What Is Anger Trying to Tell You?

Anger is powerful. It can tighten the body, change posture, influence decisions, and shape the way we move and respond. Yet anger is not necessarily something to suppress. What if it is information?

In Episode 6 of Emotions & Healing, Dr. Michelle Greenwell is joined by Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND, and Denise Cambiotti, HCD, CIH BioEW, to explore the Wood Element through the Liver and Gall Bladder meridians.

The Wood Element: Growth, Vision and Direction

Wood energy is associated with growth, expansion, planning, vision, decision-making, and forward movement. When balanced, we may feel clear, decisive, motivated, and flexible. When challenged, we may experience irritability, frustration, resentment, impulsive decisions, indecision, stagnation, or the feeling that we cannot move forward.

Audio Version

Liver and Gall Bladder: Flow and Choice

Within Five Element Theory, the Liver is associated with the smooth flow of energy, vision, planning, and emotional regulation. The Gall Bladder is connected with decision-making, courage, and action. Together they offer a useful framework for exploring what happens when we feel blocked, pushed, uncertain, or unable to choose a direction.

Through Touch for Health®, this episode also explores the Anterior Deltoid, Popliteus, Pectoralis Sternal, and Rhomboid muscle relationships and how emotional stress may be reflected through posture, coordination, movement, performance, and recovery.

From Frustration to Purposeful Action

Kate brings her experience with athletes, performers, and professionals to explore how frustration and anger can influence decision-making, performance, recovery, and confidence. Denise brings decades of experience in muscle monitoring, meridian balancing, and movement education to help us recognize how emotional stress may be reflected in the body.

The goal is not to label an emotion as good or bad. Instead, we can ask what the emotion may be pointing toward. Perhaps frustration tells us something needs to move. Perhaps resentment reveals something that needs to be acknowledged. Perhaps anger illuminates something we value deeply.

When we listen rather than immediately react, we create the possibility of transforming frustration into movement, resentment into clarity, and anger into purposeful direction.

Tea with Intentions: Releasing the Warrior

Our Tea with Intentions for the Wood Element is Releasing the Warrior from the Cape Breton Tea Company, chosen to accompany the transformation of anger into purposeful action.

Dandelion — Resilience and Release. Dandelion invites us to consider resilience, clearing, and release, reminding us that letting go of stored frustration can create room for a new direction.

Juniper Berry — Protection and Clarity. Juniper Berry invites protection, clarity, and refinement of direction. It reminds us that moving forward does not need to come from force.

Together, these herbs offer the central reflection from this episode: strength is not about force—it is about clarity, direction, and release.

As you sip, consider: Where am I holding tension? Where am I pushing too hard—or not moving at all?

Practical Awareness for Everyday Life

Wood invites us to notice how we respond when plans change, decisions feel difficult, or frustration begins to build. What happens to your breath? Do your shoulders tighten? Does your movement become forceful or hesitant? Do you become more impulsive, or do you stop moving forward altogether?

These observations are opportunities to become more familiar with your own patterns. Touch for Health® and BioEnergetic Wellness provide practical ways to explore movement, meridian tracing, muscle monitoring, intention, and simple balancing techniques while remaining curious about what changes.

Meet Kate Montgomery and Denise Cambiotti

Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND, is a Holistic Health Practitioner, Naturopathic Doctor, Certified Sports Massage Therapist, BioEnergetic Wellness Professional, and author. With a background in respiratory therapy and decades of experience working with athletes, performers, and professionals, Kate brings practical insight into emotional resilience, performance, movement, and recovery.

Denise Cambiotti, HCD, CIH BioEW, is a BioEnergetic Wellness educator and founder of Muscle Tuners International. Through Touch for Health®, muscle monitoring, meridian balancing, and movement education, Denise helps people understand how emotional stress can influence posture, movement, and wellbeing.

Reflection for the Week

Where in your life are you pushing too hard? Where might you need to soften, redirect, or release?

Continue Your Wellness Journey

Explore the Movement Mastery Program under the Wellness Training tab at GreenwellCenter.com to deepen your understanding of integrated movement assessment, posture, and self-awareness.

What are you holding onto that no longer supports the life you are creating?

In Episode 4 of Emotions & Healing, we arrive at the Metal Element—the season of refinement, breath, boundaries, and conscious release. I am joined by Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND, and Denise Cambiotti, HCD, CIH BioEW, as we explore the Lung and Large Intestine meridians through the perspectives of Five Element Theory, Touch for Health®, movement, and BioEnergetic Wellness.

The Metal Element asks us to notice what we are carrying physically, emotionally, and mentally. It invites us to breathe more fully, honour grief with compassion, recognize regret or guilt without becoming defined by it, and create room for new possibilities.

What the Metal Element Teaches Us

In Five Element Theory, Metal is associated with autumn, refinement, discernment, boundaries, and letting go. Just as trees release their leaves, we are reminded that release is not failure or loss. It can be a natural and necessary part of renewal.

The Lungs govern breath, rhythm, immunity, and our relationship with inspiration—both the air we receive and the ideas or possibilities that give life meaning. The Large Intestine supports elimination and helps us consider what we retain, what we release, and how freely we can make space for what comes next.

When the Metal Element is supported, we may experience clearer boundaries, fuller breathing, renewed inspiration, and a greater ability to move through change. When it is challenged, grief, guilt, regret, shallow breathing, tension, or difficulty letting go may become more noticeable.

Audio Only

Emotions as Information

Grief, guilt, and regret are not signs of weakness. They are emotional experiences asking for breath, space, and compassion. Rather than forcing them away, we can become curious about what they are revealing.

Throughout this series, we have been exploring emotions as signals rather than flaws. The BioEnergetic Wellness Formula supports this process by helping us establish a goal and intention, notice what is present, activate a simple wellness tool, and learn through experience. This person-led approach encourages us to participate in our wellbeing without becoming attached to one predetermined outcome.

Metal reminds us that we do not need to erase the past to move forward. We can honour what has mattered, keep the wisdom, and release the weight.

The Body’s Expression of Breath and Release

From a Touch for Health® perspective, the Metal Element includes muscles connected with the Lung and Large Intestine meridians.

Lung-related muscles

Anterior Serratus

Deltoid

Large Intestine-related muscles

Quadratus Lumborum

Hamstrings

Fascia Lata

Together, these muscles contribute to posture, breathing, stability, and the spiral connections linking the upper and lower body. When breathing becomes shallow or the ribs, shoulders, hips, or legs become restricted, the body may be expressing an experience that has not yet found enough room to move.

In our conversation, Denise and Kate share practical observations about breathing efficiency, posture, movement, performance, and the ways emotional stress can influence the body. We also explore simple practices such as breath awareness, tapping, diaphragm awareness, posture cues, and intentional movement.

Meet Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND

Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND, is a Holistic Health Practitioner, Certified Sports Massage Therapist, Naturopathic Doctor, BioEnergetic Wellness Professional, and author. With a background in respiratory therapy and decades of experience supporting athletes, performers, musicians, professionals, and individuals navigating life transitions, Kate brings an important understanding of breath, performance, emotional resilience, and nervous system regulation.

Her work bridges Western healthcare knowledge with practical holistic approaches. In this episode, Kate draws on her respiratory background and experience with high-performance environments to explore how breath can influence focus, anxiety, recovery, confidence, and the ability to move through emotionally heavy periods.

Meet Denise Cambiotti, HCD, CIH BioEW

Denise Cambiotti, HCD, CIH BioEW, is a BioEnergetic Wellness educator and the founder of Muscle Tuners International. She specializes in Touch for Health®, muscle monitoring, meridian balancing, neurolymphatic techniques, and movement-based wellness education. She is also co-creator of the Movement Master Program just launched in July of 2026.

Denise has extensive experience collaborating with physiotherapists, massage therapists, recreational therapists, and movement professionals. Her gift is helping people understand how emotional stress, posture, muscle function, breathing patterns, and meridian relationships weave together. She makes complex ideas approachable and shares practical tools that help individuals become active participants in their own wellbeing.

Tea with Intentions: Thyme Passages

Before beginning our conversation, we pause for our Tea with Intentions ritual. The featured Cape Breton Tea Company blend for the Metal Element is Thyme Passages, selected to support conscious release, fuller breathing, and the possibility of expansion after contraction.

The Spiritual Essence of Alfalfa

Alfalfa carries the essence of nourishment, renewal, and gentle strengthening. It reminds us that after loss, change, or emotional depletion, rebuilding can happen gradually. We do not have to rush the process. We can receive support and allow resilience to return one breath and one choice at a time.

The Spiritual Essence of Elecampane

Elecampane is associated with breath, grounding, and belonging. Its presence in this blend invites us to feel safe enough to exhale fully. It reminds us that release becomes possible when the body senses support and when we allow ourselves the space to let go without force.

Tea affirmation:

“I create an expansion of breath to clear my mind and envision new opportunities.”

As you sip, allow your breath to soften the chest, ribs, and belly. Notice what becomes possible when you create a little more space within yourself.

A Simple Metal Element Reflection

Place one hand over your chest and one over your lower abdomen.

Inhale slowly through your nose and notice the gentle expansion of your ribs. Exhale fully through your mouth and imagine releasing something you no longer need to carry.

With each breath, invite space. With each exhale, invite clarity.

Then consider:

What am I holding onto that no longer serves me?

What needs more breath, compassion, or room?

What new possibility could emerge if I released the weight but kept the wisdom?

Episode Show Notes

In this episode, we explore:

The role of the Metal Element within the Five Element Wheel

The Lung and Large Intestine meridians

Grief, guilt, regret, boundaries, and conscious release

How breathing patterns influence posture, movement, and emotional regulation

Muscles associated with the Lung and Large Intestine meridians

Breath awareness and movement tools for everyday self-care

How athletes and performers use breath to support focus and performance

Why release can create room for inspiration and new opportunities

Continue Your Wellness Journey

This conversation is an invitation to listen more carefully to your breath, body, and emotions. It is also an opportunity to develop practical skills that support wellbeing beyond the podcast.

Explore the Movement Mastery Program under the Wellness Training tab at GreenwellCenter.com. This program helps you deepen movement awareness, recognize compensatory patterns, and develop practical strategies for supporting organization, resilience, and ease.

You can also develop foundational skills through Touch for Health® Level 1. The course introduces accessible techniques for muscle monitoring, meridian awareness, posture, movement, emotional stress release, and everyday self-care.

In the next episode of Emotions & Healing, we move into the Water Element and explore the Kidney and Bladder meridians through the lens of fear, anxiety, hydration, and resilience.

Until then, breathe deeply, release gently, and trust the wisdom your body is sharing.

What are you taking in each day—and are you giving yourself the nourishment you truly need?

In Episode 3 of Emotions & Healing, Dr. Michelle Greenwell is joined by Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND, and Denise Cambiotti, DHC, CIH BioEW, to explore the wisdom of the Earth Element through the Five Element Theory, Touch for Health, and the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula.

The Earth Element invites us to think about nourishment in a much broader way. It includes the food we eat, but it also includes the thoughts, emotions, responsibilities, expectations, and experiences we take in each day. When the Earth Element is balanced, we may feel grounded, supported, compassionate, and able to care for others without losing our connection to ourselves.

The Earth Element: Nourishment, Stability, and Compassion

Within the Five Element Theory, the Earth Element is associated with stability, centeredness, nourishment, and our ability to digest life. It helps us transform what we receive into energy, understanding, resilience, and meaningful action.

When Earth energy is challenged, worry can become constant, caring can become over-responsibility, and compassion can become depletion. We may continue giving long after our own resources are exhausted. We may also find ourselves replaying experiences, carrying concerns for others, or struggling to receive the same care we so readily offer.

The Earth Element reminds us that self-care is not separate from caring for others. It is the foundation that allows compassion to remain sustainable.

Audio Version

The Stomach and Spleen Meridians

The Stomach Meridian supports our ability to receive nourishment and engage with life. It is connected with how we take in food, information, experiences, and opportunities. It also invites us to consider whether we feel supported enough to receive what is being offered.

The Spleen Meridian supports transformation and distribution. It is associated with converting nourishment into useful energy and helping us determine what should be retained, released, or carried forward.

Together, the Stomach and Spleen meridians offer a beautiful metaphor for emotional wellbeing: What are we taking in? What are we holding? What are we transforming? What are we ready to release?

What Are You Digesting Emotionally?

Emotional digestion may include conversations, relationships, memories, responsibilities, news, expectations, and the unspoken needs of those around us. When too much accumulates without time for reflection, movement, rest, or support, the system can begin to feel overloaded.

This does not mean something is wrong with us. It may simply mean we need space to notice what we have been carrying and decide what still belongs in our lives.

Through the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula, we can begin with a goal or intention, notice what we are feeling, activate supportive resources, and invite community and intuition into the process. Rather than forcing a solution, we create the conditions for greater awareness and choice.

Compassion Without Depletion

Many caring people are skilled at noticing what everyone else needs. They remember appointments, anticipate challenges, prepare meals, offer emotional support, and keep families, workplaces, and communities moving. Yet they may struggle to identify what they need themselves.

The Earth Element encourages a healthier balance between giving and receiving. Compassion does not require us to abandon our own wellbeing. Healthy boundaries, rest, nourishment, and support help ensure that empathy remains a source of connection rather than exhaustion.

You cannot pour from an empty cup. The Earth Element reminds us that nourishing ourselves is not selfish—it is the foundation from which compassion, resilience, and wellbeing naturally grow.

Movement, Posture, and the Earth Element

Our emotional state is often reflected in posture and movement. Worry may draw the body inward. Over-responsibility may appear as tension through the shoulders, neck, jaw, abdomen, or hips. Fatigue may change the way we stand, walk, breathe, and engage with the world.

Simple movement awareness can offer valuable information. Notice how you are sitting. Feel the support beneath your feet. Allow your breath to expand gently. Move your shoulders, turn your head, or stand and walk with curiosity. These small observations can help you reconnect with your body and recognize what support may be needed.

Touch for Health techniques and muscle monitoring can also help identify patterns connected with stress, posture, energy, and emotional experience. The goal is not to diagnose an emotion, but to support the person’s awareness and readiness for change.

Tea with Intentions: Symphony of the Earth

Today’s featured blend from the Cape Breton Tea Company is Symphony of the Earth, thoughtfully selected to support the themes of nourishment, grounding, resilience, and perspective.

Peppermint offers a sense of clarity and gentle movement. Its spiritual essence can support the release of stagnation, helping us shift perspective and allow thoughts and emotions to move rather than becoming fixed.

Hibiscus carries an essence of renewal, courage, and receiving. Its vibrant presence can remind us that support, beauty, and nourishment are available to us—not only through what we give, but through what we allow ourselves to accept.

Together, these herbs create a symbolic invitation to soften, receive, and reconnect with the grounded wisdom of the Earth Element.

Affirmation:

“The Earth Element reaches my soul’s calling. The synergy of this blend gently persuades me to shift perspective and receive nourishment.”

Prepare your tea slowly. Hold the herbs in your right hand, breathe, and bring forward an intention for nourishment, balance, or support. After steeping, hold your cup in your left hand to receive. Sip with awareness and allow the affirmation to become part of the experience.

Reflection Questions

What am I taking in each day?

What am I carrying that no longer belongs to me?

Where am I giving more than I am receiving?

What would true nourishment look like today?

What support could help me feel more grounded?

Understanding the Earth Element is an invitation to bring nourishment, awareness, and grounded compassion into daily life. Small practices—movement, breathing, tea rituals, reflection, rest, and supportive community—can become meaningful parts of a personal wellness toolbox.

Trauma can change the way we experience our bodies, our relationships, our emotions, and the world around us. Yet trauma does not have to become the final definition of who we are.

In this episode of Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell, I welcome award-winning author and self-help expert Faust Ruggiero, M.S. for a compassionate and practical conversation about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, commonly known as PTSD. Drawing from more than forty years of professional experience, Faust helps listeners understand how trauma can affect the body, mind, and emotions at the same time—and why healing requires more than simply trying to forget what happened.

Audio Version

Understanding PTSD as a Whole-Person Experience

PTSD is often described through memories, flashbacks, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm. However, the experience of trauma can also be held through patterns of protection in the nervous system, changes in trust, difficulty feeling safe, emotional disconnection, exhaustion, and a sense of being unable to move forward.

During our conversation, Faust explains that PTSD exists on a spectrum. He introduces five distinct expressions: the normal stress response, acute stress disorder, uncomplicated PTSD, complex PTSD, and comorbid PTSD. This distinction can help people recognize that there is no single way trauma appears and no single path that every person must follow.

Understanding the type and pattern of stress a person is experiencing can create language for what may previously have felt confusing or isolating. It can also open the door to appropriate professional care, supportive relationships, practical tools, and renewed hope.

Faust Ruggiero and The Fix Your PTSD Handbook

Faust is the author of The Fix Yourself Empowerment Series and one of the most frequently interviewed self-help authors in the world. His new book, The Fix Your PTSD Handbook, offers a structured and empowering approach to understanding trauma and reclaiming a greater sense of control.

Rather than presenting healing as a quick or linear process, Faust emphasizes practical steps, compassionate self-understanding, and the importance of connection. For someone who feels isolated, even a small act of reaching toward another person may become the beginning of change.

You can learn more about Faust Ruggiero and his books at www.faustruggiero.com.

A Five Element Perspective on Trauma

In the podcast, I also introduce the Five Element Wheel as one way to notice how trauma may influence the whole person.

Water relates to fear, survival, safety, and our reserves of energy.

Wood relates to direction, movement, frustration, anger, and the ability to move forward.

Fire relates to joy, connection, communication, and the heart.

Earth relates to nourishment, grounding, worry, and the experience of being supported.

Metal relates to grief, breath, release, and letting go.

This perspective does not replace diagnosis, counselling, or medical support. Instead, it can offer another language for self-awareness. When a person notices fear, grief, anger, disconnection, or worry, these experiences can be approached with curiosity rather than judgment.

Returning to the Heart Through Tea and Intention

For this episode, our featured tea is SoulTEA Harbour from the Cape Breton Tea Company. The blend highlights licorice root and stinging nettle, inviting a pause for nourishment, grounding, and presence.

“Balance and Flow is possible when we open to be present for our true heart’s desires. Come home to your heart.”

A tea ritual does not erase trauma. What it can do is create a small, intentional moment in which we slow down, breathe, notice what is present, and offer the body a different experience. These moments of awareness can become part of a wider collection of supportive choices.

Continue with the Emotions & Healing Series

This conversation with Faust is an important part of a broader exploration of emotional wellbeing. The Emotions & Healing Series offers additional conversations and tools for understanding the emotional wisdom of the body, the Five Elements, and the ways awareness can support meaningful change.

For those navigating trauma, anxiety, grief, emotional overwhelm, or patterns of protection, the series can provide a supportive next step. Each episode offers another perspective, allowing listeners to build a personal toolbox rather than searching for one technique that must do everything.

Support Through Greenwell Center Programs

The programs offered through the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health bring together movement, mindfulness, breath, intention, creative expression, and BioEnergetic Wellness. These approaches are designed to help people increase awareness, explore possibility, and discover practical tools that can be woven into daily life.

Support may begin with something simple: noticing the breath, gently moving the body, setting an intention, sharing in community, or recognizing a small change in how the body responds. The goal is not to force an outcome, but to create conditions in which the person can discover what supports greater balance, connection, and forward movement.

Explore current offerings and resources through the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health.

Artfilled Wellness: Healing in Community

For those who feel drawn to a more immersive experience, the Artfilled Wellness: Cape Breton Island Energy & Arts Immersion Retreat offers an opportunity to explore wellbeing through movement, music, intuitive art, nature, poetry, sound, tea rituals, and community.

The retreat is not about escaping life for a few days. It is about living within experiences that encourage curiosity, belonging, creativity, awareness, and the possibility of seeing yourself differently. For someone who has spent a long time in protection or survival, supportive community and creative engagement may open a gentle doorway toward reconnection.

Healing Is Not a Straight Line

Trauma may create patterns that once helped us survive. Healing invites us to notice when those patterns are no longer serving the future we want to create.

There may be moments of progress, uncertainty, rest, frustration, courage, and renewed connection. The process is personal, and no one should feel pressured to heal according to someone else’s timeline.

PTSD is not your identity. It is an experience your system has carried. With appropriate professional care, compassionate support, practical tools, and opportunities for awareness, new possibilities can emerge.

Listen to the full conversation with Faust Ruggiero on Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell, and continue exploring the resources that help you feel informed, supported, and less alone.

What happens when the fire within us is bright, balanced, and nourishing—and what happens when it begins to flicker, scatter, or burn too intensely?

In Episode 2 of Emotions & Healing, Dr. Michelle Greenwell is joined by Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND, and Denise Cambiotti, HCD, CIH BioEW, for a thoughtful exploration of the Sovereign Fire Element, the Heart and Small Intestine meridians, and the emotional qualities of joy, love, passion, connection, and discernment.

Understanding the Sovereign Fire Element

Within the Five Element Theory, Fire is associated with warmth, connection, enthusiasm, communication, and the ability to experience joy. It influences how we relate to ourselves, to other people, to our purpose, and to life itself.

When Fire is balanced, we may feel present, emotionally connected, clear, inspired, and able to share our warmth without becoming depleted. When Fire has too much or too little energy, we may feel scattered, burned out, emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected, or unable to find pleasure in the activities and relationships that once nourished us.

This conversation invites us to notice where our inner fire feels strong, where it may need tending, and where we may be burning through our energy rather than allowing joy to sustain us.

Audio Version

The Heart: Connection, Rhythm, Memory, and Joy

The Heart is often described as the sovereign of the body. It supports circulation and rhythm while also influencing emotional connection, memory, focus, sleep, and our sense of meaning.

Through the BioEnergetic Wellness lens, Heart balance is not simply about reducing stress. It is also about asking whether we are connected to the people, activities, and possibilities that make life meaningful. Are we allowing ourselves to receive joy? Are we sharing our passion in a sustainable way? Are we present enough to recognize what nourishes us?

The Small Intestine: The Wisdom of Discernment

The Small Intestine physically separates what can nourish the body from what needs to be released. Emotionally, it offers a similar lesson in discernment.

What information supports us? What expectations overwhelm us? What belongs to us, and what are we carrying for someone else? When we are emotionally overloaded, it can become difficult to sort truth from fear, nourishment from excess, or meaningful action from constant activity.

As Kate and Denise share throughout this episode, restoring balance can support clearer thinking, healthier boundaries, more efficient movement, and a renewed ability to recognize what truly matters.

Meet Our Guests

Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND

Kate Montgomery began her healthcare career as a Respiratory Therapist before expanding her work as a Holistic Health Practitioner, Certified Sports Massage Therapist, Naturopathic Doctor, BioEnergetic Wellness Professional, and author. Her broad experience allows her to bridge Western medical understanding with holistic, intuitive, and movement-based approaches to wellness.

Kate has worked extensively with athletes, performers, musicians, and individuals navigating demanding life transitions. She has supported people experiencing performance anxiety, stage fright, burnout, memory freezing, emotional distress, imposter syndrome, and changes in identity following retirement from sport or performance. Her work demonstrates how hydration, breath, nervous-system regulation, movement, neurolymphatic support, and emotional balance can influence confidence, recovery, and peak performance.

Denise Cambiotti, HCD, CIH BioEW

Denise Cambiotti has been involved in Touch for Health for several decades and is the founder of Muscle Tuners International. Her work brings together muscle monitoring, movement education, meridian knowledge, nervous-system regulation, and practical BioEnergetic Wellness strategies for professionals and members of the public.

Her advanced studies include the Stress Indicator Point System developed by Ian Stubbings and the earlier work of Richard Utt, as well as Life Enhancement Acupressure Protocols developed by Dr. Charles Krebs. Denise has collaborated with physiotherapists, recreational therapists, massage therapists, bodyworkers, and movement specialists, helping to bridge physical technique with emotional regulation and whole-person wellbeing.

One of Denise’s greatest gifts is helping people recognize that emotions are not problems or personal failures. They are valuable indicators that can guide us toward simple actions, greater awareness, and restored balance.

Tea with Intentions: Apple Passion

Before beginning this conversation, we pause for a Tea with Intentions ritual. The featured blend is Apple Passion from the Cape Breton Tea Company, selected to support the warmth, connection, and heart-centred qualities of the Fire Element.

The Spiritual Essence of the Herbs

Cinnamon offers the spark of life and courage. Its warming nature invites circulation, presence, and purposeful passion rather than scattered effort.

Cloves symbolize emotional protection, integrity, and inner strength. They remind us that we can remain connected to others without exhausting our own reserves.

Vanilla pieces bring harmony and sweetness to the blend. Vanilla invites us to remember that joy does not need to be earned through overwork or exhaustion. Joy can also be received.

“I embrace the opportunities that I have been given and allow them to bring joy to my life.”

As you prepare your own cup, allow the warmth to settle into your chest, breath, and nervous system. Consider where joy already exists in your life and where you may be ready to welcome more of it.

What You Will Discover in This Episode

During this conversation, Kate, Denise, and Michelle explore how the Fire Element can influence posture, movement, digestion, memory, sleep, relationships, and emotional wellbeing. They discuss what can happen when people have tremendous passion but continually overextend themselves, as well as what may occur when the inner fire becomes depleted and motivation begins to disappear.

You will also hear practical insights about movement, meridian tracing, emotional awareness, and simple Touch for Health tools that can support harmony between the Heart and Small Intestine during emotionally demanding periods.

The goal is not to suppress emotion or force ourselves to feel joyful. It is to understand what the body is communicating and to create the conditions in which balance, connection, and vitality can return.

Continue Your Wellness Journey

If this conversation inspires you to understand your movement, posture, body cues, and emotional patterns more deeply, explore the Movement Mastery Program under the Wellness Training tab on the Greenwell Center website. The program offers practical opportunities to develop awareness, recognize how the body organizes movement, and build skills that support confidence, resilience, and lifelong wellbeing.

You are also invited to experience these ideas through the Artfilled Wellness Retreat, where movement, music, intuitive art, nature, Tai Chi, sound, Tea with Intentions, and the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula come together in an immersive Cape Breton experience. The retreat provides space to live within the tools, discover new possibilities, and experience the support of community.

Continue following the Emotions & Healing series as we journey through the Five Elements and discover how emotions can become guides for greater awareness, balance, and wellbeing.

Joy is not an indulgence. It is nourishment. When we learn to tend the fire within, we create the warmth, clarity, and connection needed to live well.

What happens when you intentionally create space for your future before it arrives? Discover why the Artfilled Wellness Retreat on Cape Breton Island is more than a retreat—it is an invitation to experience your next chapter through movement, music, nature, creativity, community, and possibility.

One phrase has quietly become the heartbeat of everything I create:

The future must always have a place in the room.

It reminds me that healing is not simply about where we have been. It is not only about understanding our stories or releasing what no longer serves us. True transformation begins when we create space for who we are becoming.

That is exactly what the Artfilled Wellness Retreat is designed to do.

This retreat is not about escaping your everyday life. It is about returning home with a renewed relationship to it.

Over eight unforgettable days on the beautiful west coast of Cape Breton Island, every experience has been intentionally woven together to help you reconnect with yourself through movement, creativity, nature, music, conversation, community, and the remarkable wisdom already living within you.

More Than a Schedule

People often ask me what makes this retreat different.

The answer is simple.

Every activity has a purpose.

Every location has been chosen with intention.

Every facilitator brings a unique gift.

Every conversation becomes part of a much larger story.

While I have shared the incredible expertise of our guest facilitators in previous blogs, I wanted to share something a little more personal today—the invisible thread that connects everything together.

That thread is the journey.

Creating Space for Discovery

For many years I have studied how movement, energy, intention, music, touch, tea, creativity, and human connection influence our ability to flourish.

These discoveries eventually became the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula—a framework that helps people move from simply managing life to intentionally creating it.

Throughout the retreat you will notice this philosophy woven naturally into each day.

We begin with intention.

We cultivate awareness.

We invite curiosity.

We activate new possibilities.

We build community.

And we leave space for intuition to emerge.

None of this is rushed.

Nothing is forced.

Instead, each experience gently prepares you for the next. Just as nature unfolds one season at a time, transformation also unfolds one experience at a time.

Cape Breton Becomes One of the Teachers

One of the greatest gifts I can offer is not found inside a classroom.

It is Cape Breton itself.

We will gather at local markets where conversations happen as naturally as the ocean breeze. We will wander beaches searching for sea glass while discovering unexpected treasures within ourselves. We will enjoy meals prepared by local restaurants and farmers who understand what it means to nourish both body and community.

We will visit artists whose studios remind us that creativity is not something reserved for a select few—it belongs to every one of us.

We will dance.

We will breathe.

We will laugh.

We will sit quietly beside the ocean.

We will experience the warmth that people here simply call the Cape Breton way.

This island has a rhythm all its own. When you slow down enough to hear it, something inside begins to remember its own rhythm too.

The Small Moments Become the Big Ones

Sometimes transformation arrives through profound insight.

Sometimes it arrives while sharing tea with a new friend.

Sometimes it comes through a brushstroke on a canvas.

Or a piece of music.

Or noticing your shoulders have finally relaxed.

Or realizing you laughed more today than you have in months.

These are the moments I love watching unfold.

As a facilitator, I do not believe my role is to tell you who you should become. My role is to create the conditions where your own wisdom has room to emerge.

That is why the future always has a place in the room.

Because I am far more interested in where you are going than where you have been.

What Will You Discover?

You may discover new ways to calm your nervous system.

You may experience movement that feels joyful instead of demanding.

You may uncover creative abilities you forgot you had.

You may build friendships that continue long after the retreat ends.

You may find language for dreams you have never spoken aloud.

Or perhaps you will simply rediscover the person you have always been beneath the busyness of everyday life.

Every participant’s journey will be different.

That is exactly as it should be.

Come As You Are

You do not need to be an artist.

You do not need to be a musician.

You do not need to be experienced in Tai Chi, meditation, painting, journaling, or energy work.

You only need curiosity.

Everything else unfolds from there.

Whether you are seeking renewal, healing, inspiration, or simply time to breathe, this retreat has been thoughtfully designed to meet you exactly where you are—and gently support where you want to go next.

The Future Is Waiting

One of my favourite questions to ask is:

If everything became possible, what would you be doing next?

That question changes everything.

It shifts our attention from limitation to possibility. It opens doors we did not know existed. It reminds us that the future deserves our attention just as much as our past.

So, if you have been waiting for the right time to reconnect with yourself, perhaps this is your invitation.

Come walk the beaches.

Create alongside remarkable people.

Experience the beauty of Cape Breton.

Share tea.

Move.

Laugh.

Rest.

Discover.

And together, let us make sure the future always has a place in the room.

Have you ever wondered why two people can experience the same stressful event yet respond in completely different ways?

One person develops digestive discomfort. Another experiences headaches. Someone else becomes anxious, loses sleep, or feels emotionally overwhelmed.

What if none of these reactions were random?

What if your emotions were communicating valuable information about your body’s energetic balance?

That is the question we begin exploring in the first episode of our new Emotions & Healing podcast series.

Together with Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND, and Denise Cambiotti, HCD, CIH BioEW, we begin a seven-part journey into one of the most elegant systems of understanding health—the Five Element Theory.

Rather than asking, “What’s wrong with me?”, we begin asking a more empowering question:

“What is my body trying to share with me?”

Audio Version

Why Begin with the Foundation?

Before exploring fear, joy, grief, anger, or compassion individually, we felt it was important to understand how emotions are organized within the body.

The Five Element Theory has been guiding wellness practitioners for thousands of years. It recognizes that every organ system contributes not only to physical health, but also to emotional wellbeing, resilience, decision-making, relationships, and personal growth.

Each element represents a different aspect of our human experience.

Together they create an elegant system of balance.

When one element becomes depleted or overwhelmed, the others respond, continually working to restore harmony.

Understanding this relationship allows us to recognize emotional patterns long before they become chronic stress or physical discomfort.

The Central and Governing Vessels: Your Body’s Master Communicators

Our first episode begins with two extraordinary meridians that influence every other energy pathway within the body.

The Central Vessel (Conception Vessel) travels along the front of the body and is often associated with nurturing, grounding, emotional safety, and our ability to receive support.

The Governing Vessel travels along the spine and over the head, influencing the brain, spinal cord, posture, awareness, and our ability to move confidently through life.

Together these two extraordinary pathways help coordinate communication throughout the body’s energetic system.

When they are balanced, we often experience greater emotional stability, clearer thinking, improved posture, and a greater sense of connection between mind and body.

In this episode we also introduce two important concepts from the Five Element Theory:

The Shen Cycle, the nurturing cycle that supports growth and restoration.

The Ko Cycle, the regulating cycle that prevents any one element from becoming dominant or depleted.

These cycles remind us that emotional balance is dynamic. Just as nature continually adjusts through the changing seasons, our bodies are continually adapting in response to our experiences.

Emotions Are Messages, Not Mistakes

One of the most powerful ideas we discuss is that emotions are not something to fear or suppress.

They are intelligent messages.

Fear may be asking us to slow down.

Frustration may reveal that something needs to change.

Grief may be making space for new possibilities.

Joy reminds us of what nourishes our spirit.

When we begin listening with curiosity instead of judgment, emotions become guides rather than obstacles.

This shift in perspective lies at the heart of both the Five Element Theory and the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula.

Awareness becomes the first step toward lasting change.

Meet Our Guests

Kate Montgomery, HHP, ND

Kate Montgomery brings a remarkable blend of clinical knowledge and holistic wisdom to every conversation.

Beginning her healthcare career as a Respiratory Therapist before becoming a Holistic Health Practitioner, Certified Sports Massage Therapist, Naturopathic Doctor, and BioEnergetic Wellness Professional, Kate has spent decades helping people understand the relationship between physical performance, emotional resilience, and whole-person wellness.

Her work with elite athletes, performing artists, musicians, and individuals navigating life transitions has shown repeatedly that emotional balance is essential for confidence, recovery, clear thinking, and optimal performance.

Kate has a unique ability to bridge traditional healthcare with practical, compassionate wellness strategies that listeners can immediately begin using in everyday life.

Denise Cambiotti, HCD, CIH BioEW

Denise Cambiotti has dedicated decades to helping people understand how movement, muscles, meridians, and emotions work together to create health.

As founder of Muscle Tuners International and an internationally respected educator in Touch for Health and BioEnergetic Wellness, Denise has trained practitioners around the world in practical techniques that restore balance through muscle monitoring, movement education, and meridian balancing.

Her extensive studies in Stress Indicator Point System (SIPS), Life Enhancement Acupressure Protocols (LEAP), and Touch for Health have allowed her to develop an extraordinary understanding of how emotional patterns influence posture, nervous system regulation, and overall wellbeing.

One of Denise’s greatest gifts is making complex concepts simple, practical, and empowering for people of every background.

Together, Kate and Denise create conversations that are rich in knowledge while remaining warm, encouraging, and accessible.

Tea with Intentions

Every episode in our series begins with one of my favourite wellness rituals—sharing a cup of tea with intention.

For this foundational conversation we chose Awesome Island Passion from the Cape Breton Tea Company.

This beautiful blend supports both the Central Vessel and Governing Vessel, creating an energetic invitation to establish balance before we begin learning.

Two herbs beautifully represent the intention of today’s episode.

Lemon Balm gently calms the nervous system while encouraging emotional clarity and harmony between the heart and mind. It reminds us that healing often begins by quieting mental chatter and allowing ourselves to become present.

Strawberry Leaf offers grounding, nourishment, and emotional stability. Spiritually, it encourages us to trust ourselves, receive support, and reconnect with the simple wisdom that already lives within us.

Our affirmation for today’s tea is:

“The bounty of summer sunshine grounds us year-round.”

As you prepare your own cup of tea while listening, we invite you to pause, breathe deeply, and allow yourself to simply become curious about what your emotions may be teaching you today.

Begin Your Journey

This first episode lays the foundation for everything that follows.

Over the coming weeks we will explore each of the Five Elements in greater depth, discovering practical tools that support emotional balance through movement, breath, awareness, muscle monitoring, Touch for Health, and the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula.

Each conversation is designed to help you build a practical wellness toolbox that can support you for years to come.

Continue the Experience

If this conversation inspires you to learn more, we invite you to continue your wellness journey with us.

Join us this August for the Artfilled Wellness Retreat, where movement, music, intuitive art, nature, Tai Chi, sound, Tea with Intentions, and the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula come together in an immersive experience designed to awaken creativity, restore balance, and deepen your connection with yourself and others.
Perhaps you want to learn more about movement and wellness. Denise and Michelle have just released the Movement Mastery Program Module 1, which explores the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula and its support for empowering healing modalities. This program is for people interested in learning more, those looking to add CEU credits, or those who want to strengthen their academic studies by exploring advanced skill-building.

Healing begins with awareness.

Awareness inspires intention.

Intention leads to action.

Action practiced consistently becomes resilience, balance, and a lifetime of living well.

We invite you to listen, learn, share, and join us as we continue exploring the remarkable relationship between emotions, movement, energy, and wellbeing through the Emotions & Healing podcast series.

What if a wellness retreat wasn't simply a collection of activities, but an intentional journey where movement, music, nature, art, tea, storytelling, and community worked together to cultivate lasting wellbeing? Discover how the Artfilled Wellness Model creates a living ecology of care that participants experience—not just attend—over eight transformative days in Cape Breton.

“Health is not built through one extraordinary moment. It is cultivated through a series of intentional experiences that gently reconnect us to ourselves, to one another, and to the world around us.”

When people first hear about the Artfilled Wellness Retreat, they often ask a practical question.

“What are we doing each day?”

It’s a natural question.

But perhaps the more important question is:

“Why is each day designed the way it is?”

The answer is simple.

Every experience has been intentionally chosen.

Nothing is random.

Nothing is included simply because it is enjoyable.

Every activity contributes to a living model of whole-person wellbeing.

Rather than offering a collection of wellness activities, the Artfilled Wellness Retreat invites participants into what we now call the Artfilled Wellness Model—an integrative approach where movement, music, nature, art, storytelling, reflection, photography, sound, tea, and community work together to create conditions where wellbeing can naturally emerge.

Beginning Each Day with Intention

Every day begins long before movement.

It begins with purpose.

Through the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula, participants are invited to identify an intention for their day. Not a problem to solve, but a possibility to grow toward.

Goal.

Intention.

Awareness.

Activation.

Community.

Intuition.

These six principles quietly organize everything that follows.

Rather than chasing wellness, participants begin practicing it.

A Cup of Tea Becomes the First Creative Experience

Tea is often thought of as hospitality.

For us, it is much more.

Each carefully selected blend introduces the spiritual essence of the herbs and an affirmation that gently frames the day’s exploration.

The tea becomes a pause.

A ritual.

A reminder that healing begins with the smallest acts of presence.

Every sip becomes an invitation to embody the qualities we hope to cultivate throughout the day.

Nature Becomes Our First Teacher

Before movement begins, we reconnect with the natural world.

Through Tanya Levy’s remarkable photography, participants are invited to notice relationships rather than simply observe scenery.

A pathway.

A bird.

A wave.

A heart-shaped stone.

A shaft of light through the trees.

Nature reminds us that we already belong.

Rather than escaping into nature, we remember that we are part of it.

Music Creates an Envelope of Care

Before our bodies begin moving, our nervous systems begin listening.

Participants discover why particular musical notes, keys, and frequencies have been chosen.

Our musicians don’t simply perform.

They participate.

Their music becomes part of a shared conversation that unfolds throughout the session.

The room slowly becomes an envelope of care, where sound, silence, and intention prepare everyone for the experience ahead.

Movement Becomes a Daily Practice for Living

Movement is never about perfect technique.

It is about relationship.

Participants explore Tai Chi, embodied movement, and BioEnergetic Wellness practices that can be carried into everyday life.

The goal isn’t to master choreography.

The goal is to develop lifelong skills for self-care, resilience, balance, and vitality.

Together We Care

Perhaps the most transformative part of the retreat isn’t found in any single activity.

It is found in the community itself.

Each participant arrives carrying their own story.

Their own hopes.

Their own challenges.

Within the group, those experiences are witnessed rather than judged.

Shared rather than hidden.

Supported rather than carried alone.

Something remarkable begins to happen.

The group itself becomes part of the healing process.

As one person discovers insight, everyone learns.

As one person finds courage, others feel permission.

As one person moves through challenge, the entire community becomes stronger.

Together, we care.

Art Captures What Words Cannot

While participants move, reflect, and connect, intuitive artist Marian Egan paints.

Her paintings are not illustrations prepared in advance.

They emerge in response to everything unfolding throughout the day—the conversations, the music, the movement, the emotional atmosphere, and the shared energy of the group.

Each completed painting becomes a visual expression of the collective experience.

Accompanied by its unique frequency number, it offers participants an enduring reminder of the day’s discoveries long after they return home.

Eight Days That Become One Experience

Although each day has its own focus, the retreat is not eight separate workshops.

It is one unfolding journey.

Like chapters in a meaningful story, each experience prepares participants for the next.

Awareness deepens.

Relationships strengthen.

Confidence grows.

Creativity expands.

By the final day, participants often discover that they are not simply leaving with memories.

They are leaving with practices, relationships, perspectives, and daily rituals that continue supporting their wellbeing long after the retreat has ended.

This Is What We Mean by Artfilled Wellness

Artfilled Wellness is more than an event.

It is more than a retreat.

It is a way of living.

It is an invitation to experience how movement, music, nature, creativity, reflection, and community can work together—not as separate activities, but as a living ecology that supports human flourishing.

Over eight remarkable days on the beautiful landscapes of Cape Breton Island, you won’t simply attend workshops.

You will live the Artfilled Wellness Model.

And perhaps, along the way, discover a new relationship with yourself.

Closing Invitation

If you’ve been searching for more than another wellness retreat—if you’re longing for an experience that nourishes your body, inspires your creativity, reconnects you with nature, and reminds you that healing is something we cultivate together—we invite you to join us.

Come to Cape Breton Island.

Bring your story.

Leave with new practices, meaningful friendships, and a deeper understanding of what it means to flourish.

Artfilled Wellness is not simply something you attend.

Spring invites us back into the garden.

There is soil to turn, grass to rake, seedlings to plant, pathways to clear, and flower beds ready to awaken with colour. For many of us, gardening is one of the great joys of the season—a meaningful way to move, create, nourish, and connect with the land.

It is also one of the most physically demanding activities many people take on in spring.

Hours spent bending, lifting, twisting, reaching, pushing, pulling, and kneeling can quickly turn a joyful day in the garden into sore muscles, strained joints, and deep fatigue. Often, it is not the gardening itself that causes discomfort—it is how we move while doing it.

This is where Tai Chi becomes one of the most practical tools we can bring outdoors.

At the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health, we often speak about Tai Chi as movement for life. The garden is one of the clearest examples of this principle in action. Tai Chi is not separate from gardening. It is one of the most effective ways to prepare for it, move through it with greater ease, and recover from it more fully.

Tai Chi Before the Garden: Prepare the Whole Body

Before stepping into the garden, a few minutes of Tai Chi can help organize the body for more efficient movement.

Rather than beginning with isolated effort—using only the back, shoulders, or knees—Tai Chi helps integrate the whole body so movement becomes coordinated, supported, and efficient.

This is one of Tai Chi’s greatest strengths: it teaches the body to distribute effort well.

A short pre-gardening Tai Chi practice helps:

warm the joints gently

awaken postural alignment

connect breath to movement

engage the legs and core for support

improve balance and stability

prepare the shoulders, spine, hips, and knees for integrated movement

This reduces the tendency to overwork one area of the body while underusing the rest.

Before lifting, reaching, bending, or pushing, Tai Chi reminds the body how to move as one connected system.

Don Yu in the Garden: Bend, Reach, and Gather with Ease

One of the most useful Tai Chi movement patterns in the garden is Don Yu.

Don Yu teaches coordinated bending through the hips and knees while maintaining support through the spine and core. It is one of the most functional movement patterns for gardening because it helps us lower, reach, gather, and return upright without collapsing into the low back.

In the garden, Don Yu supports:

bending to weed

reaching into flower beds

planting seedlings

gathering clippings

picking up tools

lowering to the earth with more control

rising again with greater ease

Rather than folding from the waist and straining the back, Don Yu teaches the body to bend with support, using the legs and center to carry the work.

It transforms bending from a strain into a coordinated whole-body action.

Tor Yu in the Garden: Push, Pull, and Flow

Another essential Tai Chi movement pattern for garden work is Tor Yu.

Tor Yu teaches rotational movement through the waist and torso, allowing force to move through the center rather than isolating effort in the arms and shoulders.

This is especially useful in repetitive garden tasks such as:

pushing a lawn mower

raking leaves or soil

sweeping pathways

turning compost

moving mulch

pushing a wheelbarrow

Tor Yu reminds us that power comes from coordinated rotation, not muscular force alone.

Instead of pushing with the shoulders and tightening the neck, the body learns to move from the center, allowing the arms to transmit force rather than generate it independently.

This creates more flow, less tension, and far less fatigue.

Garden Smarter: Pace the Work

One of the greatest challenges in spring gardening is not motivation—it is restraint.

When the weather shifts and the garden calls, it is easy to overdo it. We want to clear the beds, plant the seeds, trim the edges, haul the mulch, and finish everything in one ambitious burst.

But pushing past our available energy often comes at a cost.

The body compensates.
Movement becomes effortful.
Muscles tighten.
Breath shortens.
Joints brace.
The spirit pushes harder than the body can comfortably sustain.

This is when gardening becomes exhausting rather than restorative.

Tai Chi teaches a different approach.

Pacing is not slowing down because we are weak.
Pacing is moving with enough awareness to preserve strength.

When we pace ourselves:

breath stays steady

posture stays organized

effort remains distributed

tension does not accumulate as quickly

the body stays responsive instead of braced

energy lasts longer

The goal is not simply to finish the task.
The goal is to finish well.

When movement is paced with softness and coordination, the body can work longer, recover faster, and remain in better relationship with the task.

Hydration, Vitality, and the Garden Rhythm

Outdoor work asks more of the body than we often realize.

Sun, movement, perspiration, and focused effort all increase the need for hydration and mineral support. Drinking water throughout the day is one of the simplest and most important ways to support energy, circulation, muscle function, and recovery.

And when the body has been working steadily outdoors, replacing electrolytes becomes just as important.

A wonderful traditional option is Switchel—a refreshing blend often used to restore hydration and vitality after physical work. Switchel supports replenishment while offering a simple, nourishing alternative to sugary sports drinks.

You can find a Switchel recipe in the recipes section and it can be customized beautifully with herbal teas to add flavour, minerals, and vitality to each sip.

A well-made Switchel can become part of the garden ritual:
hydrate,
restore,
return.

Tai Chi After the Garden: Restore Whole-Body Integration

After time in the garden, the body benefits just as much from Tai Chi as it did before.

Gardening often creates repetitive movement patterns:
bending,
reaching,
gripping,
twisting,
pushing,
pulling.

Even when done well, repetition can accumulate tension in the hands, forearms, hips, shoulders, and lower back.

A short post-garden Tai Chi sequence helps release those patterns and return the body to integrated movement.

This is one of the most important and overlooked uses of Tai Chi in daily life.

After gardening, Tai Chi can help:

release repetitive strain

reset posture

restore spinal mobility

open the breath

relax overworked joints

redistribute muscular effort

bring the body back to coordinated ease

Rather than carrying the strain of the garden into the evening—or into the next day—the body is given a chance to reset.

This is how Tai Chi helps us recover while we are still moving.

Garden Well, Recover Well

Tai Chi reminds us that the garden is not only a place to work.

It is a place to practice.

A place to move with awareness.
A place to strengthen without strain.
A place to cultivate energy instead of depleting it.
A place to remember that how we move matters.

Before the garden, Tai Chi prepares the body.
In the garden, Tai Chi improves the work.
After the garden, Tai Chi restores the whole system.

Move well.
Hydrate often.
Pace gently.
Breathe deeply.

And let the garden become one more place where Tai Chi supports the art of living well.
