Wellness is not measured only by what we avoid. It can also be discovered in how fully we choose to live.

What if your calendar could become one of your most practical wellness tools?

Most calendars tell a familiar story: appointments, meetings, errands, deadlines, caregiving responsibilities, and lists of things that need to be completed. Somewhere between all of those obligations, the activities that restore us are often postponed until everything else is done.

But everything is rarely finished. The walk, the cup of tea, the creative project, the music, or the conversation with a friend gets moved to another day.

During a recent Facing Dementia podcast conversation with Laurin Wittig, we explored a different way to organize daily life. Instead of beginning with obligations, what might happen if we first placed the experiences that bring us joy onto the calendar?

We called this simple practice the Joy Calendar.

Audio Version

What Is a Joy Calendar?

A Joy Calendar begins by giving meaningful and restorative experiences a visible place in the day. They are not rewards that must be earned after the work is done. They are part of what creates the energy, clarity, and resilience needed for everything else.

Your calendar might include ten quiet minutes with tea, a walk in nature, Tai Chi or gentle movement, music, gardening, painting, journaling, reading, time with someone you love, or simply watching the morning light arrive.

The activity does not need to be elaborate or time-consuming. A small, intentional experience can change the rhythm of the entire day.

Is It a Joy or a Chore?

One of the most interesting discoveries in our podcast conversation was that many daily activities are not automatically joyful or unpleasant. Much of our experience depends on the meaning, attention, and energy we bring to them.

Preparing dinner may feel like one more task, or it can become a creative act of nourishment. Walking the dog may feel like another responsibility, or it can become an invitation to notice the breeze, birdsong, and changing season. Folding laundry may feel repetitive, or it can become a quiet moment of caring for ourselves and the people we love.

Reframing does not deny that responsibilities require effort. It allows us to notice that changing how we enter an activity can transform how we experience it.

Begin with Awareness

Before changing your calendar, spend a day observing your responses. Which activities cause your shoulders to tighten? Which moments help your breathing soften? What leaves you depleted? What restores your energy? What do you anticipate with curiosity, and what do you approach with resentment or pressure?

This is not an exercise in judging yourself. It is an opportunity to receive biofeedback from your own experience. Awareness helps us recognize what our body, emotions, and energy may be communicating before stress becomes overwhelming.

How to Start Your Joy Calendar

Begin with three experiences you would genuinely enjoy this week. Place them on the calendar before filling every open space with tasks. Choose moments that feel realistic and meaningful rather than creating another demanding wellness plan.

You might schedule a morning drink on the deck, an evening walk, a swim, a visit to a market, time in the garden, an art activity, a favourite summer meal, or a phone call with someone who makes you laugh.

Then consider the responsibilities already on your calendar. Ask whether any of them can be reframed, paired with something enjoyable, shared with someone else, moved to a better time, or completed with more compassion and less internal pressure.

Joy, Emotional Release, and Mental Wellbeing

When life becomes dominated by obligation, the nervous system may have few opportunities to recover. We can become mentally scattered, emotionally reactive, physically tired, and disconnected from what makes life meaningful.

Joyful experiences create opportunities for restoration. Laughter, movement, creativity, nature, music, companionship, and quiet reflection can interrupt familiar stress patterns and make room for emotions to shift. Sometimes a walk allows frustration to move. Music may help sadness find expression. Painting may reveal something words could not reach. A playful experience may remind us that we are more than the challenge we are currently facing.

The Joy Calendar is not about pretending that difficult emotions do not exist. It is about making sure they are not the only experiences receiving our time and attention.

Making Room for the Unexpected

As Laurin and I explored the Joy Calendar, we both discovered more than we expected. When joy receives priority, curiosity often returns. We may try something new, revisit an interest we had forgotten, reconnect with someone, or notice possibilities that were invisible when our attention was consumed by tasks.

A meaningful future is not created only through distant goals. It is formed through the small experiences we choose today. Each joyful appointment becomes a way of moving toward the life we want to inhabit.

A Summer Matcha Moment

This podcast was especially fun to record, and the featured tea added to the sense of summer possibility. Fill Yer Boots! is a Strawberry Matcha with Moringa and Canadian Maple Sugar—a playful blend for a season filled with colour, outdoor experiences, and opportunities to pause.

Strawberry invites sweetness, gratitude, and playfulness. Moringa symbolizes nourishment, vitality, and resilience. Canadian maple sugar brings the reminder that sweetness can emerge through patience, transformation, and deep roots. Matcha offers a vibrant ritual of presence and focused energy.

The affirmation for this blend is:

The heart of this matcha awakens our inner love and lets the sweetness of compassion flow freely to ourselves and others.

Enjoy it warm, over ice, or blended into a summer drink while you sit with your calendar and decide what joyful experience belongs there first.

Your First Joy Calendar Invitation

Before closing your calendar today, schedule three joyful moments for the coming week. Let them be simple. Let them be yours. Then observe what changes—not only in your schedule, but in your breathing, energy, emotions, relationships, and openness to new experiences.

Listen to Facing Dementia – Episode 9: The Joy Calendar: Living Toward What Matters Most to hear more of our conversation with Laurin Wittig and explore how meaningful daily choices can support purpose, resilience, and wellbeing.

Sometimes the most important appointment you make all week is the one you make with yourself.

What are you taking in each day—and are you giving yourself the nourishment you truly need?

In Episode 3 of Emotions & Healing, Dr. Michelle Greenwell is joined by Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND, and Denise Cambiotti, DHC, CIH BioEW, to explore the wisdom of the Earth Element through the Five Element Theory, Touch for Health, and the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula.

The Earth Element invites us to think about nourishment in a much broader way. It includes the food we eat, but it also includes the thoughts, emotions, responsibilities, expectations, and experiences we take in each day. When the Earth Element is balanced, we may feel grounded, supported, compassionate, and able to care for others without losing our connection to ourselves.

The Earth Element: Nourishment, Stability, and Compassion

Within the Five Element Theory, the Earth Element is associated with stability, centeredness, nourishment, and our ability to digest life. It helps us transform what we receive into energy, understanding, resilience, and meaningful action.

When Earth energy is challenged, worry can become constant, caring can become over-responsibility, and compassion can become depletion. We may continue giving long after our own resources are exhausted. We may also find ourselves replaying experiences, carrying concerns for others, or struggling to receive the same care we so readily offer.

The Earth Element reminds us that self-care is not separate from caring for others. It is the foundation that allows compassion to remain sustainable.

Audio Version

The Stomach and Spleen Meridians

The Stomach Meridian supports our ability to receive nourishment and engage with life. It is connected with how we take in food, information, experiences, and opportunities. It also invites us to consider whether we feel supported enough to receive what is being offered.

The Spleen Meridian supports transformation and distribution. It is associated with converting nourishment into useful energy and helping us determine what should be retained, released, or carried forward.

Together, the Stomach and Spleen meridians offer a beautiful metaphor for emotional wellbeing: What are we taking in? What are we holding? What are we transforming? What are we ready to release?

What Are You Digesting Emotionally?

Emotional digestion may include conversations, relationships, memories, responsibilities, news, expectations, and the unspoken needs of those around us. When too much accumulates without time for reflection, movement, rest, or support, the system can begin to feel overloaded.

This does not mean something is wrong with us. It may simply mean we need space to notice what we have been carrying and decide what still belongs in our lives.

Through the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula, we can begin with a goal or intention, notice what we are feeling, activate supportive resources, and invite community and intuition into the process. Rather than forcing a solution, we create the conditions for greater awareness and choice.

Compassion Without Depletion

Many caring people are skilled at noticing what everyone else needs. They remember appointments, anticipate challenges, prepare meals, offer emotional support, and keep families, workplaces, and communities moving. Yet they may struggle to identify what they need themselves.

The Earth Element encourages a healthier balance between giving and receiving. Compassion does not require us to abandon our own wellbeing. Healthy boundaries, rest, nourishment, and support help ensure that empathy remains a source of connection rather than exhaustion.

You cannot pour from an empty cup. The Earth Element reminds us that nourishing ourselves is not selfish—it is the foundation from which compassion, resilience, and wellbeing naturally grow.

Movement, Posture, and the Earth Element

Our emotional state is often reflected in posture and movement. Worry may draw the body inward. Over-responsibility may appear as tension through the shoulders, neck, jaw, abdomen, or hips. Fatigue may change the way we stand, walk, breathe, and engage with the world.

Simple movement awareness can offer valuable information. Notice how you are sitting. Feel the support beneath your feet. Allow your breath to expand gently. Move your shoulders, turn your head, or stand and walk with curiosity. These small observations can help you reconnect with your body and recognize what support may be needed.

Touch for Health techniques and muscle monitoring can also help identify patterns connected with stress, posture, energy, and emotional experience. The goal is not to diagnose an emotion, but to support the person’s awareness and readiness for change.

Tea with Intentions: Symphony of the Earth

Today’s featured blend from the Cape Breton Tea Company is Symphony of the Earth, thoughtfully selected to support the themes of nourishment, grounding, resilience, and perspective.

Peppermint offers a sense of clarity and gentle movement. Its spiritual essence can support the release of stagnation, helping us shift perspective and allow thoughts and emotions to move rather than becoming fixed.

Hibiscus carries an essence of renewal, courage, and receiving. Its vibrant presence can remind us that support, beauty, and nourishment are available to us—not only through what we give, but through what we allow ourselves to accept.

Together, these herbs create a symbolic invitation to soften, receive, and reconnect with the grounded wisdom of the Earth Element.

Affirmation:

“The Earth Element reaches my soul’s calling. The synergy of this blend gently persuades me to shift perspective and receive nourishment.”

Prepare your tea slowly. Hold the herbs in your right hand, breathe, and bring forward an intention for nourishment, balance, or support. After steeping, hold your cup in your left hand to receive. Sip with awareness and allow the affirmation to become part of the experience.

Reflection Questions

What am I taking in each day?

What am I carrying that no longer belongs to me?

Where am I giving more than I am receiving?

What would true nourishment look like today?

What support could help me feel more grounded?

Understanding the Earth Element is an invitation to bring nourishment, awareness, and grounded compassion into daily life. Small practices—movement, breathing, tea rituals, reflection, rest, and supportive community—can become meaningful parts of a personal wellness toolbox.

To continue exploring these ideas, visit the Wellness Training tab at GreenwellCenter.com and learn more about the Movement Mastery Program.

Trauma can change the way we experience our bodies, our relationships, our emotions, and the world around us. Yet trauma does not have to become the final definition of who we are.

In this episode of Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell, I welcome award-winning author and self-help expert Faust Ruggiero, M.S. for a compassionate and practical conversation about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, commonly known as PTSD. Drawing from more than forty years of professional experience, Faust helps listeners understand how trauma can affect the body, mind, and emotions at the same time—and why healing requires more than simply trying to forget what happened.

Audio Version

Understanding PTSD as a Whole-Person Experience

PTSD is often described through memories, flashbacks, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm. However, the experience of trauma can also be held through patterns of protection in the nervous system, changes in trust, difficulty feeling safe, emotional disconnection, exhaustion, and a sense of being unable to move forward.

During our conversation, Faust explains that PTSD exists on a spectrum. He introduces five distinct expressions: the normal stress response, acute stress disorder, uncomplicated PTSD, complex PTSD, and comorbid PTSD. This distinction can help people recognize that there is no single way trauma appears and no single path that every person must follow.

Understanding the type and pattern of stress a person is experiencing can create language for what may previously have felt confusing or isolating. It can also open the door to appropriate professional care, supportive relationships, practical tools, and renewed hope.

Faust Ruggiero and The Fix Your PTSD Handbook

Faust is the author of The Fix Yourself Empowerment Series and one of the most frequently interviewed self-help authors in the world. His new book, The Fix Your PTSD Handbook, offers a structured and empowering approach to understanding trauma and reclaiming a greater sense of control.

Rather than presenting healing as a quick or linear process, Faust emphasizes practical steps, compassionate self-understanding, and the importance of connection. For someone who feels isolated, even a small act of reaching toward another person may become the beginning of change.

You can learn more about Faust Ruggiero and his books at www.faustruggiero.com.

A Five Element Perspective on Trauma

In the podcast, I also introduce the Five Element Wheel as one way to notice how trauma may influence the whole person.

Water relates to fear, survival, safety, and our reserves of energy.

Wood relates to direction, movement, frustration, anger, and the ability to move forward.

Fire relates to joy, connection, communication, and the heart.

Earth relates to nourishment, grounding, worry, and the experience of being supported.

Metal relates to grief, breath, release, and letting go.

This perspective does not replace diagnosis, counselling, or medical support. Instead, it can offer another language for self-awareness. When a person notices fear, grief, anger, disconnection, or worry, these experiences can be approached with curiosity rather than judgment.

Returning to the Heart Through Tea and Intention

For this episode, our featured tea is SoulTEA Harbour from the Cape Breton Tea Company. The blend highlights licorice root and stinging nettle, inviting a pause for nourishment, grounding, and presence.

“Balance and Flow is possible when we open to be present for our true heart’s desires. Come home to your heart.”

A tea ritual does not erase trauma. What it can do is create a small, intentional moment in which we slow down, breathe, notice what is present, and offer the body a different experience. These moments of awareness can become part of a wider collection of supportive choices.

Continue with the Emotions & Healing Series

This conversation with Faust is an important part of a broader exploration of emotional wellbeing. The Emotions & Healing Series offers additional conversations and tools for understanding the emotional wisdom of the body, the Five Elements, and the ways awareness can support meaningful change.

For those navigating trauma, anxiety, grief, emotional overwhelm, or patterns of protection, the series can provide a supportive next step. Each episode offers another perspective, allowing listeners to build a personal toolbox rather than searching for one technique that must do everything.

Support Through Greenwell Center Programs

The programs offered through the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health bring together movement, mindfulness, breath, intention, creative expression, and BioEnergetic Wellness. These approaches are designed to help people increase awareness, explore possibility, and discover practical tools that can be woven into daily life.

Support may begin with something simple: noticing the breath, gently moving the body, setting an intention, sharing in community, or recognizing a small change in how the body responds. The goal is not to force an outcome, but to create conditions in which the person can discover what supports greater balance, connection, and forward movement.

Explore current offerings and resources through the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health.

Artfilled Wellness: Healing in Community

For those who feel drawn to a more immersive experience, the Artfilled Wellness: Cape Breton Island Energy & Arts Immersion Retreat offers an opportunity to explore wellbeing through movement, music, intuitive art, nature, poetry, sound, tea rituals, and community.

The retreat is not about escaping life for a few days. It is about living within experiences that encourage curiosity, belonging, creativity, awareness, and the possibility of seeing yourself differently. For someone who has spent a long time in protection or survival, supportive community and creative engagement may open a gentle doorway toward reconnection.

Healing Is Not a Straight Line

Trauma may create patterns that once helped us survive. Healing invites us to notice when those patterns are no longer serving the future we want to create.

There may be moments of progress, uncertainty, rest, frustration, courage, and renewed connection. The process is personal, and no one should feel pressured to heal according to someone else’s timeline.

PTSD is not your identity. It is an experience your system has carried. With appropriate professional care, compassionate support, practical tools, and opportunities for awareness, new possibilities can emerge.

Listen to the full conversation with Faust Ruggiero on Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell, and continue exploring the resources that help you feel informed, supported, and less alone.

Caregiving is often described as an act of love. It can also become one of the most physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually demanding roles a person will ever hold.

In this episode of Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell, I welcome author and caregiver advocate Sandy Andress for a heartfelt conversation about what it means not only to care for someone you love, but to continue finding moments of connection, meaning, resilience, and hope along the way.

A Book Born from Lived Experience and Faith

Over the past five years, Sandy has walked the caregiving journey with two of her siblings. Following the death of her sister in 2024, she felt led by God to write Caregiver’s Guide as a source of practical support and encouragement for others who unexpectedly find themselves in the role of caregiver.

At the heart of Sandy’s work is one essential message: you are not alone.

While many caregiving resources focus primarily on protecting the caregiver from exhaustion, Sandy’s approach also explores how to build and maintain a healthy relationship with the loved one receiving care. Her book and workshop offer guidance for open communication, self-reflection, navigating healthcare relationships, and recognizing both personal strengths and areas where additional support may be needed.

Audio Version

From Surviving Caregiving to Thriving Together

For this conversation, I wanted to move beyond the familiar discussion of caregiver burnout and ask a different question:

How can caregivers thrive with the people they love?

Thriving does not mean that every day is easy. It does not erase illness, loss, uncertainty, or fatigue. Instead, it creates space for both people to continue experiencing relationship, dignity, choice, tenderness, humour, rest, and moments of joy.

Sometimes thriving is found in a meaningful conversation. Sometimes it is sharing a cup of tea, sitting quietly together, asking for help, or recognizing that the caregiver’s wellbeing matters too.

Caregiving becomes more sustainable when generosity does not require us to give ourselves away.

GenerosiTEA: Compassion in Action

For this episode, I chose 1897 GenerosiTEA from the Cape Breton Tea Company, with the affirmation:

“Open your heart to hope and optimism, for your resilience and pure generosity inspire others.”

The spiritual essence of currant and blueberry working together offers a beautiful reflection for caregivers. Blueberry invites wisdom, nourishment, and resilience. Currant carries renewal, vitality, and quiet strength.

Together, they remind us that true generosity is not about becoming depleted. It is about supporting our own vitality so that what we share with others comes from a place of steadiness and renewal.

This also opens an important distinction between sympathy, empathy, and compassion. Sympathy and empathy can sometimes draw us so deeply into another person’s experience that we begin carrying their pain within our own body. Compassion allows us to remain loving, present, and connected without losing our own centre.

Compassion is generosity in action when our care for another person also honours our own wellbeing.

Two Simple BioEnergetic Wellness Tools for Caregivers

Each episode of the podcast is intentionally shaped through the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula so that listeners do more than hear a conversation. They are invited into an experience of awareness, activation, reflection, and rejuvenation.

1. Emotional Stress Release Points

Place your fingertips gently across your forehead, just above your eyebrows, and breathe slowly.

These Emotional Stress Release points can help calm a busy mind, reduce the feeling of overwhelm, support clearer problem-solving, and create space for new possibilities to emerge.

For caregivers who are continually making decisions, organizing appointments, communicating with family members, and responding to unexpected challenges, this brief pause can help restore a sense of centre before taking the next step.

2. Cook’s Hook-Ups

Part 1: Cross one ankle over the other. Stretch your arms forward, cross one wrist over the other, interlace your fingers, and gently bring your hands toward your chest. Take several slow, comfortable breaths. Part 2: Put your feet side by side, and then place your fingertips together and place infront of the belly. Relax and breathe deeply.

Cook’s Hook-Ups can support calm, sleep, clearer thinking, reduced tension, connection, and communication. It can be practised by the caregiver, by the person receiving care when appropriate, or together as a shared moment of settling and reconnection.

Sometimes becoming calmer ourselves completely changes the interaction we are having with someone else.

Bringing the Book to Life Through the Workshop

Sandy’s workshop transforms the principles of Caregiver’s Guide into practical, everyday application.

Participants explore what open communication can look like in real situations and receive a companion workbook with reflection questions, exercises, and practical worksheets. Sharing is always optional, allowing each person to learn and reflect within a safe and compassionate environment.

Participants will receive a copy of Caregiver’s Guide, a companion workbook, practical caregiving resources, and space within the book to record appointments, medications, treatment details, notes, and personal reflections.

The workshop is designed to help caregivers leave feeling seen, supported, renewed, and better equipped to care for both their loved one and themselves.

You can find the workshop details here: https://www.facebook.com/share/1EadfD3D5F/

You can order the book here: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0H5L2SP69?ref_=cb_interstitial_us_ca_desktop_unrec_location_unk_dp_dp

A Reflection for the Caregiving Journey

As you reflect on your own experience, consider this question:

What might make caregiving feel a little lighter—not because the circumstances change, but because your relationship with them does?

Perhaps a new boundary is needed. Perhaps it is time to ask for help. Perhaps you need rest, a clearer conversation, or permission to experience joy without guilt.

The smallest shift in awareness can become the beginning of a very different journey.

Listen and Learn More

Have you ever noticed how certain thoughts or beliefs seem to repeat in your mind, almost on autopilot? These “stories” we tell ourselves—often originating from family patterns, early experiences, or deeply ingrained cultural expectations—can subtly shape our decisions, our confidence, and even our physical well-being. For many, these patterns fuel self-doubt, perfectionism, and what’s commonly referred to as imposter syndrome. But the good news is that these stories are not set in stone. With awareness, intentional practice, and the right tools, we can rewrite them, releasing blocks and opening the way for personal growth and goal realization.

How Our Bodies Hold Self-Doubt

Modern neuroscience and psychophysiology show us that the mind and body are deeply interconnected. Repetitive negative thoughts, such as “I’m not enough” or “I can’t succeed,” create stress in the nervous system and impact our organ systems. Chronic stress can lead to imbalances in the endocrine, digestive, and cardiovascular systems, which in turn affect energy, focus, and emotional regulation. Bioenergetic research suggests that unresolved emotions and repetitive thought patterns can manifest as tension, stiffness, or fatigue in specific regions of the body, effectively “holding” the story of doubt within us.

Fear and self-doubt have always been the greatest enemies of human potential – Brian Tracey

The Science Behind Rewriting Our Stories

Our program, The Stories We Tell Ourselves, integrates several evidence-based methods to address these deeply rooted patterns:

1. The BioEnergetic Wellness Formula
This approach recognizes that the body’s energy systems are not just metaphors—they influence mood, clarity, and action. By identifying areas where energy is blocked or stagnant, we can target specific interventions to restore flow, allowing the body and mind to work in harmony. Research in energy medicine and psychophysiology supports that intentional movements, focused breathing, and mindful awareness can shift these patterns and create measurable improvements in emotional and physical balance.

2. Goal Setting with Flow and Intention
Neuroscience shows that goal setting and visualization activate the prefrontal cortex, improving executive function and decision-making. When combined with the release of self-limiting beliefs and embodied awareness, goal setting becomes more than just a cognitive exercise—it becomes a holistic practice that aligns mind, body, and energy systems, supporting real-world results.

3. Awareness and Activation Practices
Movement-based activations—rooted in Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and bioenergetic techniques—stimulate circulation, nervous system regulation, and somatic awareness. These practices help participants notice where tension and doubt reside in the body, allowing energy to flow and new perspectives to emerge. Studies in somatic therapy suggest that body-focused interventions can accelerate the release of long-held emotional blocks, increasing resilience and confidence.

4. Intuitive Insights
Facilitating with Dr Michelle Greenwell, CIH BioEW, is Theresa Stone, an intuitive medium. She contributes personalized guidance that uncovers hidden aspects of personality and patterns that may be holding participants back. While not purely scientific, research in psychology supports that reflective and externalized perspectives—especially those that provide validation or new insight—can improve self-awareness, decision-making, and emotional regulation.

5. The Power of Journaling
Multiple studies highlight the cognitive and physiological benefits of journaling. Writing about emotions and personal narratives can reduce stress, clarify priorities, and reframe negative beliefs. Journaling helps solidify insights gained from activation exercises and intuitive guidance, making the learning experience both reflective and actionable. How do you move yourself forward with journaling, we will share the best approaches to create that momentum.

Register Here

Empowerment Through Awareness and Action

Together, Michelle Greenwell and Theresa Stone guide participants through a process that is uniquely integrative. By combining bioenergetic techniques, mindful movement, guided introspection, and personalized insights, the program empowers participants to:

Release repetitive self-doubt and family-imposed limitations

Restore balance to the body’s energy and organ systems

Set clear, aligned intentions for personal and professional goals

Gain new self-awareness and insights that propel growth

This is not just a program about self-reflection—it’s a science-informed path to creating measurable change in thought patterns, energy flow, and life direction. Participants leave with tools that are practical, empowering, and transformative, ready to approach life with a new compass and a sense of inner balance.

In a world that often pulls us in many directions at once, the ancient wisdom of Five Element Theory from Chinese Medicine offers a powerful framework for understanding balance, flow, and meaningful change. Rather than viewing health as a collection of isolated symptoms, this system invites us to see the body, mind, emotions, and spirit as an interconnected ecosystem—one that is constantly responding to how we move, think, feel, nourish, and live.

At its heart, Five Element Theory provides a roadmap. And just like any journey, transformation works best when we know where we are going.

That is why an essential part of our Symphony of Radiance series is helping participants establish an overarching goal—a personal GPS that guides each movement, meditation, and moment of awareness. This destination might be living with less pain, sleeping more soundly, choosing nourishing foods with ease, increasing flexibility, lifting mental fog, calming emotional patterns, releasing old stories, or simply moving forward with greater vitality and joy.

Tai Chi, Lok Hup, and the Language of Change

Our focus on Tai Chi and Lok Hup provides multiple entry points for creating change within the body. These movement systems gently engage posture, breath, intention, and internal mechanics to influence circulation, fascia, joint mobility, and nervous system regulation. Over time, these practices help unblock stagnant pathways and restore communication between organ systems, muscles, and the brain.

Rather than forcing change, Tai Chi teaches us how to listen—to recognize where we are holding tension, where energy is stuck, and where flow wants to return. The movements taught in each class become practical tools participants can return to throughout the week, helping them identify blocks and support forward momentum long after the session ends.

Beginning with the Body’s Inner Intelligence

Participants who register for Symphony of Radiance receive a guided opening meditation designed to introduce them to their own organ systems and enhance their natural function. This meditation creates space to tune inward, notice patterns, and set a meaningful intention that aligns with the Five Elements.

In Week One, we begin by balancing the Central and Governing Meridians, foundational pathways that influence posture, spinal health, and overall system regulation. These meridians support the eyes, ears, nose, taste, smell, brain function, mental clarity, and internal balance. During this opening session, participants are invited to choose a weekly goal—supported by these systems—to anchor their experience and guide their awareness.

NeuroArts: Where Science and Creativity Meet

What makes Symphony of Radiance truly unique is its NeuroArts approach—integrating movement, sound, colour, imagery, and frequency to support the highest healing potential. Research continues to show that sound vibration, visual imagery, and rhythmic movement influence brainwave patterns, nervous system regulation, emotional processing, and cellular communication.

Nature photographer Tanya Levy brings grounding imagery that reconnects participants to the rhythms of the natural world, supporting calm, clarity, and restoration. Marian Egan’s intuitive paintings capture the energetic essence of each session, helping participants anchor what wellness felt like as old patterns and beliefs are released.

Each week, musicians Colin MacLeod, Donna Hutchison, and Brenda Bowen Cox trade off offering intuitive and therapeutic music chosen specifically to support the organ systems being explored. Sound becomes a living partner in the process—moving stagnant energy, calming the nervous system, and opening pathways for healing.

An Orchestra of Opportunity

Dr. Michelle Greenwell has created what can only be described as an orchestra of opportunity—a carefully curated environment where the arts, movement, and medicine come together to support physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual harmony. Her work is grounded in decades of dedicated study of movement patterns, organ systems, and the energy systems of the body, and how they function together as an intelligent whole.

This is not about fixing what is broken.
It is about remembering how to move forward—gently, clearly, and with intention.

Your Invitation

If you have not yet registered for Symphony of Radiance but feel the resonance of this work as you read, we invite you to listen to that inner signal. This 12-week journey offers a compassionate, science-informed, and creatively rich pathway to reclaim balance and wellbeing.

Ready to join in on choosing the perfect tea each week?

With each class we will be exploring the impact of herbs that support the specific organ systems. The Cape Breton Tea Company was created with the Five Elements in mind. For central and governing, you could choose To Be Honest, Old Faithful, or Awesome Island Passion. What will you bring to the table tomorrow for class, and let’s infuse our tea together.

When we think about success, we often imagine discipline, hard work, and long hours of effort. But what if success could also come through ease, flow, and harmony? This is the foundation of the Touch for Health Synthesis—a powerful program that blends ancient wisdom, modern techniques, and practical tools for everyday living.

A Formula for Success

The full Touch for Health program is built on a unique formula that goes beyond physical wellness. Participants learn to:

Set intentions and goals for clarity, ease, and flow throughout the day.

Develop awareness of subtle cues from the body about imbalances in the systems.

Activate energy techniques to bring muscles, thoughts, emotions, and motion into harmony.

Release pain, restore coordination, enhance memory, and calm emotions for a clear and focused mind.

Touch for Health isn’t just about “fixing” what’s wrong—it’s about cultivating harmony so that body, mind, and spirit work together with balance and vitality.

A Window into Ancient Wisdom

One of the most powerful aspects of Touch for Health is muscle monitoring, which provides insights into the body’s energy systems. This connects directly to the Five Element Theory of Chinese Medicine, and Dr Goodheart’s research in applied kinesiology, which links muscles, meridians, organs, and elements in a way that makes healing and self-care accessible.

With this knowledge, participants discover how to apply energy balancing techniques to daily life—whether that means reducing stress, supporting health goals, or releasing old patterns that no longer serve them – BioEnergetic Wellness.

Colin MacLeod’s Story: Music in Harmony

Sometimes the best way to understand the power of Touch for Health is through the experiences of others. Musician Colin MacLeod discovered that by learning Touch for Health, his relationship with music transformed.

He found new freedom in his playing—less tension, more fluidity, and a deeper connection to his instrument. The stress and effort he once carried into performance began to dissolve, replaced by effortless expression and joy.

Colin’s story shows how this system doesn’t just support physical wellness—it expands creativity, intuition, and self-expression.

How Might Life Feel Different?

It’s natural to wonder: Could this really work for me? Touch for Health offers tools to bring balance into every aspect of daily life. Imagine:

Feeling less tension in your body.

Moving through your day with clarity and ease.

Approaching your goals with confidence and empowerment.

Releasing effort so joy and creativity can flow naturally.

It sounds almost too good to be true—but time and again, students find that these simple techniques make a profound difference.

Upcoming Opportunities

If you’re curious to experience Touch for Health for yourself, here are upcoming opportunities to join us:

Did you know that your Dan Tien is a warehouse for energy if you are cultivating its power daily? How are you dynamically sitting and engaged in your health and wellness throughout the day?

The post Recharging the Mind first appeared on Greenwell Center for Holistic Health.

Mental Fatigue, Tai Chi and the Lower Dan Tien Warehouse of Energy

In our modern world—characterized by long hours at a desk, in traffic, or staring at screens—mental fatigue has become a pervasive drain on our vitality. Far beyond mere tiredness, mental fatigue impairs cognition, reduces creativity, and chips away at our emotional and physical well-being. When the mind grows weary, the body reflects this in posture, strength, flexibility, and movement challenges.

The Science of Mental Fatigue & Tai Chi’s Recharge Power

For thousands of years Tai Chi has been a practice for longevity and health, and as modern science tries to catch up to the golden nugget for its success, it is discovering more about Tai Chi as a powerful antidote to mental exhaustion.

One groundbreaking study found that just 20 minutes of Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) effectively alleviated mental fatigue and enhanced cognitive recovery in college students performing sustained mental tasks. The TCC group showed better reaction times, lower fatigue ratings, and signs of improved attentional control compared to aerobic exercise or no intervention (Frontiers). Often an activity reserved for seniors, the power to support our youth is incredible.

A 2024 meta-analysis of 13 randomized controlled trials found that Tai Chi (and related mindful movement practices like Qigong and Yoga) significantly reduced fatigue while improving anxiety, depression, and sleep quality in people with chronic fatigue or post-COVID syndrome (MDPI). A current state of distress does not have to remain, slow gentle movements can move us through what is felt as unsurmountable chronic conditions.

Broader reviews reinforce Tai Chi’s psychological benefits—lowering stress, depression, and anxiety by modulating the autonomic nervous system and shifting toward parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) dominance (ResearchGate, PMC). Tai Chi is a way of living, and instead of looking at our body as separate systems needing to be regulated, we need to begin considering a whole body approach that is empowered by our actions, not being fixed repeatedly by our occasional actions to one part of the body.

For those suffering conditions like fibromyalgia, Tai Chi has outperformed other exercise forms in improving sleep, reducing pain, and boosting quality of life. For those with an injury or chronic condition the principle of 40% effort is key to success. Effort needs to be less than this amount to gain the most significant results.

Even for sleep disturbances in otherwise healthy adults, a 2025 review of 22 clinical trials found Tai Chi increased total sleep time by over 50 minutes, reduced time awake at night by 30 minutes, and helped people fall asleep faster—benefits that lasted for up to two years (New York Post, Woman & Home). Key to this research is that Tai Chi as a way of living creates habits that support regulation of systems throughout the day so that sleep is not sacrificed by poor daily habits that flow into nighttime routines.

Modern research demonstrates what practitioners for thousands of years have known: Tai Chi is more than gentle movement, it’s a potent practice that rejuvenates the mind and supports resilience.

The Lower Dan Tien: Your Internal “Warehouse” of Energy

In Traditional Chinese Medicine and Tai Chi, cultivation of energy (Qi) begins in the lower Dan Tien, also known as the elixir for life, or storehouse. This area of the body, also called the Solar Plexus Chakra, or Lower Abdomen is the energetic core of the body. It is a way to be connected to our roots or grounding while helping us to digest our emotions and live a more heart centered life.

From this center, energy flows can flow upward towards the heart (middle Dan Tien) and head (upper Dan Tien) to nourishing mind and spirit, if these gates are open and feeling vitality. When movement, breath, and attention guide Qi into the lower Dan Tien, energy is conserved and balanced to provide space for the other gates or Dan Tien’s to open.

Prolonged sitting, like hours behind a screen or wheel, can sever this connection. Without activating the hips or engaging the center, energy drifts or leaks, leading to fatigue and health imbalance. Tai Chi’s essence is in its rhythm of expansion and contraction—opening and closing—that energetically charges the center, replenishes the lower Dan Tien, and enables stored Qi to be accessible throughout the day.

A Harmony of Body, Mind, & Spirit

Tai Chi’s beauty lies in how it blends internal awareness with gentle external movement.

Seated forms inspire fluidity and rhythmic circulation, spiral and diagonal movements to shift sedentary routines. This can be considered dynamic sitting.

Standing forms refine posture alignment and release of tension, whole body grounding, and awareness of internal mechanics at the hip and ankles with rotations that build up circulation and bone marrow health.

The internal work, guides our breathing and open movement, shifts us from “stress-eating” to nourishing—encouraging deeper breath in challenge, clearer thought, and openness to creativity, perspective, and possibility.

The motto “less is more” underscores that Tai Chi isn’t about force, it’s about letting go, awareness, and finding an instructor who can help you to feel and expand the internal subtleties, creating the space for each movement to be incredibly impactful.

Getting Started: Guidelines for New Practitioners

Find a qualified instructor, in-person or online, who emphasizes internal mechanics—not merely surface forms.

Begin with introductory classes or a recorded series, like our “Movement and Music” program with intuitive musician Colin MacLeod and movement specialist, Dr Michelle Greenwell PhD CIH BioEW. These sessions help ease into tissue release through both movement and sound. In the introductory series you can enjoy learning and understanding the first 21 moves of the 108-movement meditation set, building awareness of how each posture activates the lower Dan Tien and begins the healing process.

Practice regularly—even short daily sessions can sustain energy and prevent accumulated fatigue. When you have a break, or need a break, have one or two movements at your fingertips to bring the body, mind, and spirit back into balance before carrying on with your day.

Cultivate mindfulness: coordinate breath, movement, and attention to feel the Dan Tien engage and recharge.

Remember: less is more. Allow small, effortless movements guided by awareness to anchor the energy.

Where to Learn

Greenwell Center for Holistic Health (Cape Breton Island, Route 19): Join in-person Tai Chi classes, found in the calendar on the website: www.greenwellcenter.com

Register for the Online “Movement and Music” program. Join the current session, and purchase the Introductory course so you can build your knowledge and expertise with practice opportunities daily.

The Bigger Picture: You as Energy Ambassador

Your choices—mental, physical, emotional—shape your energy, satisfaction, and healing potential. Tai Chi teaches us:

To reframe stress not as depletion, but as a cue to return to the Dan Tien.

That nourishment can come from mindful movement—not only from a plate.

That creativity, perspective, and resilience emerge when energy flows harmoniously.

And above all: you are your own health ambassador.

Closing Reflection

As you pause at your desk or navigate your day, ask yourself: am I draining my supply, or recharging my reservoir? Tai Chi offers a gentle, inwardly powerful path to recharge, creating a warehouse of energy ready for any moment. The journey is less about grand gestures and more about mindful alignment, breath, and awareness. With “less is more” as your guide, and a trusted instructor to tune your sensitivity, your lower Dan Tien becomes your quiet core of vitality—and your daily ally in energy, health, and living fully.
