Nova Scotia Healthcare should set the example for Canada. The front end programs include arts, tourism, culture, and rural community support. The province has a chance to change the narrative around healthcare and self-care if the model puts the front end health applications as the priority, not to the discard pile. Waiting to spend budget money on the end result of disease is reactive, crisis driven, and too late. We have to be smarter, and Nova Scotians pride themselves on realizing old models can be upgraded not eliminated.

The post Rethinking Healthcare: What If the Arts, Tourism, and Culture Are Part of the Prescription? first appeared on Greenwell Center for Holistic Health.

What if healthcare isn’t only what happens inside hospital walls?

What if the future of healthcare in Nova Scotia depends just as much on choirs, movement classes, storytelling circles, and cultural gathering spaces as it does on surgical suites and emergency rooms?

Across our province, conversations about healthcare often focus on hospital beds, physician shortages, and expanding acute care services. These are important. They save lives. But they are also reactive systems — responding once illness has already progressed.

At the Greenwell Center, we invite a different question:

What reduces the need for hospitalization in the first place?

The Biology of Belonging

Chronic stress, isolation, and nervous system dysregulation are among the strongest predictors of declining health. They contribute to heart disease, anxiety, depression, immune dysfunction, cognitive decline, and chronic inflammation.

These are not abstract ideas — they are measurable physiological responses.

The World Health Organization has documented the role of arts participation in improving mental and physical health outcomes, including reductions in anxiety and depression, improvements in cognitive resilience, and strengthened social cohesion.

When people sing together, breath deepens and vagal tone improves.
When people practice Tai Chi and Yoga, balance, coordination, and heart coherence strengthen.
When communities gather in storytelling and creative expression, isolation decreases and belonging increases.

These are preventative health interventions.

The Role of Arts, Tourism, and Culture in Healthcare

In rural communities especially, tourism centres and cultural spaces have long served as more than information booths. They are gathering points. They are hubs of local knowledge. They are bridges between visitors and the lived experience of place. They are the knowledge of the people and the hidden opportunities happening that day, and experiences which our tourists seek by coming to our province and to Cape Breton Island in particular.

If tourism shifts online to outdated platforms that can’t respond the every day details, we face an opportunity. What if tourism was considered through a wellness eye, with the focus on breaks for travelers seeking local knowledge, a break from the travels, and an innovative wellness opportunity to change their experience of what culture provides in our communities.

What if these spaces evolve into Community Wellness and Arts Hubs? The Judique Interpretive Centre is a perfect example, along with the Chestico Museum, and An Drochaid in Mabou, as they inspire music, dance, culture and historical value to the tourist experience.

Instead of distributing brochures, they could continue to offer and advance programming from a wellness lens for travelers and locals:

Movement practices at sunrise

Sound immersion evenings

Storytelling gatherings

Intergenerational creative workshops

Cultural experiences rooted in nervous system regulation

Tourism becomes experiential wellness.
Culture becomes preventative healthcare.
Community becomes infrastructure.

Healthcare does not begin in the emergency room.
It begins in the body — and in relationship.

Tai Chi as a Wellness Plan

On April 25th, we will join the global celebration of World Tai Chi and Qigong Day — a day dedicated to highlighting Tai Chi and Qigong as accessible, evidence-informed wellness practices. Tai Chi Cape Breton has celebrated this day with special programming and gathering for over a decade. The program has now also expanded to highlight healthcare initiatives around the world. You can find them here.

Tai Chi is not simply gentle exercise.

It is:

Nervous system training

Balance and fall-prevention support

Breath and cardiovascular regulation

Emotional centering

Community connection

As part of our ongoing commitment to preventative wellness, the Greenwell Center will be offering Tai Chi workshops in May, expanding opportunities for participants to experience this practice as a sustainable health strategy. Stay tuned for the full schedule.

Tai Chi teaches us that strength can be cultivated through softness.
Healthcare systems could learn from this wisdom.

The Healing Power of Sound

Sound is one of the fastest ways to influence the nervous system. Rhythm, vibration, and tone shift brainwave patterns and help the body move from stress response into regulation.

Our current Sound Workshops explore how intentional listening and vibration support emotional release, mental clarity, and physiological coherence. Our online Symphony of Radiance NeuroArts Wellness program offers a complete immersion into the power of sound, movement, art, poetry, writing, photography, and more.

Sound reminds us that healing is not always something we “do.”
Sometimes it is something we receive.

On Cape Breton Island, we have a rich heritage in music and dance, sound is central to how we live in our communities. From our tourism standpoint, we highlight the power of this culture through our museum programs, our community hall events, and our town celebrations throughout the year.

Artfilled Wellness Retreat – August

This August, the Greenwell Center will host the Artfilled Wellness Retreat, a deep exploration into the intersection of nervous system science, creative expression, and embodied awareness.

Participants will explore:

NeuroArts and brain-body integration

Expressive arts for emotional resilience

Movement for regulation and renewal

Creative processes that support transformation

The retreat is built on a simple yet powerful truth:

Creativity is not extracurricular.
It is regulatory.

In times of uncertainty and structural change, we need spaces where people can recalibrate — physically, emotionally, and socially.

A New Structure of Healthcare

If we continue to define healthcare only by hospitals and medical procedures, we will always be responding to crisis.

But if we broaden our definition to include:

Arts participation

Movement practices

Cultural gathering

Sound and storytelling

Intergenerational connection

We begin to build a preventative model rooted in community resilience.

This is not about replacing hospitals.
It is about reducing the strain placed upon them.

The arts are not a luxury.
They are a pathway to regulated nervous systems, connected communities, and sustainable health.

At the Greenwell Center, we believe the future of healthcare includes culture, creativity, and embodied practice — not as add-ons, but as foundational elements.

We invite you to rethink what healthcare means.
We invite you to participate.
We invite you to experience wellness as something we create together.

There are stories we consciously tell ourselves — and then there are the quieter ones.

The ones held in our posture. The ones whispered through tension, breath, and sensation. The ones that shape how we see ourselves, how we interpret life, and how we move forward.

As we enter a new season, many of us feel the pull to reflect, reset, and realign. Yet true change rarely comes from force or fixing. It arises from awareness — from learning how to listen beneath the surface and giving ourselves permission to soften long‑held patterns.

This February 25th at 4 pm Atlantic, we are offering a new 90‑minute experiential workshop designed to do exactly that.

Where Body Awareness Meets Conscious Reflection

The Stories We Tell Ourselves is a live, online experiential workshop that gently explores the relationship between posture, inner narrative, energy, and conscious journaling. It is an invitation to slow down, listen inwardly, and reconnect with the wisdom already present within the body.

The stories we tell ourselves are not only mental constructs. They are shaped by lived experiences, emotional responses, and the ways our nervous system has learned to protect us. Over time, these stories become embodied — expressed through posture, movement habits, breath patterns, and energetic holding.

By bringing awareness to the body and offering intentional journaling prompts, we create a bridge between sensation and insight, between what we feel and how we interpret it.

Why Journaling With the Right Focus Matters

Journaling can be a powerful tool for mental health, clarity, and integration — but only when it is approached with the right intention.

This workshop does not use journaling as analysis or problem‑solving. Instead, it offers guided, compassionate prompts that:

Support emotional regulation and nervous system ease

Encourage curiosity rather than judgment

Create space for insight without forcing outcomes

Help participants notice and gently re‑author inner narratives

When journaling is paired with body awareness and gentle movement, it becomes a form of listening rather than doing. This combination allows new perspectives to emerge naturally — often revealing what we are ready to release, rewrite, or carry forward with greater harmony.

Register Here

An Experiential Journey of Awareness and Choice

During this 90‑minute experience, participants are guided through a carefully held flow that supports both grounding and expansion:

Arriving and grounding practices to create energetic safety and presence

An Inner Smile meditation to harmonize organ systems and open internal space

Posture awareness and gentle movement to notice how stress and belief patterns live in the body

Two guided journaling experiences that invite listening first, then conscious re‑authoring

Group reflection and integration, offering connection without pressure or spotlighting

A Soul‑Aligned Word is also introduced as a subtle companion throughout the workshop — not something to analyze, but something to notice as awareness deepens.

This approach supports participants in reclaiming authorship over their inner experience — not by changing who they are, but by softening the lens through which they see themselves.

Supporting Mental Health Through Embodied Awareness

Mental health is not just about what we think — it is deeply connected to how safe, supported, and present we feel in our bodies.

By integrating breath, posture awareness, movement, and reflective writing, this workshop helps participants:

Feel more grounded and regulated

Increase self‑compassion and emotional awareness

Recognize unconscious stories that influence perception

Develop practical tools for ongoing self‑care

The result is not a dramatic overhaul, but a gentle recalibration — one that supports clarity, resilience, and a renewed sense of choice.

What You’ll Receive

All participants receive:

A live 90‑minute experiential workshop

A posture handout and movement video list

Conscious Insight Journal – Volume 1 (ebook)

A 1‑page Reflection & Integration PDF to support continued journaling

Optional early‑bird add‑ons include a mini or full tea package and a printed journal, allowing tea to become a ritual anchor for reflection and integration in the weeks that follow, and a journal to hold and inspire you for more writing opportunities and insights.

A Space to Listen, Not Fix

This workshop is not about forcing change or fixing what feels uncomfortable.

It is about:

Listening beneath habitual stories

Softening held tension

Bringing harmony to body, mind, and energy

Choosing what you are ready to carry forward

If you are feeling called to reconnect with your inner voice, support your mental health through embodied awareness, or explore journaling as a compassionate and empowering practice, this experience offers a gentle place to begin.

Awareness is the doorway.
The body holds the wisdom.
The story can change.

As we mark World Mental Health Day 2025, we invite you to pause, reflect, and reconnect—with yourself, your colleagues, and your community.
This year’s theme, “Mental Health in the Workplace,” comes to life through a global collaboration between CanBeWell.org and IASK.org, featuring 12 presenters across three time zones who bring practical, accessible tools to strengthen self-care and connection.

A Global Movement for Everyday Wellness

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, which reached participants around the world, the 2025 program takes wellness into the heart of where we spend much of our time—the workplace.
The newly released World Mental Health Day 2025 Journal, published by Waines Publishing – a division of the Greenwell Center, captures the essence of this initiative. Inside, readers will find affirmations, reflections, and easy-to-use practices drawn from the presentations to help transform daily routines into moments of mindfulness and balance.

From the boardroom to the home office, from leadership teams to front-line staff, the message is simple:

We no longer need to suffer in silence. Together, we engage in self-care throughout the day.

Taking Action: Your Mental Health Plan

Creating change begins with small, consistent actions. Here’s an action plan to begin integrating mental health awareness into your daily rhythm:

Begin your day with intention. Take a deep breath before checking emails. Feel your feet on the floor, and remind yourself that your presence matters. Check out these resources.

Build in mindful pauses. Between tasks or meetings, stretch, sip water, or breathe deeply. Even 30 seconds of awareness can reset your energy. Other tips in the book. Enjoy a few Tai Chi or Yoga moves also.

Connect with others. A kind word, shared tea break, or moment of gratitude can shift the energy of an entire team. Be sure to check out our TEAS with Intentions.

End your day with reflection. Ask: What restored me today? What might I do differently tomorrow?

Affirmations for Workplace Well-Being

Use these affirmations to begin reshaping habits and goals:

I give myself permission to pause and recharge.
Every moment of self-care strengthens my capacity to serve others.
I communicate openly and compassionately with my colleagues.
Wellness is a shared responsibility, and together we thrive.
Balance and peace begin with a single breath.

Tai Chi offers so many life lessons. Most important, patience and compassion. The deep internal spirals support your healing process, and together we can discover more about the body and how it loves to move. Check out this Tai Chi video for the Magnifying Peace Project.

People often ask what creates the space for energy and vitality to keep me going each day, and they cannot believe when I respond…Tai Chi! It seems unbelievable that a slow, gentle movement pattern can do such a big task. Guess again!

Magnifying Peace Project, Video #8, Tai Chi in the woods shares a little of the beauty, tranquility, serenity, connection, and sunshine that can feed your soul, elevate your mood, and bring a bit of chaos into order. For over thirty years I have studied and embodied the gifts of Tai Chi to support my mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. I love to find unique places to do a Tai Chi set and my favourite are in the woods, at the beach, or in my backyard.

As you consider the stress of the weight of the world on your shoulders, how are you supporting your body to release that stress? Do you have a movement plan that keeps you engaging and calming the nervous system? Do you have a group of people you love to gather with and share healing time?

As the volunteer instructor for Tai Chi Cape Breton, it is my distinct pleasure to support classes in Inverness County throughout the week. We enjoy connection, building community, supporting each other’s health challenges, finding relief from pain, sleeping better, lifting our moods, and leaving our practice feeling more peace than we did coming through the door.

Are you looking for something like this to help you feel, move, and live better? Consider our online or in-person classes at the Greenwell Center. And, I, Dr Michelle Greenwell PhD CIH BioEW, would be thrilled to have you join us. If you live in the West Kelowna, BC area, or Summerland, check out the classes for Wine Country Tai Chi Society and watch for the Tai Chi Wellness Retreat in March 2026.

Do you have tools and knowledge ready to go for supporting you, your family, or your friends when you learn about your or their cancer diagnosis? This is a trying time to be learning it all at once.

We have had cancer in our family and amongst our friends and colleagues, and I made it a mission to have as much knowledge, resources, and contacts as possible to be able to respond from preparedness, rather than panic.

Register here for the Cancer Care you want to know about today!

Knowing my desire to be prepared and to have learnt as much as I could about supporting cancer care at all levels for body, mind, and spirit, PLEASE, sign up for this special event.

Unlocking the Power of Healing at the Untangled Natural Cancer Healing Online Summit

Healing is a deeply personal journey, one that extends far beyond the physical realm to encompass the emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of our being. For individuals navigating the complexities of cancer care, the Untangled Healing Cancer Care Summit offers a transformative opportunity to explore cutting-edge insights, connect with a supportive community, and embrace holistic healing strategies.

The Intersection of Science and Holistic Healing

The summit brings together a distinguished panel of speakers, including leading oncologists, integrative medicine practitioners, nutritionists, psychologists, and wellness advocates. By integrating evidence-based research with holistic healing practices, these experts illuminate pathways to resilience and recovery.

Research shows that combining conventional cancer treatments with integrative approaches—such as mindfulness, movement therapies, and nutritional support—can improve quality of life and enhance treatment outcomes. A 2020 study published in Cancer found that patients engaging in mind-body practices experienced reduced fatigue and improved emotional well-being. Similarly, nutritional interventions tailored to individual needs have been linked to better treatment tolerance and immune system support.

Key Takeaways from the Summit’s Speakers

Empowering Emotional Resilience: The summit addresses the emotional toll of cancer, offering tools to manage anxiety, depression, and fear. Studies have shown that mindfulness practices, such as meditation and guided imagery, can significantly lower stress hormones and improve mood, creating a fertile ground for healing.

Optimizing Physical Health: Nutrition experts will discuss the critical role of diet in cancer care. Evidence suggests that anti-inflammatory and nutrient-rich diets can support recovery and reduce the risk of recurrence. Topics like the gut microbiome, plant-based eating, and supplements will be explored.

Harnessing the Mind-Body Connection: Movement therapies, including yoga and Tai Chi, have been proven to enhance physical strength, flexibility, and mental clarity. According to research in Psycho-Oncology, these practices also help regulate cortisol levels and improve sleep patterns.

Fostering Spiritual Connection: Many speakers delve into the transformative power of spirituality and purpose in healing. Spirituality, whether rooted in religion, personal beliefs, or connection to nature, has been associated with greater peace, hope, and coping skills.

Building Community and Support: The summit creates a sense of belonging, fostering connections among attendees who share similar journeys. Studies emphasize the importance of social support in reducing isolation and enhancing emotional resilience.

Dr Michelle Greenwell shares how you can prioritize the knowledge to fit your personal situation or the circumstances for a loved one. When so much valuable information is available, it is nice to know how to navigate the road map for optimum benefit, and less irrelevant details that can fall away. She also shares more of her family story and the tools in Tai Chi and dance that have also supported her. She explores the Pyramid of Health to help you realize where you need to focus your attention most.

Natascha was an original owner of the company, and worked beside Dr Michelle to create special charts, connections with intentions, and ideations with the Western herbs choices for special recipe blends. Another award winner last night was Evelyn Mulders for her work with Whispering Herbs, that sparked and supplied research for the blends created at the Cape Breton Tea Company.
