When a migraine hits, your hands can go to your head to hold the head, but what if the points you were touching were supporting releasing excess energy - as seen in the opening picture, the ESR's or Emotional Stress Release points can be intuitively used. As we learn more about Amber Horrox's journey with migraines, she shines a light on how she discovered her way back from the intense pain of migraines. Check out this podcast and others for Migraine Awareness Month.

Migraine Awareness Month

What if healing isn’t about becoming someone new?

What if healing is about remembering who you were before pain convinced you otherwise?

That question sits at the heart of our latest Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell podcast episode featuring author, educator, advocate, and podcast host Amber Horrox.

Amber’s story is one that resonates deeply with anyone who has lived with chronic illness, persistent pain, or a health challenge that slowly changes the landscape of daily life. After living with migraines for nearly two decades, Amber experienced a dramatic shift in 2018 when migraine became a disabling force that could no longer be pushed aside. Like many people navigating chronic health conditions, she found herself facing difficult questions about identity, purpose, and what it meant to move forward when life no longer looked the way she had planned.

Yet what emerged from that experience was not simply a story of illness.

It became a story of voice.

Audio Version

When Pain Becomes a Messenger

One of the themes Amber explores through her work is the idea that chronic illness often asks us to listen differently.

Modern culture encourages us to push through discomfort, work harder, and keep moving forward. Yet many people living with migraine discover that these strategies can become exhausting when the body is asking for something else.

Migraine can interrupt plans, careers, relationships, and personal goals. It can create uncertainty and isolation. It can also become an invitation to slow down long enough to hear what has been overlooked.

Amber’s writing reflects this beautifully. Through her platform, Warrior Within, and her podcast, Your Migraine Story Matters, she creates space for honest conversations about the emotional, mental, and physical realities of living with chronic migraine.

Rather than focusing solely on symptom management, Amber encourages people to reclaim their story.

To reclaim their voice.

To recognize that their experience matters.

For many individuals living with invisible illness, being heard can be one of the most powerful forms of healing.

The Power of Storytelling in Recovery

Stories help us make sense of our lives.

When we tell our story, we begin to organize our experiences, identify patterns, and uncover strengths we may not have recognized before.

Research in psychology has long demonstrated that narrative and meaning-making can support resilience during difficult life transitions. Writing, journaling, and sharing our experiences can help reduce feelings of isolation while strengthening self-awareness.

Amber discovered this through her own healing journey.

Writing became more than expression.

It became a bridge back to herself.

As she explored her experiences through words, she found clarity, connection, and ultimately a pathway to helping others navigate similar challenges.

Through her podcast, books, and educational programs, she now helps people discover that their story is not simply a record of pain—it can become a source of empowerment.

The First Flight: A Symbol for Healing

For this podcast episode, we drew inspiration from one of Canada’s most remarkable moments in innovation and courage: the First Flight of the Silver Dart over Baddeck Bay in 1909.

When the Silver Dart lifted from the ice-covered bay, it represented more than a technological achievement.

It represented possibility.

It represented trust in a vision that others could not yet see.

It represented preparation, belief, and collaboration.

Healing often follows a similar path.

Rarely do we see the entire journey ahead.

Instead, we take one step.

One choice.

One conversation.

One supportive practice.

One day at a time.

And slowly, what once felt impossible begins to feel attainable.

Like the Silver Dart, healing requires preparation.

Like the Silver Dart, healing requires belief.

And like the Silver Dart, healing often requires collaboration with others who help us see what is possible.

A Tea Ritual for Courage and Clarity

Every episode of the podcast includes a mindful tea ritual, and for Amber’s conversation we selected a blend inspired by the spirit of the First Flight.

The combination of Pu-erh Tea and Lemon Verbena creates a beautiful balance between grounding and upliftment.

Pu-erh: Rooted Transformation

Pu-erh is an aged and fermented tea that reminds us that healing cannot always be rushed.

It teaches patience.

Integration.

Trust in the process.

Its spiritual essence encourages us to remain grounded while life unfolds around us.

Lemon Verbena: Lightness and Renewal

Lemon Verbena brings brightness to the blend.

Known for its calming and soothing qualities, it offers a gentle reminder that healing can include moments of ease and lightness.

Where Pu-erh roots us, Lemon Verbena helps us lift.

Together they reflect the balance so many migraine sufferers seek: stability and possibility, grounding and hope.

This Episode’s Affirmation

“Preparation, belief, and collaboration provide an aerial focus for success.”

As the tea steeps, we are reminded that healing is not something we force.

It is something we nurture.

Your Migraine Story Matters

One of the greatest gifts Amber offers through her work is the reminder that no one should have to navigate migraine alone.

Whether you are newly diagnosed, have been living with migraines for years, or are supporting someone who experiences them, your experience matters.

Your questions matter.

Your frustrations matter.

Your victories matter.

And your story matters.

Healing is not only about reducing symptoms.

It is also about reconnecting with the person beneath the pain.

It is about rediscovering joy.

Finding community.

Reclaiming confidence.

And learning to trust yourself again.

Learn More

We invite you to listen to this inspiring conversation with Amber Horrox on the Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell podcast.

You can also connect with Amber through:

And if you’re looking for a moment of calm today, brew a cup of tea, take a deep breath, and ask yourself:

What part of my story is ready to be heard?

Because sometimes the first step toward healing is not finding the answer.

Sometimes it is finding your voice.

June is Migraine Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding, reducing stigma, and offering support to the millions of people worldwide who live with migraine every day.

Migraine is often misunderstood. It is not simply a headache. It is a complex neurological condition that affects more than one billion people globally and is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. For many individuals, migraines impact work, family life, relationships, sleep, mental health, and overall quality of life.

At the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health and through the Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell podcast, we believe healing conversations matter. Throughout the month of June, we are dedicating our podcast series to exploring migraines from a broader perspective—one that looks beyond symptom suppression and asks deeper questions about regulation, resilience, recovery, and whole-person wellness.

There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Migraine Story

One of the greatest challenges with migraines is that no two experiences are exactly alike.

While research continues to explore neurological pathways, genetics, hormones, inflammation, environmental triggers, and lifestyle factors, many people discover that their healing journey becomes highly personalized. What works for one person may not work for another.

This is why our Migraine Awareness Month series brings together guests with diverse experiences and expertise. Together, we explore practical tools, personal stories, and holistic approaches that may help people better understand their own migraine patterns and support their body’s natural healing processes.

Our goal is not to replace medical care. Rather, it is to expand the conversation and help individuals discover additional pathways that may support their wellness journey.

This Month’s Podcast Themes

Throughout June, we will be sharing conversations that explore migraines through several important lenses:

Understanding the Body’s Priorities

Many people living with migraines spend years experimenting with treatments, diets, supplements, medications, and lifestyle changes.

What if the body has priorities that can help guide the healing process?

Our guests explore how stress regulation, nervous system balance, emotional resilience, movement, hydration, sleep quality, and energetic awareness may influence migraine patterns. By understanding the body’s signals, we may be able to reduce the trial-and-error process and create more personalized approaches to recovery.

The Power of Story and Metaphor

One of our featured conversations is with Linda from The Mindful Migraine, who shares her remarkable journey from experiencing nearly daily migraines to finding greater freedom through mindfulness and holistic practices.

Linda’s doctoral work explores metaphors and how the language we use shapes our healing experience.

When someone says:

“I’m drowning.”

“I’m carrying too much.”

“Healing feels like an uphill battle.”

They are revealing more than symptoms. They are expressing how they are experiencing their life and their healing journey.

Could changing the metaphor begin changing the experience?

This fascinating conversation explores how language influences mindset, emotional regulation, and even the way we perceive our path toward wellness.

Audio Version

Mindful Migraine Blog

Movement as Medicine

Another recurring theme throughout the series is the role of movement.

Tai Chi, gentle stretching, breath awareness, and mindful movement practices can help cultivate regulation within the nervous system. These practices encourage us to move from a state of constant vigilance into one of awareness, flow, and adaptability.

Many people with migraines discover that learning to notice tension patterns before they become overwhelming can be a powerful piece of prevention.

Rather than forcing the body, mindful movement teaches us to listen to it.

Releasing the Fight

One of the most profound lessons shared by our guests is that healing is not always about trying harder.

Sometimes healing begins when we soften.

Sometimes it begins when we release patterns of tension, over-responsibility, perfectionism, or constant vigilance.

Sometimes healing begins by allowing ourselves to stop fighting and start listening.

This theme is beautifully reflected in one of the Cape Breton Tea Company blends featured this month: Releasing the Warrior.

A Tea Ritual for Migraine Awareness

Each podcast episode includes a tea ritual designed to encourage mindfulness and self-care.

For our conversation with Linda, we feature Releasing the Warrior, a blend created to support the Wood Element in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Today’s affirmation is:

“My ability to let the fight go begins the healing process.”

Two herbs highlighted in this blend are parsley and coriander:

Parsley symbolizes purification, clearing, and renewal.

Coriander offers cooling energy, clarity, and gentle emotional release.

Whether you enjoy tea or another mindful ritual, creating moments of pause throughout the day can become an important part of supporting balance and resilience.

Small Steps Can Create Meaningful Change

Throughout Migraine Awareness Month, we invite you to remember that healing is rarely a single event.

It is often a collection of small moments:

A better night’s sleep.

A few minutes of breathing.

A walk outdoors.

A Tai Chi practice.

A nourishing meal.

A supportive conversation.

A new perspective.

A different story.

Understanding Body Pain – Episode 1: Hands, Wrists, Arms & Shoulders

Pain is one of the body’s most intricate communication systems. It alerts us when something is out of balance, misaligned, or overworked. Yet pain is rarely the true source of a problem—more often, it is the loudest voice in a much larger conversation happening between muscles, meridians, fascia, reflexes, and the nervous system. In our first episode of the Understanding Body Pain trilogy, we explored this complexity through the lens of the hands, wrists, arms, and shoulders—areas that often carry tension from not only physical strain but also emotional load and energetic imbalance.

At the heart of this conversation lies the science behind pain and the remarkable system of Touch for Health, created by Dr. John Thie and rooted in the groundbreaking work of Dr. George Goodheart. These tools offer a way to understand pain not as an isolated event, but as a reflection of the body’s deeper patterns of communication.

Audio Only

Pain Is Not the Problem — It’s the Messenger

Modern medicine often teaches us to chase the symptom:
a wrist brace for wrist pain, a shoulder stretch for shoulder tension, or a topical cream for elbow discomfort.

But pain is rarely localized. A weak anterior deltoid can cause wrist strain. Tight forearm flexors can come from misalignment in the upper thoracic spine. Shoulder pain can originate from stress patterns in the jaw. Even finger stiffness can link back to the small intestine meridian.

Touch for Health works because it respects the body’s interconnected nature. It recognizes that:

Muscles communicate through meridians

Meridians communicate through organ systems

Organ systems influence posture, mood, and function

Structural misalignment affects emotional and energetic flow

This is why in Episode 1 we shared examples of how upper body pain often points to deeper imbalances in the body’s bioenergetic network. Once you understand these relationships, you can finally stop fighting pain—and start listening to what it’s trying to tell you.

The Science Behind Touch for Health

While many people assume that energy-based systems are “woo-woo,” the science behind Touch for Health is grounded in:

1. Applied Kinesiology & Neurophysiology

Dr. George Goodheart discovered predictable relationships between muscles and organ systems. For example:

The deltoid corresponds with the lung meridian

The supraspinatus aligns with the central meridian

These links reflect neurophysiological pathways—reflex arcs—that influence strength, tone, and function.

2. Proprioception & Biofeedback

Muscle monitoring allows us to access the body’s feedback loop. When a muscle responds weakly, it indicates an imbalance in the energetic or neurological pattern behind it—not simply a lack of strength. This makes muscle monitoring a precise tool for identifying the priority behind pain patterns.

3. Fascia & Biotensegrity

Pain often travels along fascial lines. The upper body, for example, contains spiraling patterns that cross from shoulder to hip, wrist to neck, and elbow to ribcage. Touch for Health techniques—like neurolymphatic reflexes and neurovascular points—help restore hydration, flow, and mobility through these fascial chains.

4. Chinese Medicine & the Five Elements

Touch for Health bridges Western anatomy with Eastern philosophy. Pain is understood not only as mechanical strain but as energetic stagnation. For example:

Wrist and elbow pain often relate to Metal (lungs, large intestine)

Shoulder tension may reflect Wood (liver, gallbladder)

Grip strength relates to Water (kidneys, bladder)

This gives practitioners and individuals a holistic map of pain—physical, emotional, and energetic.

Tools That Transform Pain

In our first episode on hands and arms, we demonstrated several Touch for Health concepts that anyone can explore:

1. Muscle Monitoring

Helps identify the priority imbalance rather than guessing at symptoms.

2. Emotional Stress Release Points

Releases mental tension that contributes to chronic pain patterns.

3. Neurolymphatic Reflex Points

Helps reduce inflammation and restore flow through muscle and organ systems.

4. Meridian Tracing

Clears stagnant energy and supports the body’s natural healing pathways.

5. Posture Awareness

Simple alignment shifts in the shoulders, wrists, and neck can dramatically change pain levels.

Each technique empowers the individual, restoring the understanding that healing doesn’t come from fighting the body—but partnering with it.

A New Way to Experience Pain & Healing

The goal of Touch for Health and bioenergetic wellness is not just relief—it is awareness.
When you know how to interpret the body’s signals, pain becomes a guide rather than a barrier.

Our trilogy will continue to explore:

Episode 2: Feet, Ankles, Knees & Hips

Episode 3: Back & Neck

Each episode builds on the science and self-care practices introduced in Episode 1, offering practical tools and a deeper understanding of how pain reveals our path to healing.

You can reach out to Denise Cambiotti at www.muscletuners.ca to learn more about her special programs and the power of her techniques.

Have you ever noticed that most people only make a lifestyle change after a warning sign appears — a diagnosis, a pain, or the feeling that something is “off”? It’s almost as if the body has to shout before we finally stop and listen.

In our modern world, we’ve been taught to look for symptoms rather than signals. The medical model has shaped our thinking to wait until something is wrong before we seek help. But in that waiting, we miss the quieter, more subtle communications that tell us where our energy is blocked or where we’ve lost connection with ourselves.

In Episode 2 of the Be Well Podcast — “Body Maintenance: Living Wellness”, I sit down once again with Dr. Kate Montgomery, ND, and Dr. Denise Cambiotti, DHC of Muscle Tuners International, to explore how we can shift from reacting to imbalance to living in ongoing awareness and energetic flow.

Audio Version

Why We Wait

We wait because we’ve been conditioned to separate the physical body from the emotional and energetic self. When we’re tired, we push through. When we feel discomfort, we reach for a quick fix. When we sense that something is wrong, we hope it will simply pass.

And sometimes it does — for a while.

But the habits that create imbalance are deeply ingrained. They serve emotional purposes as well as physical ones: comfort, distraction, identity, or even belonging. The late-night snack, the skipped walk, the overloaded calendar — these patterns fill a space. Changing them requires more than willpower; it requires awareness and compassion for why we developed them in the first place.

When the body finally sends a louder message — pain, fatigue, brain fog, digestive distress — it’s often been whispering for months or years. Those whispers were the body’s request for attention, not punishment. The shift to wellness begins the moment we choose to listen.

The Illusion of “Starting Over”

When people decide to “get healthy,” they often think they’re starting from scratch — a new diet, a new exercise routine, a new mindset. But wellness isn’t something we start or stop. It’s something we return to, moment by moment.

Just like the breath, wellness is cyclical — inhale, exhale; rest, rise; release, renew.

The key to living wellness isn’t about striving for perfection. It’s about maintenance — gently supporting the systems that already know how to function in balance. Bioenergetic wellness reminds us that our body is intelligent. It knows how to heal. What it needs most is our consistent partnership.

When we use simple energy balancing techniques, we remind our body how to flow. We begin to sense tension before it becomes pain, fatigue before it becomes burnout, and emotional unrest before it turns into anxiety. These subtle corrections keep us aligned, resilient, and open to joy.

Rituals, Not Routines

A routine is something we have to do.
A ritual is something we choose to do with intention.

In Body Maintenance: Living Wellness, we shared a tea ritual with Playtime Tea — a blend of hazelnut chocolate, peppermint, and apple blossoms. The aroma alone brings playfulness and clarity, reminding us that joy and care can coexist.

When we turn our habits into rituals, we transform the energy behind them. Drinking tea becomes a moment to breathe and reconnect. Stretching becomes a conversation with our body. Breathing becomes a release of tension. Even washing our hands can become a mindful act of renewal.

Wellness lives in those small moments — the pauses between doing. That’s where we meet ourselves most truthfully.

Choosing and Staying in Wellness

So how do we stay there?

The truth is, balance is never static. The work of wellness is not to hold still but to remain in motion with awareness. Some days, we fall back into old patterns — and that’s okay. The power lies in noticing and returning.

To choose wellness daily:

Start small. Choose one ritual that brings you peace — a cup of tea, a breath, a stretch — and make it non-negotiable.

Acknowledge your wins. Every moment of awareness is a success, not a failure.

Check your energy. Notice your mood, your posture, your breath. Where are you holding tension? Where can you let go?

Surround yourself with support. Community and conversation reinforce intention. Share your journey.

Stay curious. Instead of asking, “What’s wrong?” ask, “What’s my body trying to teach me?”

When we build these patterns, we create a foundation that supports every system of the body — physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Over time, these choices become who we are.

Living Wellness Every Day

Wellness is not a project or a destination — it’s a practice of being in relationship with your energy and your choices. It’s listening before the whisper becomes a shout.

As you move through your day, consider: what would it feel like to live wellness — to treat your energy, your habits, and your time as sacred?

The answer begins with one conscious breath, one sip of tea, one gentle moment of awareness. That’s where transformation lives.

Discovering our innate healing potential is a true gift to treasure...how can you return to this state of being and release the angst of dis-ease. Check out this new podcast trilogy exploring the experience of wellness.

How often do we wait until every medical test has been run and every conventional option exhausted before asking a different question—What if my body already knows how to heal?

That question opens the door to bioenergetic wellness, where the language of health is energy, vibration, and intention. It’s the focus of our newest Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell podcast episode, “Beyond the Physical: The Experience of Wellness,” featuring two remarkable practitioners: Kate Montgomery, author and pioneer in sports and frequency healing, and Denise Cambiotti, founder of Muscle Tuners International.

Together we explored how the simplest of techniques—often taking only minutes—can shift years of discomfort, tension, or emotional weight. These aren’t magic tricks; they’re expressions of how energy and consciousness truly function. When blocked energy is released, life begins to flow again.

Why People Turn to Energy Work

Most of us were taught to see the body as a machine: fix the part that hurts and everything will work again. But anyone who has lived with chronic pain, fatigue, or emotional stress knows it isn’t that simple. Beneath every symptom lies an energetic pattern—a combination of thoughts, feelings, and physiology.

Many people arrive at bioenergetic techniques after feeling hopeless. They’ve tried medication, physiotherapy, or surgery, and nothing has lasted. When they finally experience the gentle yet profound effects of tools such as muscle monitoring, acupressure, or five-element balancing, something inside them changes. The realization dawns that healing doesn’t have to be hard; it only has to be aligned.

The Science Behind the “Woo Woo”

Both Kate and Denise remind us that what some dismiss as “woo woo” is grounded in physics, biophysics, and quantum science. Every cell emits frequency; every thought carries measurable vibration. When energy pathways—known in Chinese medicine as meridians—become congested, communication within the body falters.

A few light touches or movements can repattern that communication. The nervous system relaxes, muscles balance, emotions surface and dissolve. Brain function, coordination, and clarity return. It’s not mysterious—it’s the body remembering coherence.

Moments of Transformation

In the podcast, Kate shares stories of Ironman athletes who recovered stamina and focus after minutes of tailored bodywork. Denise speaks of clients whose chronic shoulder or jaw pain disappeared after a short muscle-tuning session. Listeners may recognize the pattern: the moment tension releases, old beliefs release with it.

One woman described feeling “like the lights turned back on” after years of dull fatigue. Another realized she no longer needed to protect an old injury—and with that awareness, her range of motion doubled. These transformations happen quietly, often with tears or laughter, because the body is finally heard.

The Simplicity of Practice

Bioenergetic wellness is not reserved for practitioners. Anyone can begin by learning small, daily techniques—hydration, cross-crawls, breathing patterns, tracing meridians, or gentle self-touch at specific points. Five minutes of mindful movement can reset energy flow for the entire day.

The key is listening. When you notice where you feel tight, anxious, or disconnected, you already have the first clue. Intention plus awareness equals change.

Tea, Stillness, and Connection

Every Be Well episode begins with a tea ritual, and this one features Just Chill’n—a Cape Breton Tea Company blend of black tea, cranberry, and calendula petals.
Black tea grounds the body, cranberries cleanse the heart’s emotional field, and calendula brings sunshine to the spirit. As we sip, we invite harmony to all three levels of being.

That pause between sips mirrors what happens in an energy session: a breath, a moment of stillness, and suddenly the system reorganizes itself toward balance.

Living Beyond Limitation

When we release stored emotion or outdated belief, we create space for vitality, creativity, and joy. Clients often say, “I feel lighter,” or “I can breathe again.” These simple statements are profound markers of transformation. They indicate that the person has stepped back into the flow of life rather than fighting against it.

Both Kate and Denise see their work not as curing but as facilitating remembering—helping people reconnect to their innate ability to heal. That awareness ripples outward, improving relationships, work performance, and overall quality of life.

Looking Ahead: Part 2—Body Maintenance / Living Wellness

This episode is the first in a trilogy exploring empowerment through energy. Part 2, “Body Maintenance / Living Wellness,” will dive deeper into how to sustain these shifts—how regular energetic “tune-ups” can prevent imbalance long before symptoms appear. Just as we maintain our vehicles, we can maintain our personal energy systems through daily rituals, movement, hydration, and intention.

Living wellness means treating the body as an intelligent partner, not a problem to fix. It’s a lifestyle of listening, adjusting, and celebrating coherence.

A Call to Awareness

If you’re reading this and wondering whether bioenergetic wellness could make a difference for you, start small. Take one mindful breath, place your hand over your heart, and thank your body for its constant communication. That single act of recognition begins the healing dialogue.

As we continue this series, may each conversation, cup of tea, and gentle movement remind you that the power to transform has always been within you. Energy follows attention—so direct yours toward living fully, freely, and well.
