Finding Peace in the Present: Coherence, Grief, and the Healing Power of Now

Healing does not happen in the past.

Healing happens in the present.

In the second episode of Resonance Rising, in the Be Well with Dr Michelle Greenwell podcast, we explore one of the most essential and often misunderstood aspects of healing: presence.

Peace is not passive. It is not avoidance. It is not the absence of challenge.

Peace is an active state of coherence.

It is the moment when breath, body, emotion, and awareness begin to align—allowing the nervous system to regulate and the body to shift out of survival and into repair.

In this deeply compassionate conversation with Ann Smets and Ann-Marie Boudreau, we explore what happens when we stop bypassing our emotional lives and begin allowing what is present to move.

Audio Version

The Physiology of Presence

When we are overwhelmed, the body narrows its focus toward survival.

Breath becomes shallow.
Muscles tighten.
Digestion slows.
Hormones shift.
Immune function changes.

The body becomes efficient at protection—but less available for healing.

This is why presence matters.

When the body feels safe enough to slow down, the nervous system begins to regulate. Heart rhythm stabilizes. Breath deepens. Digestion improves. Repair becomes possible.

This state is often described as coherence.

Research in nervous system regulation and heart-brain communication suggests that coherent states support improved emotional regulation, clearer thinking, and more efficient physiological recovery.

Peace, in this sense, is deeply biological.

Grief in the Body

One of the most important truths explored in this episode is that grief is not only emotional.

It is physiological.

Unprocessed grief can live in the body as tension, fatigue, numbness, constriction, anxiety, and chronic dysregulation. When grief is suppressed, the body continues carrying the energetic load.

This is one reason emotional suppression is so often linked to chronic stress patterns and dis-ease.

Grief is not something to conquer.
It is something to move.

Ann-Marie brings profound insight from her work in grief care, sound support, and palliative presence—reminding us that expression is not weakness. It is physiology in motion.

Sound as Release

Many traditional cultures understood something modern systems often forgot: sound helps us move emotion.

Keening, wailing, chanting, lamentation, and intentional vocalization have long served as pathways for grief, release, and collective healing.

These are not dramatic expressions.
They are biological ones.

Sound gives shape to what the body cannot always articulate through language.

Voice creates movement.
Breath creates space.
Tone creates release.

This is one of the most compassionate forms of nervous system care available to us.

Presence as Practice

This episode reminds us that healing does not require perfection.

It requires presence.

Not fixing.
Not forcing.
Not rushing.

Just presence.

To breathe with what is here.
To listen to what is asking to move.
To allow grief to soften into motion.
To let the body return to itself.

Healing begins when we become available to now.

Have you given yourself the space to pause, regroup, relax, and let go of your diagnosis or situation? The Illness Brain is something that can hold you in a pattern that continues to feed the situation. Join Laurin Wittig and Michelle Greenwell as they explore the power of vacation in this "Facing Dementia" podcast episode.

In Episode 6 of Facing Dementia, Dr. Michelle Greenwell and Laurin Wittig explore a powerful and often overlooked aspect of healing: the need to step away from the constant mental focus on illness.

When we receive a diagnosis—or even anticipate one—the mind shifts. It becomes vigilant, analytical, and hyper-focused on doing everything “right.” We research, plan, track symptoms, and commit to protocols with diligence and care. While these actions come from a place of hope and responsibility, they can also create an unintended consequence: the rise of what we call the “Illness Brain.”

What Is the Illness Brain?

The Illness Brain is a pattern of thinking shaped by stress, fear, and the desire to regain control. It is characterized by:

Constant mental scanning for symptoms

Overanalyzing choices and outcomes

Feeling responsible for getting everything “perfect”

Difficulty relaxing or being present

A subtle (or not so subtle) identification with the diagnosis

From a scientific perspective, this makes sense. Chronic stress activates the brain’s threat detection systems—particularly the amygdala—and increases cortisol levels. Over time, this state reduces cognitive flexibility, narrows perspective, and keeps the nervous system in a loop of vigilance.

Ironically, the very effort to heal can keep the body in a state of stress, which is not conducive to healing at all.

Audio Version

When Doing Everything Right Becomes Too Much

One of the key insights from this episode is that in trying to do everything right, we can lose sight of something essential: healing requires calm.

When the mind is busy, the body cannot fully rest.
When the nervous system is activated, the body cannot fully repair.

Healing is not only about what we do—it is about the state we are in while doing it.

Laurin’s recent vacation offered a powerful contrast. Removed from daily routines, expectations, and constant mental processing, something shifted. The Illness Brain softened. The need to monitor and manage faded. In its place came presence, connection, and ease.

The Science of Stepping Away

Research on vacations and restorative breaks supports this experience. Time away from daily stressors has been shown to:

Lower cortisol levels

Improve heart rate variability (a marker of resilience)

Enhance mood and emotional regulation

Improve sleep quality

Increase cognitive flexibility and creativity

Nature immersion adds another layer of benefit. Being in natural environments reduces rumination—the repetitive thought patterns often associated with stress and anxiety—and supports parasympathetic (rest-and-repair) activation.

In simple terms:
When we step away, the brain recalibrates.

The Catch-22 of Healing

Another important theme explored in this episode is the idea that the same mindset that contributed to imbalance can also influence how we try to heal.

If patterns of overthinking, stress, perfectionism, or disconnection played a role in the development of illness, those same patterns may show up in the healing journey.

This creates a kind of catch-22:

We want to make the “right” choices

But the mind making those choices is still operating from old patterns

Sometimes this shows up as resistance. We may feel that something “doesn’t resonate” or “isn’t right,” and choose not to engage. But what if that resistance is not wisdom—but familiarity?

The Illness Brain often prefers the known, even if the known contributed to imbalance.

This is where healing asks something different of us.

Creating Space for Change

Rather than forcing ourselves into new practices or overwhelming change, the invitation is to begin with something simpler:

Create space.

Space in the mind.
Space in the body.
Space in the nervous system.

When we calm the internal environment, we become more open. New ideas feel less threatening. Experiences that once felt difficult or unfamiliar become approachable.

This is where true transformation begins—not through force, but through readiness.

Returning to Yourself

At its core, this episode is not just about taking a vacation. It is about remembering who you are beyond the diagnosis.

You are not only a patient, a caregiver, or a person navigating uncertainty.
You are still someone who can laugh, connect, explore, and feel joy.

The Illness Brain narrows identity.
Presence expands it.

A Gentle Practice to Take Forward

As you return to your daily life, consider this:

Pause for a moment.
Take a breath.
Recall a time when you felt calm, connected, and fully yourself.

Let that feeling settle into your body.

This is not escape.
This is access.

Access to a state where healing becomes possible—not through effort alone, but through ease, awareness, and being.

You are not your diagnosis.
You are a whole person, capable of healing, growth, and living fully—one breath, one moment, one choice at a time.

The post Illness Brain on Vacation: Reclaiming Calm, Clarity, and the Capacity to Heal first appeared on Greenwell Center for Holistic Health.

Inspired by Episode 3 of the Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell podcast with Ann-Marie Boudreau

What if the way we understand the world could extend beyond our five familiar senses?
What if sound had colour, emotions carried texture, and memories lived not only in the mind—but in the body?

In Episode 3 of The Power of Sound trilogy, Life in Color: The Synesthetic Experience Throughout Life, we explore synesthesia not as a rare neurological curiosity, but as a natural, human capacity for multi-sensory awareness—one that supports healing, creativity, intuition, and meaningful life transitions.

Audio Version

Synesthesia as an Expanded Way of Knowing

Synesthesia is often described as a blending of senses—sound perceived as colour, taste evoking emotion, or touch triggering memory. Yet when viewed through a wellness and healing lens, synesthesia becomes something more profound:
a bridge between the analytical mind and body-based intelligence.

This expanded sensory awareness allows us to:

Perceive subtle emotional and energetic cues

Access insight beyond logic and language

Listen with the heart, not just the ears

Develop intuition as a lived, embodied experience

Rather than relying solely on external data, synesthetic awareness invites us to trust internal signals—sensations, impressions, and felt responses that guide us toward deeper understanding.

Quieting the Analytical Mind

Modern life often prioritizes analysis, speed, and productivity, leaving little room for subtle perception. Synesthetic practices—through sound, movement, colour, and ritual—help quiet the mental chatter and reconnect us with a slower, wiser rhythm.

Sound, in particular, acts as a gateway. When we listen deeply, vibrations move through the body, stirring memory, emotion, and awareness without needing explanation. This creates space for insight to emerge organically, often felt before it is understood.

In this way, synesthesia supports:

Emotional regulation and nervous system balance

Greater creativity and problem-solving

A renewed sense of curiosity and wonder

Deeper trust in intuitive decision-making

Tea, Colour, and Sensory Ritual

As with every episode of Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell, Episode 3 begins with an intentional tea ritual, highlighting Kitchen Party from the Natalie MacMaster Tea Set.

This vibrant purple tea becomes a sensory experience in itself—colour, warmth, aroma, and taste weaving together to anchor awareness in the present moment.

Blue cornflower petals invite clarity, inner vision, and expansive perception.

Hawthorn fruit supports the heart—physically and emotionally—encouraging openness, joy, and connection.

Through ritual, synesthetic awareness becomes accessible to everyone. It reminds us that healing doesn’t require effort—it requires presence.

A Sixth Sense for Modern Living

Developing synesthetic awareness is not about escaping reality; it’s about inhabiting life more fully. As we age, face transitions, or navigate uncertainty, this sixth sense becomes an invaluable ally.

It helps us:

Sense when something is aligned—or not

Recognize emotional truths beneath words

Navigate change with resilience and grace

Experience life as layered, meaningful, and interconnected

This multi-dimensional approach to living honours the intelligence of the body and the wisdom carried in sensation.

These retreats offer immersive experiences in:

Sound and frequency-based practices

Voice exploration and embodied listening

Multi-sensory rituals using tea, movement, and colour

Developing intuitive awareness in a supportive community

Set against the natural beauty of Cape Breton, these gatherings create space to step out of the analytical mind and into lived experience—where healing unfolds through connection, creativity, and presence.

Living Life in Full Colour

Synesthesia reminds us that life is not meant to be experienced in fragments. Sound, colour, emotion, memory, and movement are not separate—they are threads of the same tapestry.

As we close The Power of Sound trilogy, we are invited to listen differently, feel more deeply, and trust what emerges when we engage the world with all of our senses.

Life, after all, is richer when we allow ourselves to experience it in full colour.

When emotions like fear, anger, and uncertainty aren’t acknowledged, they don’t disappear — they become stored in the body. In this episode of Facing Dementia, we explore how bioenergetic wellness techniques calm the nervous system, harmonize the body’s systems, and allow emotions to be experienced in the present rather than trapped in the past. Naming the hard emotions becomes an act of empowerment, opening the door to clarity, peace, and healing.

In the fifth episode of Facing Dementia, Dr. Michelle Greenwell and Laurin Wittig open a conversation many people quietly avoid: the emotional reality that comes with illness and the anticipation of change. A diagnosis — or even the possibility of one — does not arrive in isolation. It brings fear, anger, grief, uncertainty, and a deep questioning of the future.

These emotions are not weaknesses. They are natural responses to disruption. Yet when emotions are not acknowledged or supported, they can become trapped in the body, settling into tissues, organs, and energy systems where they quietly influence health, mood, and resilience over time.

This episode invites a different approach — one grounded in bioenergetic wellness, where emotions are not suppressed or analyzed away, but gently experienced, balanced, and released.

Audio Here

Why Emotions Get Stuck

From both a physiological and energetic perspective, emotions are meant to move. When we feel fear, anger, or grief, the nervous system activates, the body responds, and ideally, the emotion completes its cycle and resolves.

However, with illness — especially conditions that carry stigma or uncertainty like dementia — emotions are often held back. People are told to “stay positive,” “not dwell on it,” or “wait and see.” Over time, this creates internal tension. The emotion does not disappear; it simply relocates, often embedding itself in muscles, fascia, organs, and energy pathways.

Bioenergetic wellness recognizes that unprocessed emotion creates disharmony across systems — physical, neurological, emotional, and energetic.

Calming the System Through Active Energy Balance

One of the core themes of this episode is that emotional healing does not require reliving trauma or forcing catharsis. Instead, it begins by calming the system.

Through gentle bioenergetic techniques — such as balancing the Switches for orientation in space, connection of the nervous system to the electrical system, and harmonizing directions in the body — the body receives signals of safety. When the nervous system shifts out of fight-or-flight, emotions no longer feel overwhelming or threatening.

This is the moment where change becomes possible.

Rubbing the Gait points on the foot, from the Feet First System Set 1, the body is able to open blocked areas in the body and in coordinating across dimensions as well as the brain-body connection. Rather than being trapped in the past or stored in tissue memory, emotions can be experienced in the present, acknowledged for what they are, and allowed to move through the system, as we step forward with an ease and grace in our step.

Naming Emotions as an Act of Empowerment

In this episode, Laurin shares wisdom passed down from her aunt many years ago — a simple insight that became a lifelong mantra. This teaching reminds us that when we name what we are feeling, we reclaim agency. Emotions no longer control us from the shadows; they become information.

Naming anger, fear, or uncertainty does not intensify them. It brings clarity. It allows the body and energy systems to reorganize around truth rather than tension.

This is one of the most powerful aspects of bioenergetic work: emotions are not judged or categorized as “good” or “bad.” They are welcomed as messengers, then gently integrated.

Tea as Emotional Ally: Releasing the Warrior

The featured tea for this episode, Releasing the Warrior, supports this process beautifully. With anise and cardamom, the blend offers warmth, softness, and grounding. Spiritually, these herbs invite the nervous system to release hypervigilance — the constant readiness to fight, brace, or defend.

The “warrior” here is not about strength through armor, but strength through presence. Through ritual — sipping tea, breathing, pausing — the body is reminded that it is safe to soften.

From Trapped Emotion to Lived Experience

When bioenergetic wellness techniques harmonize the systems, emotions are no longer stored as unresolved tension. They become lived experiences — felt, understood, and released.

This is especially important for those navigating illness or caregiving. Emotional harmony supports clearer thinking, better sleep, improved digestion, and a greater sense of peace — all of which directly influence overall health and quality of life.

Ways to Continue the Journey

If this episode resonates with you, there are many ways to explore emotional release and energetic harmony with Dr. Michelle Greenwell:

Awakening Inner Resonance – Sound Retreat with Ann-Marie Boudreau
A restorative experience using sound, vibration, movement, and frequency to calm the nervous system and release emotional buildup.

Each offering provides a different doorway into healing — because there is no single path. There are many ways to gently release trapped emotion, restore balance, and move forward with clarity and compassion.

Naming the hard emotions is not the end of the journey.
It is the beginning of living more fully, honestly, and in harmony with yourself.

The post Naming the Hard Emotions: How BioEnergetic Wellness Helps Us Move Forward first appeared on Greenwell Center for Holistic Health.

In Episode 2 of The Power of Sound Trilogy on Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell, the conversation deepens with a question that gently challenges many of our assumptions about healing:

Who is the healer?

In a world where solutions are often sought outside ourselves, this episode invites a return inward—toward the voice as a source of regulation, expression, and empowerment. Joined once again by Ann-Marie Boudreau, sound doula, intuitive vocalist, and classical pianist, this episode explores how voice becomes medicine when we allow it to emerge authentically.

Audio Version

The Voice as a Healing Instrument

The human voice is our first instrument. Long before language forms, sound communicates safety, emotion, and connection. In adulthood, however, many people disconnect from their voice—judging it, silencing it, or using it only functionally.

Episode 2 invites listeners to reconsider voice not as performance, but as presence.

Through humming, toning, breath-led sound, or intuitive vocalization, the voice can:

Regulate the nervous system

Release stored emotional tension

Support clarity and self-awareness

Restore a sense of agency in one’s healing journey

When sound arises from within, healing is no longer something done to us—it becomes something we actively participate in.

Introducing Ann-Marie Boudreau

Ann-Marie Boudreau brings decades of lived experience to this conversation. A classical concert pianist trained in both Western traditions and East Indian music in Chennai, India, Ann-Marie is also a multi-instrumentalist, intuitive vocalist, Reiki Master, Sound Doula, and composer.

Her work spans hospitals, hospices, retreat centres, and community spaces, where she supports individuals through sound journeys, bedside music, and vocal exploration. Ann-Marie’s approach is grounded, compassionate, and deeply respectful of each person’s unique voice.

Her guiding reminder is simple yet profound: sound is not something we perform—it is something we become.

Opening with Intention: The Autograph Tea Ritual

As with every episode of the podcast, Episode 2 begins with a tea ritual to support arrival and reflection. The featured blend is The Autograph from the Natalie MacMaster Tea Set, accompanied by the affirmation:

“Each of us has unique gifts for others to treasure. Create your special signature for others to be inspired.”

This herbal blend highlights the spiritual essence of pumpkin and lemon. Pumpkin offers nourishment, grounding, and gentle support—reminding us that healing unfolds when we feel held and sustained. Lemon brings brightness, clarity, and renewal, inviting expression and courage.

Together, they mirror the theme of this episode: honouring individuality while trusting the clarity of one’s authentic voice.

Voice, Mental Health, and Empowerment

This episode resonates strongly during Mental Health Month, offering accessible tools for self-regulation and emotional wellbeing. Voice-based practices help calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and create a sense of inner steadiness.

Rather than asking people to “fix” themselves, sound invites curiosity, compassion, and self-listening. When individuals feel empowered to participate in their healing, communities grow more resilient—a key principle in creating Blue Zone cultures rooted in connection, purpose, and shared practices.

Experience the Work In Person: Upcoming Retreats

For those inspired to explore the power of voice more deeply, listeners are invited to join in-person retreats with Dr. Michelle Greenwell and Ann-Marie Boudreau:

February Retreat – Awakening Inner Resonance: Exploring body transformation through sound and voice

These retreats offer a supportive space to experience voice as a healing ally—without performance pressure, judgment, or expectation. Participants are guided gently into listening, sounding, and reconnecting with their natural expressive capacity.

An Invitation to Remember

Episode 2 of The Power of Sound is a reminder that healing is not something reserved for experts or special moments. It lives in breath, vibration, and the courage to express what is already within us.

Your voice carries wisdom. Your sound has meaning. And healing begins when you allow yourself to listen.

In Episode 1 of Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell, we open a powerful new trilogy: The Power of Sound, by returning to one of the most intimate and accessible tools for self‑care and healing – the human voice. Long before words were written, voice was used to soothe, signal safety, express emotion, and restore balance. In today’s fast‑paced world, reclaiming the voice as a healing ally is both timely and essential.

This opening episode invites listeners to explore how sound affects us viscerally and energetically, and why engaging with our own voice—through toning, humming, singing, or intentional breath—can support nervous system regulation, emotional processing, and overall wellbeing. Sound does not need to be perfected to be powerful. It only needs to be authentic.

Introducing Ann‑Marie Boudreau

Joining Dr. Greenwell for this trilogy is Ann‑Marie Boudreau, a classical concert pianist, multi‑instrumentalist, intuitive vocalist, Sound Doula, Reiki Master, and composer whose life’s work bridges music, healing, and spiritual care.

Trained in Western classical piano and East Indian music traditions in Chennai, India, Ann‑Marie brings decades of experience working in hospitals, hospices, retreat centres, and community spaces. Her sound journeys and vocal explorations support emotional release, deep listening, and reconnection to one’s authentic voice. Ann‑Marie’s work reminds us that sound is not something we perform—it is something we become.

Her presence in this conversation grounds Episode 1 in lived experience: voice as companion, voice as medicine, and voice as a pathway to wholeness. You can learn more about Ann-Marie and her programs from her YouTube channel.

Why the Voice Matters in Self‑Care

Modern wellness conversations often focus on movement, nutrition, and mindfulness, yet the voice is frequently overlooked. Research into cymatics—the study of how sound creates visible patterns—shows us that vibration organizes matter. When we vocalize, we are literally shaping our internal landscape.

Simple practices such as humming, chanting, or toning can:

Calm the vagus nerve

Support emotional regulation

Improve breath awareness

Create a sense of connection and belonging

In Episode 1, listeners are invited to reflect on who the healer truly is. Rather than placing healing solely outside ourselves, voice-based practices empower individuals to participate actively in their own wellbeing—an essential principle of sustainable self‑care.

Sound, Longevity, and Blue Zone Living

This conversation also naturally connects to Blue Zone initiatives, which emphasize longevity through community connection, purpose, movement, and stress reduction. Across cultures where people live longer, healthier lives, music and shared sound are integral—singing together, storytelling, ritual, and celebration.

Healing through sound supports Blue Zone values by fostering:

Social connection

Emotional expression

Intergenerational engagement

Stress resilience

Voice is communal by nature. When we sing or sound together, we strengthen the social fabric that sustains long‑term health.

Integrated Programs Supporting Sound & Movement

The themes explored in Episode 1 are echoed across several integrative programs and communities:

Tai Chi Cape Breton and the Wine Country Tai Chi Society, where mindful movement, breath, and internal listening cultivate balance, longevity, and nervous system health.

Qi YINtegration, a long‑standing weekly program that weaves intention, energetic alignment, and group coherence into self‑care practices.

Symphony of Radiance, where sound, frequency, and embodied awareness meet to support deep restoration and inner harmony.

Together, these programs reflect a growing understanding that healing is most effective when movement, sound, and community are woven together.

Upcoming Retreat Experiences

Listeners inspired to explore sound more deeply are invited to join a series of immersive retreats with Ann‑Marie Boudreau and Dr. Greenwell:

February Retreat: Exploring body transformation through sound and voice

March Retreat: Enhancing healing through frequency, resonance, and embodied listening

August Summer Retreat: A spacious, integrative experience weaving sound, movement, community, and nature – To be announced soon!

Each retreat offers a safe and supportive environment to experience the voice not as performance, but as presence.

A Tea Ritual to Open the Conversation: Fit as a Fiddle

Each episode of Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell begins with a tea ritual, creating a moment to arrive, listen, and prepare the body and senses for deeper awareness. For Episode 1, the featured tea is Fit as a Fiddle from the Natalie MacMaster Tea Set—an elegant orange pekoe surrounded by herbs and flower petals.

Spiritually, this tea speaks to alignment, vitality, and harmony. Orange pekoe, with its balanced and steady nature, offers grounding and clarity, while the surrounding botanicals invite lightness, circulation, and gentle awakening. Together, they mirror the intention of this first episode: to tune the body like an instrument and restore resonance from within.

As the tea steeps, listeners are invited to engage sound as part of the ritual:

Notice the subtle sounds of water pouring and leaves unfurling

Hum softly or tone one sustained note, allowing vibration to travel through the chest and throat

Take the first sip slowly, sensing how warmth and sound together create coherence

This ritual reminds us that sound and nourishment work synergistically. Just as music can tune an instrument, intentional sound can help tune the nervous system, preparing us to listen more deeply—to ourselves and to others.

Fit as a Fiddle becomes more than a beverage; it becomes a practice of embodied listening, setting the stage for exploring the healing power of voice.

An Invitation

Episode 1 of The Power of Sound is an invitation to soften, listen, and remember that your voice is already enough. Whether spoken, sung, or gently hummed, sound offers a bridge between inner awareness and outer connection.

As we continue this trilogy, may you feel inspired to explore your own voice as a daily act of self‑care—and as a contribution to collective wellbeing.

Listen, feel, and let your sound lead you home.

The post The Power of Voice: Bringing Sound Into the Healing Conversation first appeared on Greenwell Center for Holistic Health.

What if creativity is not just an expression of imagination, but a biological necessity for brain health? In this episode of Facing Dementia, we explore the science behind creativity and why the brain cannot function optimally without movement, sensory input, and energetic flow. From the role of the hips and shoulders in supporting cognitive clarity, to the power of music, colour, and frequency in accessing memory and emotion, this conversation reframes creativity as a vital tool for healthy aging. Through mindful rituals, movement, and sensory engagement, creativity becomes a pathway to resilience, presence, and empowered living — even in the face of cognitive change.

In the fourth episode of Facing Dementia, Dr. Michelle Greenwell and Laurin Wittig turn their attention to a powerful yet often misunderstood ally in cognitive wellbeing: creativity. While most research on dementia and brain health focuses on cognition alone, this conversation widens the lens, exploring how creativity emerges from the body, the senses, and the energetic systems that support neural function.

What the Science Says About Creativity and the Brain

Scientific studies consistently show that creative engagement supports neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form new connections, adapt to change, and recover from stress. Activities such as art-making, writing, problem-solving, and imaginative play stimulate multiple regions of the brain simultaneously, strengthening communication between hemispheres and neural networks.

Creativity has also been linked to improved executive function, emotional regulation, and cognitive flexibility—all essential factors in healthy aging. For individuals navigating memory challenges or early cognitive changes, creative practices may slow functional decline by encouraging the brain to find alternative pathways for expression and understanding.

However, much of this research still frames creativity as a mental activity. What is often missing is the foundational role of the body.

Audio Version

Why Movement Is Essential for Brain Function

From a movement science and bioenergetic wellness perspective, the brain cannot operate at full capacity without accurate information about the body’s position in space—a process known as proprioception. This information is largely transmitted through movement of the shoulder seams and hip seams.

The shoulders inform the brain about reaching, interacting, and relating to the world.

The hips anchor balance, grounding, and forward momentum.

When these joints are restricted, the brain receives incomplete data, increasing neurological stress and reducing cognitive efficiency. Conversely, fluid movement of the hips and shoulders enhances sensory feedback, stabilizes the nervous system, and supports creative thinking.

The hips, in particular, are vital energy centers. In many movement traditions, they are understood as reservoirs of vital energy, supporting stamina, adaptability, and clarity—qualities deeply intertwined with creativity and resilience. In Tai Chi we refer to this as the Lower Dan Tien, where the ‘Golden Pill’ or vital energy for the body is built and stored for use later.

Music, Memory, and the Power of Frequency

Much attention has been given to studies showing how music reaches parts of the brain associated with emotion and memory, even when cognitive recognition is impaired. This is especially relevant in dementia care, where familiar songs can evoke vivid emotional responses long after names or facts fade.

Beyond melody, there is growing interest in the role of frequency and vibration. Sound waves influence brainwave states, nervous system regulation, and emotional balance. Similarly, colour frequency—how the brain and body respond to light wavelengths—can affect mood, focus, and energy levels.

Creativity thrives when these sensory frequencies are harmonized. Sound, colour, and movement work together to create an environment where the brain feels safe, stimulated, and supported.

The Five Senses and Embodied Creativity

One of the most accessible tools for supporting creativity and mental health is conscious sensory engagement. When we fully engage our five senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell—we anchor ourselves in the present moment. This reduces anxiety, calms the nervous system, and strengthens memory formation.

Sensory-rich experiences create what are often called embodied memories—memories that are stored not just cognitively, but emotionally and physically. These memories remain accessible even when cognitive recall becomes challenging, offering comfort, orientation, and a sense of identity.

Tea as a Daily Creative Ritual

In this episode, the tea Take the Shore Road becomes both metaphor and nutrition. Featuring blue pea flower, hibiscus, and green tea, this blend supports brain health through circulation, antioxidant protection, and gentle cognitive stimulation.

The affirmation associated with the tea—“Be present and mindful of all that you see when you slow down and check out the view”—reinforces the role of mindfulness and sensory awareness in creative living. Tea rituals invite pause, reflection, and engagement with the senses, creating space for creativity to unfold naturally.

Creativity as a Path Forward

For Laurin, creativity is no longer simply an artistic outlet—it is a strategic and soulful component of her wellbeing following a precursor to dementia diagnosis. Writing, mentoring, movement, and sensory rituals have become ways of supporting brain health while cultivating meaning and joy.

This episode of Facing Dementia reminds us that creativity is not optional. It is an essential biological process—one that connects brain, body, energy, and experience. By moving, sensing, listening, and creating, we give the brain what it needs to adapt, heal, and thrive.

Creativity, it turns out, may be one of our most powerful tools for aging with intention, resilience, and hope.

Special Movements for Hips and Shoulders

Finding Peace and Presence in Nature - In this month’s Facing Dementia conversation, Laurin Wittig and Dr. Michelle Greenwell invite listeners to rediscover the healing power of nature. As Laurin continues her journey of empowerment following a dementia precursor diagnosis, she shares how stepping into nature — rather than simply observing it — creates profound peace and clarity.

Together, they explore how our five senses can anchor us in the present moment, how colour and the Five Element Wheel guide emotional balance, and how tea, specifically the TEAlightful blend with fireweed, vanilla, hibiscus, becomes a ritual of connection between body, mind, and spirit.

This episode is a gentle reminder that healing is not about fixing what’s broken — it’s about remembering our wholeness, in rhythm with the world around us.

In this third episode of Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell, Laurin Wittig returns to explore how deep presence in nature can transform our mental health, reframe the experience of dementia, and restore peace to the body, mind, and spirit.

After her time away immersed in the stillness of forests and lakes, Laurin reflects on the difference between looking at nature and walking within it. This shift — from observer to participant — changes everything. It allows us to become part of nature’s flow, to synchronize our breath with the rhythm of the earth, and to dissolve the illusion of separation that often defines modern life.

“When we step into nature with all five senses open,” Laurin shares, “we create sensual memories that reconnect us to peace, resilience, and joy.”

The Healing Language of Nature

Dementia often evokes fear — fear of loss, confusion, or decline. But Laurin invites us to see memory and mind through a different lens: as part of a living system that responds to love, rhythm, and connection. In nature, there is no judgment about forgetting or slowing down — only the unfolding of cycles, seasons, and transitions.

When we open our senses fully — feeling the texture of a leaf, hearing the heartbeat of the wind, tasting the freshness of the air — the nervous system begins to regulate. This presence brings us into coherence, reducing stress and aligning our energy with the Earth’s steady heartbeat.

In bioenergetic wellness, we understand this as resonance — when our frequency harmonizes with natural rhythms, and the energy pathways of the body open to healing.

The Role of the Five Elements

Laurin and Michelle use the Five Element Wheel — a cornerstone in energy medicine — as a guide for self-discovery and harmony. Each element carries both a challenge and a gift, a Ko and a Shen cycle that reflect the balance of creation and control.

Wood (growth, clarity, direction)

Fire (passion, joy, connection)

Earth (nourishment, balance, trust)

Metal (letting go, integrity, clarity)

Water (wisdom, flow, rest)

By observing nature through colour, movement, and texture, we can attune to the cycles at play within us. For example, the brilliant reds of autumn ignite the Fire element, inviting joy and release, while the grounding browns and golds of fallen leaves reconnect us to Earth’s steady rhythm.

TEAlightful: A Ritual of Connection

To deepen this sensory experience, the episode features a tea ritual with TEAlightful — a blend that celebrates warmth, vitality, and heart-centered joy.

Fireweed brings resilience, reminding us of nature’s ability to renew even after fire or hardship.

Vanilla soothes the heart and nurtures self-compassion, helping us release self-judgment and fear.

Hibiscus connects us to the essence of love and flow, supporting healthy circulation and emotional openness.

Cinnamon and Clove awaken the Fire element — stimulating energy, promoting mental clarity, and igniting creative spark.

Together, these botanicals create a sensory bridge between body and spirit, inviting listeners to savour their tea as a meditation.

Tools for Transformation

Two simple bioenergetic wellness tools were shared to enhance awareness and healing:

Using the Five Senses in Nature — Take five minutes daily to truly be in nature. Focus on what you can see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. This sensory immersion reawakens the parasympathetic nervous system, easing anxiety and restoring calm.

Exploring the Five Element Wheel with Colour — As you look around, notice the dominant colours and their energetic resonance. What element do they speak to? How might that energy support balance within you today?

These tools cultivate mindfulness and embodiment, both essential in maintaining emotional stability and cognitive health.

Redefining Dementia and Mental Wellness

Laurin’s reflections remind us that dementia does not define a person; it is an invitation to live differently — more slowly, more intentionally, more connected. Through the lens of energy medicine, we can see that our cells, memories, and experiences are fields of light and vibration that respond to how we think, feel, and interact with our environment.

When we choose to live in rhythm with nature — rather than resisting change — we begin to dissolve generational patterns of fear, illness, and disconnection.

An Invitation to Presence

As the episode closes, Michelle and Laurin invite listeners to brew a cup of TEAlightful, step outside, and take in the world through all five senses. Notice the way sunlight moves through leaves. Listen to the song of the wind. Feel the warmth of your cup as an anchor to the present moment.

In this union with nature, healing begins — quietly, deeply, and beautifully.

Moving More in Nature

When we receive a diagnosis, our first instinct is often fear — fear of loss, fear of limitation, fear of the unknown. But what if that moment could become a portal, an invitation to understand ourselves and our lineage more deeply? In Episode 2 of Facing Dementia, Laurin Wittig and Dr. Michelle Greenwell continue their profound conversation about living consciously with the precursors to dementia — and this time, they step through time itself to explore ancestral healing, shamanic journeys, and the energetic threads that weave our past into our present.

Retracing History Through the Shamanic Lens

Laurin’s shamanic exploration began as a way to connect more deeply with her inner wisdom. Through meditation, visualization, and guided journeys, she found herself travelling through her ancestral DNA — revisiting moments and generations long before her birth. These experiences are sometimes called Time Line Therapy or ancestral regression, but at their heart, they are about listening to the stories imprinted in our energetic field.

In shamanic practice, it is believed that time is not linear but fluid — the past, present, and future coexist in a continuous spiral of energy. When trauma or emotional pain occurs, that energy can become stuck in the field, carried silently through generations. Laurin’s journey has been one of recognition and release, of understanding how patterns of silence, fear, and illness can ripple through family lines until someone — a “pattern changer” — steps forward to transform them.

“I began to see how the choices and struggles of my ancestors may have shaped not only my health but my beliefs and habits,” Laurin shares. “By travelling back through my DNA, I could witness those experiences and bring light where there had been shadow.”

The Science of Time and Memory

Interestingly, science is beginning to echo what spiritual and energy medicine traditions have long known. The emerging field of epigenetics explores how emotional and environmental experiences can alter gene expression — not by changing the DNA sequence itself, but by turning certain genes “on” or “off.” This means that the trauma or resilience of one generation can literally affect the biology of the next.

Dementia research has shown that stress, inflammation, and emotional suppression can increase vulnerability in the brain’s neural pathways. But equally, neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to reorganize and heal — offers hope. Our thoughts, emotions, and habits can reshape our neural networks and influence how our genes express. In other words, healing our stories can change our biology.

When Laurin explores her ancestral patterns, she’s not just engaging in imagination or metaphor — she’s potentially altering the very energetic imprint that informs her body’s functioning today.

Peace Through Pattern Change

As Laurin travels through these ancestral timelines, she encounters both sorrow and peace. There are moments of grief for what her ancestors endured — famine, displacement, fear, and loss. Yet, through acknowledgment and compassion, she begins to transmute that energy into understanding and forgiveness. This process creates energetic peace — not only for herself but for those who came before her and those who will follow.

When we release the emotional charge that has been locked in our lineage, the tension held within the body, mind, and spirit begins to ease. The body relaxes its defensive patterns. The heart opens to new rhythms of connection. The spirit finds its natural alignment. These subtle shifts create profound change in our well-being — improving clarity, emotional balance, and even cellular communication.

This kind of peace doesn’t come from forgetting or denying what has been. It comes from fully seeing, feeling, and then transforming it. Through this work, Laurin steps into her role as a pattern changer — someone who consciously alters the trajectory of inherited energies.

BioEnergetic Wellness and Living Forward

At the Greenwell Center, we often speak about how BioEnergetic Wellness tools can help the body integrate change at a cellular and energetic level. When fear, grief, or overwhelm are present — as they often are with a dementia diagnosis — the body’s energy field constricts. Circulation decreases, the nervous system becomes overactive, and healing slows down. BioEnergetic tools such as the Injury Recall Technique, chakra balancing, and assemblage point alignment help to reset the flow of energy, inviting coherence back into the system.

In Laurin’s journey, this included balancing her assemblage point — the energetic center that influences how we perceive and engage with life. When out of alignment, a person may feel disconnected, foggy, or emotionally unstable — symptoms that can mirror early dementia experiences. Restoring the assemblage point to its natural alignment can bring back clarity, vitality, and peace.

Through these sessions, Laurin has begun to release not only the emotional impact of her diagnosis but also the tension of generations held within her DNA. “It’s like stepping into a brighter version of myself,” she explains. “I feel more connected, more grounded, and more open to what’s ahead.”

The Role of Ritual and Tea in Healing

Each Facing Dementia episode features a tea ritual to anchor the conversation in presence and nourishment. For this episode, the featured blend is Releasing the Warrior from the Cape Breton Tea Company. Infused with the spiritual essences of Juniper Berry and Black Pepper, and linked to the Wood Element, this tea embodies courage, renewal, and growth.

As you sip this tea, you are invited into ritual — to take a deep breath, feel the warmth of the cup, and connect with your own inner warrior. Juniper clears away energetic stagnation, while Black Pepper ignites vitality and willpower. Together, they remind us that transformation begins from within.

Affirmation: “I release the past and step into my inspired future with strength and grace.”

This simple act of mindful drinking becomes a metaphor for Laurin’s journey — a conscious moment of choosing nourishment, expression, and alignment over fear and resistance.

Transforming Fear into Empowerment

Facing Dementia isn’t just a podcast series — it’s a movement toward compassionate awareness. By sharing Laurin’s story, Dr. Greenwell invites listeners to look beyond the diagnosis and into the energetic story it tells.

Dementia, like many chronic conditions, challenges us to rethink how we care for our body and mind. It asks us to slow down, listen deeply, and engage with practices that bring coherence — not chaos — to our energy field.

When we choose awareness over avoidance, self-care over self-doubt, we begin to change not just our personal story but the entire field of energy that supports life around us.

A New Paradigm of Healing

Through Laurin’s courage and the conversation she shares with Michelle, we are witnessing the emergence of a new paradigm — one where science and spirit meet, where ancestral memory and bioenergetic wisdom work hand in hand to guide us home to wholeness.

As we face dementia together — with curiosity, compassion, and courage — we begin to remember that healing is not about going back to who we were, but about becoming more of who we truly are.

One way to begin this journey of discovery is through a movement class to discover the ways in which the body might be restricted, weak, or unbalanced. The online Movement and Music class is an easy way to engage with the power of the programs at the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health, or you can choose an in-person class. Tai Chi Cape Breton has the schedule on the calendar, while Wine Country Tai Chi Society can offer you classes in West Kelowna and Peachland, BC. These initial first steps to realize where tension is in the body can be transforming and life saving. Reach out to find your perfect class or a one-on-one session that reveals your priority challenges looking for support, whether that is in body, mind, or spirit.

Health is more than the absence of symptoms. It is a dynamic state of flow, coherence, and harmony within the body, mind, and spirit. In Episode 2 of The Resonant Body podcast trilogy, Dr. Michelle Greenwell and Dr. Christina Ross explore how quantum change can transform our understanding of health, moving us from a limited biochemical model to a more expansive biophysical one.

This episode examines how energy medicine, subtle energy systems, and the ultrasonic core can unlock new pathways to healing and self-awareness.

Moving Beyond the Visible: The Biofield and Quantum Healing

Modern medicine often focuses on the body as a machine—treating broken parts with pharmaceuticals or surgery. Yet, research in biophysics and quantum biology suggests the body is more accurately seen as an energy field in motion.

The biofield—the subtle electromagnetic field that surrounds and permeates the body—acts as both blueprint and communication network for health. It interacts with cellular systems, guiding processes like repair, immune function, and stress regulation. When the biofield is disrupted, the body can fall out of balance, leading to symptoms that manifest physically or emotionally.

Energy medicine works directly with this field. By engaging with the chakras (energy centers), the hara line (the vertical axis of balance and intention), and the ultrasonic core (a deep vibrational resonance within), practitioners can help restore coherence. The result is not just symptom relief, but an opportunity for profound quantum-level change.

What Is Quantum Change?

Quantum change is a sudden, transformative shift in how energy flows through the body. It is more than incremental healing—it is a reorganization at the deepest levels of resonance. Much like a quantum particle that can shift states in an instant, our own energy fields can reorganize rapidly when the right conditions are present.

Practices such as hands-on polarity therapy, mindful intention, meditation, and vibrational sound healing can stimulate these shifts. At the cellular level, this may mean improved communication and synchronization between molecules and membranes. At the emotional or spiritual level, it may mean feeling more grounded, inspired, or at peace.

The Ultrasonic Core: A Center of Flow

Dr. Ross introduces the idea of the ultrasonic core, a vibrational center that acts as a stabilizing axis for the whole body. When this deep resonance is aligned, energy flows freely through the biofield and into tissues, supporting balance, healing, and vitality.

By working with the ultrasonic core, individuals can move beyond stress-driven survival patterns and tap into restorative, regenerative states of being. This is where energy medicine shines—not only addressing illness, but promoting resilience and wellness before disease even manifests.

Tea Ritual: Island VitaliTEA

Each episode of this trilogy is paired with a tea from the Cape Breton Tea Company, chosen for its spiritual and energetic essence. For this episode, the featured tea is Island VitaliTEA, a refreshing blend that reminds us of the restorative power of nature.

Rosehip: The Heart of Renewal

Rosehip is packed with Vitamin C and antioxidants, supporting immune function and reducing inflammation. Spiritually, rosehip is tied to the heart energy, encouraging openness, compassion, and renewal. It reminds us to stay connected to love as a guiding force in our healing journey.

Cranberry: Flow and Cleansing

Cranberry is known for supporting urinary and kidney health, but energetically it speaks to cleansing and flow. It encourages us to release what no longer serves us, allowing energy to move freely through the body and spirit.

Together, rosehip and cranberry create a tea that is both uplifting and grounding, a perfect complement to conversations about balance, resonance, and flow in the biofield.

Why This Matters for Self-Care

Quantum change reminds us that healing is not always a linear process. By working with subtle energy systems, we can invite profound shifts into our lives—shifts that bring ease, vitality, and peace.

Simple self-care practices like:

Daily tea rituals

Gentle movement (such as Tai Chi or yoga)

Meditation and breathwork

Energy balancing techniques

…can help align the biofield, nourish the ultrasonic core, and foster the conditions for quantum-level healing.

Listen and Be Inspired

Episode 2 of The Resonant Body podcast invites you to explore the mysteries of quantum change and energy medicine with Dr. Christina Ross. Pour yourself a cup of Island VitaliTEA, breathe deeply, and open your awareness to the possibility of healing beyond the biochemical model.

Together, science and spirit remind us that wellness is not something to chase—it is something to restore, balance, and cultivate within.
