is not always immediate, but through the melodies and narratives in Fables, we are reminded that growth is a continuous process.

The Guardian Album of the Month – Not Just Ship Land “Her voice thick with velvet and mirk…hovering between the comforting warmth of The Breath and the whip-smart forlornness of early Adele…Hamill has a big intriguing voice, it’s Scottishness ever-present.”

The Power of Fables in Modern Times

Fables, with their timeless lessons and symbolic characters, have long served as tools for reflection and moral understanding. In today’s fast-paced world, these stories provide a much-needed pause, allowing us to reconnect with fundamental truths about humanity and our place in the world. Ainsley’s modern approach to fables breathes new life into this tradition, showing us that these stories remain relevant as guides for navigating change and uncertainty.

Creativity as a Bridge to Connection

Perhaps one of the most powerful aspects of music and storytelling is their ability to connect us to one another. Through her work, Ainsley Hamill creates a space where listeners can find common ground, no matter their background or circumstances. Her songs remind us that we are all part of a larger story, and by sharing our experiences, we can inspire each other to grow, heal, and transform.

Embracing Your Own Creative Journey

Ainsley’s Fables is more than an album; it is an invitation to embark on your own creative and transformative journey. Whether you are an artist, a storyteller, or someone seeking inspiration, her music offers a roadmap for exploring your inner world and expressing it in meaningful ways. Creativity is not confined to art; it is a way of life, a means of shaping our reality and connecting with others.

Final Thoughts

As we navigate the complexities of modern life, the power of storytelling and music reminds us of what it means to be human. Ainsley Hamill’s Fables is a beautiful example of how creativity can transform not only the artist but also the listener. Let her songs inspire you to embrace your own story, find strength in vulnerability, and discover the magic of transformation through creativity.

Dive into Ainsley Hamill’s latest album and let her stories take you on a journey of discovery. Share your thoughts on how creativity and storytelling have impacted your life—we’d love to hear your reflections!
