Caregiving is often described as an act of love. It can also become one of the most physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually demanding roles a person will ever hold.

In this episode of Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell, I welcome author and caregiver advocate Sandy Andress for a heartfelt conversation about what it means not only to care for someone you love, but to continue finding moments of connection, meaning, resilience, and hope along the way.

A Book Born from Lived Experience and Faith

Over the past five years, Sandy has walked the caregiving journey with two of her siblings. Following the death of her sister in 2024, she felt led by God to write Caregiver’s Guide as a source of practical support and encouragement for others who unexpectedly find themselves in the role of caregiver.

At the heart of Sandy’s work is one essential message: you are not alone.

While many caregiving resources focus primarily on protecting the caregiver from exhaustion, Sandy’s approach also explores how to build and maintain a healthy relationship with the loved one receiving care. Her book and workshop offer guidance for open communication, self-reflection, navigating healthcare relationships, and recognizing both personal strengths and areas where additional support may be needed.

Audio Version

From Surviving Caregiving to Thriving Together

For this conversation, I wanted to move beyond the familiar discussion of caregiver burnout and ask a different question:

How can caregivers thrive with the people they love?

Thriving does not mean that every day is easy. It does not erase illness, loss, uncertainty, or fatigue. Instead, it creates space for both people to continue experiencing relationship, dignity, choice, tenderness, humour, rest, and moments of joy.

Sometimes thriving is found in a meaningful conversation. Sometimes it is sharing a cup of tea, sitting quietly together, asking for help, or recognizing that the caregiver’s wellbeing matters too.

Caregiving becomes more sustainable when generosity does not require us to give ourselves away.

GenerosiTEA: Compassion in Action

For this episode, I chose 1897 GenerosiTEA from the Cape Breton Tea Company, with the affirmation:

“Open your heart to hope and optimism, for your resilience and pure generosity inspire others.”

The spiritual essence of currant and blueberry working together offers a beautiful reflection for caregivers. Blueberry invites wisdom, nourishment, and resilience. Currant carries renewal, vitality, and quiet strength.

Together, they remind us that true generosity is not about becoming depleted. It is about supporting our own vitality so that what we share with others comes from a place of steadiness and renewal.

This also opens an important distinction between sympathy, empathy, and compassion. Sympathy and empathy can sometimes draw us so deeply into another person’s experience that we begin carrying their pain within our own body. Compassion allows us to remain loving, present, and connected without losing our own centre.

Compassion is generosity in action when our care for another person also honours our own wellbeing.

Two Simple BioEnergetic Wellness Tools for Caregivers

Each episode of the podcast is intentionally shaped through the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula so that listeners do more than hear a conversation. They are invited into an experience of awareness, activation, reflection, and rejuvenation.

1. Emotional Stress Release Points

Place your fingertips gently across your forehead, just above your eyebrows, and breathe slowly.

These Emotional Stress Release points can help calm a busy mind, reduce the feeling of overwhelm, support clearer problem-solving, and create space for new possibilities to emerge.

For caregivers who are continually making decisions, organizing appointments, communicating with family members, and responding to unexpected challenges, this brief pause can help restore a sense of centre before taking the next step.

2. Cook’s Hook-Ups

Part 1: Cross one ankle over the other. Stretch your arms forward, cross one wrist over the other, interlace your fingers, and gently bring your hands toward your chest. Take several slow, comfortable breaths. Part 2: Put your feet side by side, and then place your fingertips together and place infront of the belly. Relax and breathe deeply.

Cook’s Hook-Ups can support calm, sleep, clearer thinking, reduced tension, connection, and communication. It can be practised by the caregiver, by the person receiving care when appropriate, or together as a shared moment of settling and reconnection.

Sometimes becoming calmer ourselves completely changes the interaction we are having with someone else.

Bringing the Book to Life Through the Workshop

Sandy’s workshop transforms the principles of Caregiver’s Guide into practical, everyday application.

Participants explore what open communication can look like in real situations and receive a companion workbook with reflection questions, exercises, and practical worksheets. Sharing is always optional, allowing each person to learn and reflect within a safe and compassionate environment.

Participants will receive a copy of Caregiver’s Guide, a companion workbook, practical caregiving resources, and space within the book to record appointments, medications, treatment details, notes, and personal reflections.

The workshop is designed to help caregivers leave feeling seen, supported, renewed, and better equipped to care for both their loved one and themselves.

You can find the workshop details here: https://www.facebook.com/share/1EadfD3D5F/

You can order the book here: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0H5L2SP69?ref_=cb_interstitial_us_ca_desktop_unrec_location_unk_dp_dp

A Reflection for the Caregiving Journey

As you reflect on your own experience, consider this question:

What might make caregiving feel a little lighter—not because the circumstances change, but because your relationship with them does?

Perhaps a new boundary is needed. Perhaps it is time to ask for help. Perhaps you need rest, a clearer conversation, or permission to experience joy without guilt.

The smallest shift in awareness can become the beginning of a very different journey.

Listen and Learn More

Join Sandy Andress and me for this meaningful episode of Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell as we explore faith, communication, caregiver resilience, practical support, and the possibility of thriving together.

Intuition, Art, Frequency, and the Power of What We Create Together

We are delighted to announce that Marian Egan — Complementary Health Advisor & Coach, award-winning author, artist, creator, and international speaker — will be joining us from Ireland for the Cape Breton Island Energy & Arts Immersion Retreat in August 2026.

Register here

Marian brings a rare and deeply integrated perspective to wellness: one that bridges art, intuition, frequency, and embodied self-care. Her work reminds us that creativity is not an “extra” — it is a language through which the body, nervous system, and spirit communicate.

A Collaboration Rooted in Shared Vision

Marian Egan and Dr. Michelle Greenwell first met online at the Knowlative Conference in 2023, and from that meeting a rich collaborative relationship began to unfold. Since then, they have partnered on multiple award-winning and internationally recognized projects, including:

Movement and Music Classes (Award-Winning, 2025)

The Magnifying Peace Project (Award-Winning, 2025)

Symphony of Radiance (2026)

World Mental Health Day Oct 10 (Award-Winning, 2025)

Numerous shared podcast episodes exploring intuition, healing, and creative embodiment

S3 E28 Center your Intuition with Marian Egan and Tanya Levy

S4 E 14 The Power to Heal Yourself with Marian Egan

S5 E3 Releasing Chronic Pain with Marian Egan

Dr Michelle and Marian are currently co-authoring two books exploring the Movement and Music/Symphony of Radiance NeuroArts programs — examining the power behind painting, frequency numbers, layered programming, and the lived experience of intuitive creation.

This retreat marks a rare opportunity to experience this collaborative energy in person, within the land-based, community-centred container of Cape Breton Island.

Marian’s Work: NeuroArts as Self-Care

Marian is the creator of six intuitive card decks, each designed as a NeuroArts tool to support balance, insight, and wellbeing. Her decks combine:

Original artwork

Clear intuitive messages

A unique frequency number that supports energetic resonance

Together, they offer self-care at your fingertips — inviting people to connect with their inner wisdom in moments of stress, pain, or uncertainty.

Her published decks include:

Wisdom, Insight and Foresight

I Dreamed a Dream

Empowered and Thriving

Beyond Transformation

Fifth Dimension

Free to Be Me

Across her work, Marian demonstrates how art can gently reduce pain, regulate the nervous system, and open new pathways of awareness.

What Marian Will Be Offering at the Retreat

During the retreat, Marian will guide participants through two deeply complementary experiences:

Intuitive Painting: Listening to What Emerges

Marian will create a safe, welcoming space for participants to explore the intuitive messages revealed through painting. No artistic background is required. This is about process, not product — allowing colour, form, and movement to express what words often cannot.

Painting becomes a mirror for inner knowing.

Gaining Insights as a Facilitator After Sessions

Drawing on her extensive experience working with clients and groups, Marian will share a powerful and often overlooked aspect of facilitation: what the facilitator receives after the session is complete.

This offering explores how reflection and integration reveal “secret messages” that may otherwise be missed — insights that deepen learning, prevent burnout, and strengthen energetic clarity. While similar ideas exist in Therapeutic Touch documentation, Marian takes this into a much deeper, lived, and embodied dimension.

If you:

work with clients

teach or facilitate groups

hold space for others

or regularly gather in intentional community

…this experience will profoundly enrich how you understand your role within energetic exchanges.

Why This Matters — and Why Now

The Cape Breton Island Energy & Arts Immersion Retreat is about learning together, not performing expertise. It is a space where intuition is honoured, creativity is welcomed, and insight is allowed to unfold naturally.

Marian’s presence brings a vital thread to the retreat:
the reminder that art, reflection, and frequency are essential tools for sustainable self-care and authentic facilitation.

This is not about doing more — it is about listening more deeply.

An Invitation

If you feel drawn to:

intuitive exploration

creative self-care

embodied learning

meaningful collaboration

and a retreat experience that honours both depth and gentleness

…we invite you to join us.

Spaces are limited to preserve intimacy and integration.

From Fear to Fuel: Amy’s Story

Imagine waking up one day unable to move, facing a future that feels uncertain and overwhelming. That was Amy Thurman’s reality when she experienced paralysis. But instead of letting fear paralyze her spirit, she chose to let it ignite her courage.

Amy’s journey from recovery to becoming an author is nothing short of extraordinary. She not only wrote about her experiences but also took the bold step of offering her book to celebrities in Los Angeles. As if that weren’t enough, Amy’s journey culminated in a surreal moment—seeing her name and photo illuminated on the iconic screens of Times Square.

Every step was marked by fear, but instead of holding her back, it propelled her forward. Amy embraced fear as a natural part of growth and used it as an opportunity to challenge herself, explore new possibilities, and ultimately rise above.

Why Fear is a Powerful Ally

Fear signals that we’re stepping into the unknown. While this can feel unsettling, it also means we’re on the verge of discovery and transformation. Instead of avoiding fear, we can:

Acknowledge It: Fear is a natural response to uncertainty and challenge. Recognizing its presence can help us better understand what it’s trying to tell us.

Reframe It: View fear not as a barrier but as a signal that growth is happening. Each time you face your fears, you’re expanding your comfort zone.

Use It as Motivation: Fear can create clarity and focus, helping us prepare and take action.

Tools for Facing Fear

In the episode, Amy also spoke about the practices and rituals that supported her journey. Highlighting these tools can help anyone facing their own fears. From the Cape Breton Tea Company they shared more about:

SoulTEA Harbour: This grounding blend encourages resilience and focus, offering a sense of calm when navigating challenges.

Bras D’Or Sunset: With its calming properties, this tea inspires reflection and hope, making it an excellent companion for moments of doubt.

Thyme: Known for its connection to courage, thyme has been used for centuries as a symbol of strength and bravery. Incorporating it into your daily routine—whether in tea or cooking—can be a small yet powerful reminder of your inner fortitude.

Moving Forward

Amy’s story, “Finding My Hero Within: A Journey from Incapacitation to Empowerment,” reminds us that fear doesn’t have to hold us back. In fact, it can propel us toward some of the most rewarding experiences of our lives. Whether it’s sharing your story with the world, pursuing a new career, or taking a leap of faith into the unknown, the key is to acknowledge fear and move forward anyway.

What steps will you take today to use fear as a guide? How can you turn that energy into momentum for growth and transformation? As Amy’s journey proves, rising above fear is not just possible—it’s powerful.
