What are you holding onto that no longer supports the life you are creating?

In Episode 4 of Emotions & Healing, we arrive at the Metal Element—the season of refinement, breath, boundaries, and conscious release. I am joined by Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND, and Denise Cambiotti, HCD, CIH BioEW, as we explore the Lung and Large Intestine meridians through the perspectives of Five Element Theory, Touch for Health®, movement, and BioEnergetic Wellness.

The Metal Element asks us to notice what we are carrying physically, emotionally, and mentally. It invites us to breathe more fully, honour grief with compassion, recognize regret or guilt without becoming defined by it, and create room for new possibilities.

What the Metal Element Teaches Us

In Five Element Theory, Metal is associated with autumn, refinement, discernment, boundaries, and letting go. Just as trees release their leaves, we are reminded that release is not failure or loss. It can be a natural and necessary part of renewal.

The Lungs govern breath, rhythm, immunity, and our relationship with inspiration—both the air we receive and the ideas or possibilities that give life meaning. The Large Intestine supports elimination and helps us consider what we retain, what we release, and how freely we can make space for what comes next.

When the Metal Element is supported, we may experience clearer boundaries, fuller breathing, renewed inspiration, and a greater ability to move through change. When it is challenged, grief, guilt, regret, shallow breathing, tension, or difficulty letting go may become more noticeable.

Emotions as Information

Grief, guilt, and regret are not signs of weakness. They are emotional experiences asking for breath, space, and compassion. Rather than forcing them away, we can become curious about what they are revealing.

Throughout this series, we have been exploring emotions as signals rather than flaws. The BioEnergetic Wellness Formula supports this process by helping us establish a goal and intention, notice what is present, activate a simple wellness tool, and learn through experience. This person-led approach encourages us to participate in our wellbeing without becoming attached to one predetermined outcome.

Metal reminds us that we do not need to erase the past to move forward. We can honour what has mattered, keep the wisdom, and release the weight.

The Body’s Expression of Breath and Release

From a Touch for Health® perspective, the Metal Element includes muscles connected with the Lung and Large Intestine meridians.

Lung-related muscles

Anterior Serratus

Deltoid

Large Intestine-related muscles

Quadratus Lumborum

Hamstrings

Fascia Lata

Together, these muscles contribute to posture, breathing, stability, and the spiral connections linking the upper and lower body. When breathing becomes shallow or the ribs, shoulders, hips, or legs become restricted, the body may be expressing an experience that has not yet found enough room to move.

In our conversation, Denise and Kate share practical observations about breathing efficiency, posture, movement, performance, and the ways emotional stress can influence the body. We also explore simple practices such as breath awareness, tapping, diaphragm awareness, posture cues, and intentional movement.

Meet Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND

Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND, is a Holistic Health Practitioner, Certified Sports Massage Therapist, Naturopathic Doctor, BioEnergetic Wellness Professional, and author. With a background in respiratory therapy and decades of experience supporting athletes, performers, musicians, professionals, and individuals navigating life transitions, Kate brings an important understanding of breath, performance, emotional resilience, and nervous system regulation.

Her work bridges Western healthcare knowledge with practical holistic approaches. In this episode, Kate draws on her respiratory background and experience with high-performance environments to explore how breath can influence focus, anxiety, recovery, confidence, and the ability to move through emotionally heavy periods.

Meet Denise Cambiotti, HCD, CIH BioEW

Denise Cambiotti, HCD, CIH BioEW, is a BioEnergetic Wellness educator and the founder of Muscle Tuners International. She specializes in Touch for Health®, muscle monitoring, meridian balancing, neurolymphatic techniques, and movement-based wellness education. She is also co-creator of the Movement Master Program just launched in July of 2026.

Denise has extensive experience collaborating with physiotherapists, massage therapists, recreational therapists, and movement professionals. Her gift is helping people understand how emotional stress, posture, muscle function, breathing patterns, and meridian relationships weave together. She makes complex ideas approachable and shares practical tools that help individuals become active participants in their own wellbeing.

Tea with Intentions: Thyme Passages

Before beginning our conversation, we pause for our Tea with Intentions ritual. The featured Cape Breton Tea Company blend for the Metal Element is Thyme Passages, selected to support conscious release, fuller breathing, and the possibility of expansion after contraction.

The Spiritual Essence of Alfalfa

Alfalfa carries the essence of nourishment, renewal, and gentle strengthening. It reminds us that after loss, change, or emotional depletion, rebuilding can happen gradually. We do not have to rush the process. We can receive support and allow resilience to return one breath and one choice at a time.

The Spiritual Essence of Elecampane

Elecampane is associated with breath, grounding, and belonging. Its presence in this blend invites us to feel safe enough to exhale fully. It reminds us that release becomes possible when the body senses support and when we allow ourselves the space to let go without force.

Tea affirmation:

“I create an expansion of breath to clear my mind and envision new opportunities.”

As you sip, allow your breath to soften the chest, ribs, and belly. Notice what becomes possible when you create a little more space within yourself.

A Simple Metal Element Reflection

Place one hand over your chest and one over your lower abdomen.

Inhale slowly through your nose and notice the gentle expansion of your ribs. Exhale fully through your mouth and imagine releasing something you no longer need to carry.

With each breath, invite space. With each exhale, invite clarity.

Then consider:

What am I holding onto that no longer serves me?

What needs more breath, compassion, or room?

What new possibility could emerge if I released the weight but kept the wisdom?

Episode Show Notes

In this episode, we explore:

The role of the Metal Element within the Five Element Wheel

The Lung and Large Intestine meridians

Grief, guilt, regret, boundaries, and conscious release

How breathing patterns influence posture, movement, and emotional regulation

Muscles associated with the Lung and Large Intestine meridians

Breath awareness and movement tools for everyday self-care

How athletes and performers use breath to support focus and performance

Why release can create room for inspiration and new opportunities

Continue Your Wellness Journey

This conversation is an invitation to listen more carefully to your breath, body, and emotions. It is also an opportunity to develop practical skills that support wellbeing beyond the podcast.

Explore the Movement Mastery Program under the Wellness Training tab at GreenwellCenter.com. This program helps you deepen movement awareness, recognize compensatory patterns, and develop practical strategies for supporting organization, resilience, and ease.

Join us for the Artfilled Wellness Retreat, where movement, music, intuitive art, nature, Tea with Intentions, and the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula come together in an immersive experience of creativity, connection, and self-discovery.

You can also develop foundational skills through Touch for Health® Level 1. The course introduces accessible techniques for muscle monitoring, meridian awareness, posture, movement, emotional stress release, and everyday self-care.

In the next episode of Emotions & Healing, we move into the Water Element and explore the Kidney and Bladder meridians through the lens of fear, anxiety, hydration, and resilience.

Until then, breathe deeply, release gently, and trust the wisdom your body is sharing.
