What inspires you to be better each day with energy and vitality? With Tai Chi, it creates momentum for the kind of movement that builds energy, supports strength, and helps you to calm the mind....how is Tai Chi supporting your outdoor activities?

Spring invites us back into the garden.

There is soil to turn, grass to rake, seedlings to plant, pathways to clear, and flower beds ready to awaken with colour. For many of us, gardening is one of the great joys of the season—a meaningful way to move, create, nourish, and connect with the land.

It is also one of the most physically demanding activities many people take on in spring.

Hours spent bending, lifting, twisting, reaching, pushing, pulling, and kneeling can quickly turn a joyful day in the garden into sore muscles, strained joints, and deep fatigue. Often, it is not the gardening itself that causes discomfort—it is how we move while doing it.

This is where Tai Chi becomes one of the most practical tools we can bring outdoors.

At the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health, we often speak about Tai Chi as movement for life. The garden is one of the clearest examples of this principle in action. Tai Chi is not separate from gardening. It is one of the most effective ways to prepare for it, move through it with greater ease, and recover from it more fully.

Tai Chi Before the Garden: Prepare the Whole Body

Before stepping into the garden, a few minutes of Tai Chi can help organize the body for more efficient movement.

Rather than beginning with isolated effort—using only the back, shoulders, or knees—Tai Chi helps integrate the whole body so movement becomes coordinated, supported, and efficient.

This is one of Tai Chi’s greatest strengths: it teaches the body to distribute effort well.

A short pre-gardening Tai Chi practice helps:

warm the joints gently

awaken postural alignment

connect breath to movement

engage the legs and core for support

improve balance and stability

prepare the shoulders, spine, hips, and knees for integrated movement

This reduces the tendency to overwork one area of the body while underusing the rest.

Before lifting, reaching, bending, or pushing, Tai Chi reminds the body how to move as one connected system.

Don Yu in the Garden: Bend, Reach, and Gather with Ease

One of the most useful Tai Chi movement patterns in the garden is Don Yu.

Don Yu teaches coordinated bending through the hips and knees while maintaining support through the spine and core. It is one of the most functional movement patterns for gardening because it helps us lower, reach, gather, and return upright without collapsing into the low back.

In the garden, Don Yu supports:

bending to weed

reaching into flower beds

planting seedlings

gathering clippings

picking up tools

lowering to the earth with more control

rising again with greater ease

Rather than folding from the waist and straining the back, Don Yu teaches the body to bend with support, using the legs and center to carry the work.

It transforms bending from a strain into a coordinated whole-body action.

Tor Yu in the Garden: Push, Pull, and Flow

Another essential Tai Chi movement pattern for garden work is Tor Yu.

Tor Yu teaches rotational movement through the waist and torso, allowing force to move through the center rather than isolating effort in the arms and shoulders.

This is especially useful in repetitive garden tasks such as:

pushing a lawn mower

raking leaves or soil

sweeping pathways

turning compost

moving mulch

pushing a wheelbarrow

Tor Yu reminds us that power comes from coordinated rotation, not muscular force alone.

Instead of pushing with the shoulders and tightening the neck, the body learns to move from the center, allowing the arms to transmit force rather than generate it independently.

This creates more flow, less tension, and far less fatigue.

Garden Smarter: Pace the Work

One of the greatest challenges in spring gardening is not motivation—it is restraint.

When the weather shifts and the garden calls, it is easy to overdo it. We want to clear the beds, plant the seeds, trim the edges, haul the mulch, and finish everything in one ambitious burst.

But pushing past our available energy often comes at a cost.

The body compensates.
Movement becomes effortful.
Muscles tighten.
Breath shortens.
Joints brace.
The spirit pushes harder than the body can comfortably sustain.

This is when gardening becomes exhausting rather than restorative.

Tai Chi teaches a different approach.

Pacing is not slowing down because we are weak.
Pacing is moving with enough awareness to preserve strength.

When we pace ourselves:

breath stays steady

posture stays organized

effort remains distributed

tension does not accumulate as quickly

the body stays responsive instead of braced

energy lasts longer

The goal is not simply to finish the task.
The goal is to finish well.

When movement is paced with softness and coordination, the body can work longer, recover faster, and remain in better relationship with the task.

Hydration, Vitality, and the Garden Rhythm

Outdoor work asks more of the body than we often realize.

Sun, movement, perspiration, and focused effort all increase the need for hydration and mineral support. Drinking water throughout the day is one of the simplest and most important ways to support energy, circulation, muscle function, and recovery.

And when the body has been working steadily outdoors, replacing electrolytes becomes just as important.

A wonderful traditional option is Switchel—a refreshing blend often used to restore hydration and vitality after physical work. Switchel supports replenishment while offering a simple, nourishing alternative to sugary sports drinks.

You can find a Switchel recipe in the recipes section and it can be customized beautifully with herbal teas to add flavour, minerals, and vitality to each sip.

A well-made Switchel can become part of the garden ritual:
hydrate,
restore,
return.

Tai Chi After the Garden: Restore Whole-Body Integration

After time in the garden, the body benefits just as much from Tai Chi as it did before.

Gardening often creates repetitive movement patterns:
bending,
reaching,
gripping,
twisting,
pushing,
pulling.

Even when done well, repetition can accumulate tension in the hands, forearms, hips, shoulders, and lower back.

A short post-garden Tai Chi sequence helps release those patterns and return the body to integrated movement.

This is one of the most important and overlooked uses of Tai Chi in daily life.

After gardening, Tai Chi can help:

release repetitive strain

reset posture

restore spinal mobility

open the breath

relax overworked joints

redistribute muscular effort

bring the body back to coordinated ease

Rather than carrying the strain of the garden into the evening—or into the next day—the body is given a chance to reset.

This is how Tai Chi helps us recover while we are still moving.

Garden Well, Recover Well

Tai Chi reminds us that the garden is not only a place to work.

It is a place to practice.

A place to move with awareness.
A place to strengthen without strain.
A place to cultivate energy instead of depleting it.
A place to remember that how we move matters.

Before the garden, Tai Chi prepares the body.
In the garden, Tai Chi improves the work.
After the garden, Tai Chi restores the whole system.

Move well.
Hydrate often.
Pace gently.
Breathe deeply.

And let the garden become one more place where Tai Chi supports the art of living well.

They are designed to leave you with practical strategies you can continue using long after the retreat ends.

Meet the Facilitators

Transformation happens when wisdom is shared in safe, supportive spaces.

This retreat brings together an inspiring group of facilitators, each offering unique expertise, lived experience, and heartfelt leadership in their field.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be introducing each facilitator and sharing the special gifts they bring to this immersive experience.

What Transformation Can Look Like

Transformation does not always arrive dramatically.

Sometimes it looks like:

remembering what joy feels like

moving with more confidence

finding words for something you’ve carried silently

feeling inspired to create again

reconnecting with your own intuition

meeting people who remind you that healing happens in community

Transformation is often found in the smallest moments.

At the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health, we often speak about wellness as something we cultivate—through daily rhythm, intentional movement, nourishing environments, and meaningful connection.

Summer offers us a beautiful opportunity to bring that philosophy to life in a very tangible way: by taking our Tai Chi practice outdoors.

Whether in a community garden, by the water, on the grass, or beneath open sky, practicing Tai Chi in nature invites us into a deeper relationship with breath, body, and the living world around us. It is a simple and profound way to support holistic health while helping create the kind of community environment that fosters vitality, belonging, and resilience.

This is how wellness becomes lived experience.

The Outdoor Advantage

Tai Chi is already known as a powerful integrative practice—supporting mobility, breath, balance, nervous system regulation, and mental clarity in one gentle form.

When we step outdoors, these benefits expand.

Nature provides the ideal setting for whole-person wellness. Fresh air encourages fuller breathing. Natural light supports circadian rhythm and energy regulation. Uneven surfaces gently awaken balance and proprioception. The visual and auditory richness of outdoor spaces helps restore attention and calm the nervous system.

Tai Chi and Qigong continue to gain recognition in integrative medicine as practices that support whole-person health because they engage physical movement, emotional regulation, cognitive focus, breath awareness, and social connection simultaneously. Outdoors, these therapeutic effects are amplified by the environment itself.

In many ways, nature becomes a co-facilitator in the practice.

Breathing with the Landscape

One of the most immediate gifts of outdoor Tai Chi is the breath.

Inside, we often breathe in conditioned air while surrounded by enclosed walls and mechanical sound. Outdoors, breath becomes more expansive. The lungs receive fresh, moving air. The body responds to changing temperature, subtle humidity, and natural airflow. Breath becomes less restricted and more relational.

In Tai Chi, breath is not simply a physiological act—it is a conversation with life.

Outdoors, that conversation becomes more vivid.

As we inhale, we receive the vitality of the environment.
As we exhale, we soften into it.

Breathing with the breeze, the scent of soil, the moisture near water, or the warmth of morning sunlight creates a richer sensory and energetic experience. Breath becomes nourishment.

Awakening the Senses

Indoor environments often dull the senses.

Artificial lighting, mechanical noise, flat flooring, and repetitive visual surroundings can reduce sensory engagement and contribute to nervous system fatigue. Even when we are not consciously aware of it, the body is still processing the hum of ventilation, traffic, appliances, and screen exposure.

Nature restores what modern environments often diminish.

Practicing outdoors gently reawakens the senses:

the sound of birds and wind sharpens listening

the scent of grass, soil, and flowers deepens presence

the movement of air across the skin heightens awareness

the shifting textures beneath the feet improve sensory feedback

natural colour restores visual ease and attention

This sensory richness supports regulation. It brings the body into the present moment and offers the nervous system more meaningful information to process.

The result is often a felt sense of calm, alertness, and renewal.

The Restorative Power of Natural Sound

Sound is one of the most overlooked influences on our wellbeing.

Mechanical sound asks the nervous system to filter and brace. Natural sound invites it to soften and listen.

The layered sounds of the natural world—wind moving through leaves, birdsong, insects, distant water, the rustle of grasses—create a soundscape that supports restoration. These sounds are varied, rhythmic, and non-threatening, helping reduce stress load while improving attention and emotional ease.

When we practice Tai Chi outdoors, listening becomes part of the form.

We hear the rhythm of the breath.
We hear the cadence of the season.
We hear life moving around us.

This type of listening is restorative in itself.

Rooting into the Earth

Tai Chi teaches us to begin from the ground.

Outdoors, that lesson becomes immediate.

Practicing on grass, sand, soil, or stone offers the body a more dynamic relationship with balance and grounding than indoor flooring can provide. These natural surfaces stimulate the feet, improve proprioception, and refine postural awareness.

Each surface offers its own teaching:

grass softens and steadies

soil roots and supports

sand challenges and adapts

stone stabilizes and clarifies

The body listens differently when it is in direct conversation with the earth.

Grounding becomes less of an idea and more of an experience.

Colour as Nourishment

The natural world supports us not only through movement and sound, but through colour.

Colour has a direct influence on mood, attention, and nervous system tone. Nature offers a full spectrum of visual nourishment that many indoor environments simply cannot provide.

The colours around us each carry a subtle invitation:

green soothes and restores

blue calms and opens perspective

yellow brightens energy and optimism

red stimulates vitality and circulation

purple invites reflection and imagination

white offers spaciousness and clarity

The eye relaxes in nature.

Green landscapes help restore visual attention. Blue skies and water create spaciousness in the mind. The colours of flowers awaken delight and sensory engagement. This visual diversity offers both stimulation and restoration—an important balance for nervous system wellbeing.

Wellness Grows in Community

At the Greenwell Center, we know healing happens more easily in connection.

Practicing Tai Chi outdoors in a shared space—especially in gardens and community settings—creates an environment where wellness becomes collective.

People gather.
They move.
They breathe.
They reconnect with themselves and one another.

Community practice supports accountability, belonging, and co-regulation. It reduces isolation, fosters emotional resilience, and reminds us that health is not only personal—it is relational.

When we move together outdoors, we create more than a class.
We create a culture of wellbeing.

This is how healthier communities are built:
through shared practices,
through accessible spaces,
through rhythms that support life.

A Seasonal Invitation

As the summer season unfolds, consider this your invitation to step outside.

Take your Tai Chi practice into the garden.
To the grass.
To the shoreline.
To the morning air.

Let the body remember what nature teaches so well:
how to soften,
how to root,
how to listen,
how to breathe.

Fill deeply.
Move gently.
Receive what the season is offering.

And allow your practice to become part of the living rhythm of wellness—within yourself, and within the community around you.

There is something quietly powerful about a conversation that meets you exactly where you are.

In a world filled with fast answers, surface-level wellness advice, and endless information, Be Well with Dr Michelle Greenwell offers something different. It offers a place to pause. A place to listen. A place to reconnect with the deeper wisdom of the body and the many ways healing can unfold when we create the right conditions to support it.

That is the hidden power of the Be Well with Dr Michelle Greenwell podcast.

It is more than a podcast.
It is a guided wellness experience.

Audio Version Here

Each episode is designed to be more than a conversation. It is an invitation into reflection, regulation, and restoration. Through intentional tea rituals, thoughtful discussion, practical tools, and meaningful resources, listeners are invited to do more than simply consume information. They are invited to engage with it, experience it, and apply it in ways that support meaningful change.

At its heart, Be Well with Dr Michelle Greenwell helps listeners build something essential in today’s world: a stronger self-care toolbox.

This is one of the most meaningful values of the podcast. Each episode offers not only insight, but practical ways to understand the body, support the nervous system, and create sustainable habits for wellbeing. Whether the conversation is focused on trauma, resilience, movement, emotional health, music, breath, stress release, or embodied healing, the intention is always the same — to help listeners leave with something they can use.

This is not wellness as performance.
It is wellness as practice.

It is an opportunity to learn how the body responds to stress, how movement changes mood and physiology, how breath supports regulation, how music can influence the nervous system, and how intentional self-care can become one of the most important foundations for long-term wellbeing.

That is what makes the podcast so valuable. It is not simply inspirational. It is practical, thoughtful, and designed for integration.

Listeners are not just invited to hear new ideas.
They are invited to try them.

This is where the real opportunity lies.

Every episode opens a doorway into deeper exploration — whether that means experimenting with a simple stress-releasing tool, bringing more intentional movement into the day, exploring the therapeutic benefits of tea, understanding the role of music in healing, or beginning to see the body through a more holistic and integrated lens.

Introducing…

For those ready to go further, the podcast is also a gateway into the broader work available through the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health.

The Greenwell Center was created to support whole-person wellbeing through education, movement, tea, therapeutic arts, and practical wellness experiences that help people reconnect with the body’s remarkable capacity to heal.

The podcast is one entry point.
The deeper journey continues through the many resources, programs, and experiences designed to help listeners move from inspiration into action.

Through the Greenwell Center, listeners can continue exploring:

movement and wellness programs that support mobility, strength, nervous system regulation, and embodied wellbeing

the Movement Mastery Program through Muscle Tuners International, designed to help people better understand movement patterns, body mechanics, and therapeutic movement

tea education and wellness blends through the Cape Breton Tea Company, where each tea is designed with intention, ritual, and wellbeing in mind

Marathon Jam, exploring healing through music, movement, and therapeutic community experience

online programs, books, workshops, and wellness resources designed to support sustainable self-care and embodied healing

What makes this work unique is that it is not simply about learning more.

It is about learning in ways that help you live differently.

It is about understanding the connection between the body, emotions, movement, breath, music, and environment — and then using that understanding to make practical, supportive changes in daily life.

This is where healing becomes accessible.

Not in grand gestures.
But in meaningful daily practices.
In better questions.
In deeper awareness.
In small shifts that create sustainable change.

That is the hidden power of Be Well with Dr Michelle Greenwell.

It is not simply a podcast to listen to.

It is a place to begin.

A place to learn.
A place to explore.
A place to gather tools.
A place to build resilience.
A place to reconnect with what wellbeing can truly look like.

And for those ready to go deeper, the Greenwell Center offers the next step.

Whether you begin with a podcast episode, a tea ritual, a movement class, a stress-releasing tool, an online program, or a community event, each offering is designed to help you strengthen your self-care toolbox and create a more intentional relationship with your own wellbeing.

The invitation is simple.

Listen deeply.
Learn intentionally.
Explore what resonates.
And begin building the practices that help you feel well, move well, and live well.

Your next step in wellbeing may begin with a single episode.

And from there, the possibilities continue.

In the study of longevity, the concept of the Blue Zones—regions of the world where people live longer, healthier lives—has captured global attention. What stands out in these communities is not just diet or genetics, but a way of living: a deep sense of purpose, daily movement, strong social connections, and a rhythm of life that supports balance in body, mind, and spirit.

These same principles are beautifully embodied in the practice of the 108 Moving Meditation in Tai Chi.

At first glance, 108 movements may seem overwhelming. Many people feel it is too complex, too long, or too difficult to learn. But what if it wasn’t 108 separate movements at all? What if it was simply one continuous flow?

Because that is exactly what it becomes.

And in that realization lies one of the most profound lessons for living well: when we find flow in our movement, we begin to find flow in our lives.

The BioEnergetic Wellness Formula in Motion

The 108 Moving Meditation mirrors the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula:

Intentions and goals for living

Awareness of our current state

Activation of energy toward our future

Connection with community

Growth of intuition through alignment

Each movement, each breath, each transition becomes a living expression of this formula. It is not something we think about—it is something we embody.

The Hidden Journey Within the 108

What many practitioners don’t initially realize is that the set unfolds in three powerful sections—each reflecting a phase of life: past, present, and future.

1. The First 17 Movements: Honouring the Past

This is where many begin—and where many find comfort.

The first 17 movements reveal how our past lives within us:

In our posture

In our flexibility

In our strength

In our patterns of movement

Here, energy pathways begin to open. The Bubbling Spring in the feet awakens, stimulating the kidney meridian and gently releasing fear and anxiety. Breath deepens, reminding us that we are naturally designed to breathe fully when stress is released. This can assist in releasing guilt, grief and regret.

Movements like Grasp the Bird’s Tail help us release stored emotional tension, while White Stork Spreads Wings invites us to rise above past limitations.

The hips open and close, nurturing the lower Dan Tien—our reservoir of vitality—teaching us to store energy rather than deplete it.

Even in the opening, we are introduced to fundamental energetic forces:

Expansion into possibility

Pausing for presence

Rolling back to release tension

Grounding into the earth

This section becomes a mirror: showing us where we have been, and how those experiences still live within our tissues and biofield.

2. The Middle Section: Awakening the Present

As we transition into the second phase, we enter a space of possibility.

Move Hands Like Clouds invites multidimensional awareness:

Up and down

Side to side

Forward and back

Our eyes scan the horizon, our nervous system awakens, and we begin to perceive the world more fully.

Here, purpose begins to emerge.

Push the Needle to Sea Bottom reminds us that we each carry gifts within us.
Fan Penetrates Back becomes the act of offering those gifts to the world.

This is the present moment—where we recognize our role, our potential, and our ability to contribute to the wellbeing of others.

3. The Final Section: Stepping Into the Future

In the final phase, we meet Fair Lady Works at Shuttles, a movement rich in symbolism.

Like the four legs of the turtle—often associated with the world itself—we move in four directions, expanding our perspective beyond ourselves. We begin to see our place in the greater whole.

In Canada, we often refer to our land as Turtle Island—a reminder that we are part of something much larger.

As we repeat Move Hands Like Clouds, we are invited once again to shift, adapt, and think differently. We release rigidity and open to multidimensional opportunities.

This is the future—not something fixed, but something we actively shape through awareness, intention, and movement.

From Movement to Longevity

The connection to Blue Zone living becomes clear.

The 108 Moving Meditation:

Keeps the body in gentle, consistent motion

Cultivates breath and reduces stress

Strengthens awareness and emotional balance

Encourages purpose and contribution

Builds connection—within ourselves and with others

It is not just exercise. It is a way of living.

Through this practice, we move:

Out of the past

Into the present

Toward a consciously created future

We begin to understand that longevity is not just about adding years to life—but adding life to our years.

The Journey Is the Reward

Every step, every movement, every breath is part of the journey.

And as beautifully expressed by the Wine Country Tai Chi Society:

“The journey is the reward.”

So as you reflect on your own path—your health, your purpose, your connection to the world—return to the movements.

At the Greenwell Center, our mission is to support whole-person wellness—body, mind, and energy—through practices that integrate science, art, and lived experience. Central to this work is Dr Michelle Greenwell’s long-standing relationship with the Canadian Association of BioEnergetic Wellness (CanBeWell), an organization that brings together dedicated practitioners across Canada and around the world to share knowledge, research, and practical tools that empower people in their everyday lives.

Through CanBeWell, she has had the privilege of collaborating with incredible colleagues who are passionate about energy activation techniques and balance practices. These tools are designed to help people connect with their own internal wisdom, release tension, and cultivate resilience—supporting wellness before symptoms or challenges arise. Together, we are committed to making these practices accessible, evidence-informed, and adaptable to every lifestyle.

Sharing the CanBeWell Public Newsletter with tips and tools with monthly health themes is also a great opportunity to highlight how BioEnergetic Wellness techniques can help everyday.

Embodying Wellness Through Retreat and Movement

One of the highlights of the year at the Greenwell Center is the Artfilled Wellness Retreat, taking place this August on beautiful Cape Breton Island. This immersive eight-day experience combines movement, music, art, nature, and bioenergetic practices to provide a full-spectrum approach to wellness. Participants engage in energy balancing exercises, mindful movement, creative expression, and restorative experiences, leaving with practical tools to integrate wellness into daily life.

Retreats like this are a chance to step away from routine, reconnect with ourselves, and experience wellness as embodied practice. They are also an opportunity to engage with a global community of practitioners who share knowledge, guidance, and inspiration.

Celebrating World Tai Chi and Qi Gong Day

April marks World Tai Chi and Qi Gong Day, an annual celebration of movement, mindfulness, and energy awareness. This year, our class in Baddeck will come together to honor these practices, demonstrating how small daily movements can profoundly support posture, balance, energy flow, and mental clarity.

Tai Chi and Qi Gong are more than exercise—they are living examples of integration, balance, and embodied awareness. By participating, we strengthen the connection between mind, body, and energy, while fostering community and collective wellbeing.

A Collaborative Vision for Wellness

Through my work with CanBeWell, the Greenwell Center continues to foster collaboration across borders. Practitioners from Canada and beyond contribute to energy activation workshops, educational programming, and hands-on guidance, helping participants develop practices tailored to their unique needs. This network of colleagues enriches the community experience, ensuring that wellness is both personal and shared.

The collective aim is clear: to move from reactive care to proactive, daily support of our health and vitality. Whether through energy balancing exercises, mindful movement, or creative engagement, these tools help people regulate stress, restore energy, and cultivate resilience before challenges arise.

Join Us in Experiencing Wellness

We invite you to explore the offerings at the Greenwell Center and through CanBeWell:

We’ve all heard the advice.

Go to bed at the same time.
Turn off your screens.
Drink a calming tea.

And yet… so many people are still lying awake at night, wondering why sleep won’t come.

The truth is, sleep isn’t something you can force with the right checklist.
Sleep is something the body allows—when the conditions are right.

Instead of asking, “What should I do before bed?”
A more powerful question is:
“What has my body experienced throughout the day that makes sleep possible?”

Here are five often-overlooked factors that influence whether your body can truly let go into rest.

1. Your Body Clock May Not Be Set—Even If You Think It Is

It’s not just about when you go to bed.
It’s about whether your internal rhythm is synchronized.

If your body hasn’t clearly registered:

when the day begins

when energy should rise

when it’s safe to slow down

…it won’t confidently move into sleep.

Many people live in blurred signals—indoor lighting, inconsistent exposure to daylight, irregular pacing of activity. We can reset the body clock with a simple ear rub while bringing awareness to the time of day. Rub your ear from the top to the bottom, three times on each ear. Notice the time on the clock. A great pick up in the middle of the day.

A gentle shift:
Let your body feel the day. Step outside early. Let natural light meet your eyes. Allow your system to register contrast—light and dark, movement and stillness.

Sleep improves when the body trusts the rhythm of the day.

2. Movement Isn’t About Exercise—It’s About Timing and Circulation

You can work out every day and still struggle with sleep.

Why?

Because the body doesn’t just need movement—it needs movement at the right times, in the right ways.

Too little movement → energy stagnates

Too much intensity late in the day → energy stays activated

What the body craves is circulation—energy moving through tissues, joints, breath, and fascia.

A gentle shift:
Ask not “Did I exercise?” but
“Did my energy move today?”

Small, frequent movement—especially throughout the day—helps the body complete its natural energy cycles so it doesn’t feel “unfinished” at night. This may be less than 40% effort, it may be just a few repetitions, and it may require a sprinkle through the day.

3. Organ Systems Carry the Load of Your Day

When one system in the body is overburdened, it doesn’t just affect digestion or circulation—it affects sleep.

A taxed nervous system keeps you alert

A strained digestive system can create nighttime discomfort

An overwhelmed liver (processing stress, hormones, or toxins) may contribute to waking between 1–3 AM

Shallow breathing may contribute to waking between 3 and 5 am.

In many traditional frameworks, each organ system has a rhythm—and when one is out of balance, it can pull energy away from rest.

A gentle shift:
Notice patterns:

When do you wake in the night?

When do you feel most depleted or wired?

How deep was your breath during the day? In the evening?

Did your diet contain green and colourful foods to support the liver?

These are not random—they are messages about where support is needed.

4. Thoughts Don’t Just Disappear—They Need Movement Too

Repetitive thinking isn’t just “in your head.”
It’s energy that hasn’t been processed.

If thoughts are not expressed, resolved, or moved during the day, they accumulate—and nighttime is when they surface.

This is why people often feel mentally “loud” when everything else is quiet.

A gentle shift:
Create micro-releases throughout the day:

Speak things out loud

Write a few unfiltered lines

Move your body when emotions rise

Think of it as digesting your thoughts in real time, rather than storing them for the night shift. Holding the fingertips lightly on the forehead, ESR’s (Emotional Stress Release Points), can help circulate the blood through the brain to help process those nagging thoughts.

5. Flow Matters: Water, Nutrients, and Subtle Environment

Sleep is deeply influenced by what is flowing—or not flowing—through your system.

Hydration:
It’s not just how much water you drink, but whether it’s moving.
Stagnation in the body can mirror stagnation in rest.

Nutrients:
Deficiencies in minerals like magnesium or imbalances in blood sugar can quietly disrupt sleep cycles.

Environmental Sensitivity:
Some individuals are more sensitive to subtle inputs—like electromagnetic fields (EMFs), artificial light, or ambient noise.
While not always obvious, these can keep the nervous system in a low-level state of alertness.

A gentle shift:
Support flow:

Sip water consistently rather than all at once

Notice how your body responds to foods, timing, and environment

Create a sleep space that feels clear, calm, and supportive

Remove the electronic devices from your bedroom and use a battery operated or winding alarm clock

The Deeper Truth: Sleep Is an Exhale of the Whole Day

When the body has:

received clear signals

moved its energy

processed its experiences

supported its systems

and allowed flow

…it doesn’t need to be told to sleep.

It naturally lets go.

A New Approach to Rest

Instead of building stricter routines or adding more to your evening…

What if the invitation was to live in a way that doesn’t need unwinding?

To:

move when energy asks to move

pause when something needs processing

nourish the body as it communicates

and allow rhythm to emerge rather than be forced

Sleep, then, becomes less of a nightly challenge…

…and more of a quiet return to balance.

Dr Michelle Greenwell, CIH BioEW, loves to share new ideas for a day full of vitality and a night of deep rest. On Friday, March 27 at 10:30 – 12:30 pm she will be doing a Sleep Deep Dive for participants wanting to explore more deeply new patterns for daytime support for sleep. The cost is $25 and you can join her at NSCC in Port Hawkesbury with the CORAH program. On Thursday, April 2 at 6:30 – 8 pm, Michelle will be in Baddeck at the Public Library providing an introductory session. Everyone is welcome.

This weekend, in our upcoming Sound Workshop, Ann-Marie Boudreau and I invite you to explore a profound truth: your body is an instrument, and your spine is its central channel of resonance.

The Spine as a Living Frequency Pathway

Often, we think of the spine as a structural support—a column that holds us upright. But it is so much more.

Each vertebra carries its own energetic signature, its own vibrational quality. Together, they form a dynamic pathway through which information, energy, and sound travel. When the spine is aligned and supported, this pathway becomes clear and receptive. When restricted, compressed, or held in tension, the body’s natural resonance becomes muted.

Just like a musical instrument, the body requires space to create sound.

Posture: The Gateway to Resonance

Posture is not about rigidity or perfection—it is about availability.

When we bring awareness to how we sit, stand, and move, we begin to create subtle openings within the body:

Space between the vertebrae

Freedom within the ribcage

Ease in the diaphragm

Fluidity through the fascia

These openings allow sound to travel more freely—not only externally, but internally.

With supportive posture, sound doesn’t just pass through us… it lands, it vibrates, it awakens.

Breath: Creating Space for Sound

Breath is the bridge between structure and vibration.

When we breathe deeply and consciously, we create expansion:

The lungs fill and lift

The ribs widen

The spine subtly elongates

The internal environment becomes more spacious

This spaciousness is essential for resonance. Without it, sound has nowhere to go.

As we deepen our breath, we invite sound to move into the body more fully—touching tissues, organs, and energetic pathways.

Sound as an Internal Healing Force

Sound is not just something we hear—it is something we feel.

Every tone, every frequency interacts with the body’s internal landscape. When posture and breath are aligned, sound can:

Stimulate circulation and fluid movement

Support nervous system regulation

Activate cellular communication

Encourage emotional release

Restore a sense of harmony and coherence

In this way, sound becomes a partner in healing—working from the inside out.

Raising Frequency, Receiving Healing

In our workshop, we will explore both sides of the vibrational equation:

How to raise your internal frequency through posture, breath, and awareness

How to receive healing frequencies through sound, allowing them to resonate deeply within the body

This is not about forcing change. It is about creating the conditions for the body to remember its natural state of vitality, flow, and love.

An Invitation to Listen Within

When we create space in the spine, breathe with intention, and allow sound to move through us, something extraordinary happens:

We begin to hear ourselves more clearly.

Not just physically—but energetically, emotionally, and intuitively.

The body becomes a place of listening.
A place of connection.
A place of resonance.

And from that resonance, healing unfolds.

At the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health, we believe that healing is not only possible—it is experiential, creative, and deeply rooted in connection. This belief comes to life once again as Marathon Jam hosts the 2nd Annual Healing Through Music and Movement Event, a powerful, interactive day designed to support veterans, first responders, healthcare professionals, caregivers, and anyone seeking meaningful tools for self-care and resilience.

Following a remarkable inaugural year, hosted by Stonefield Cellars Winery in Stokesdale, NC, this program was honoured with a Legacy Leader Award in 2025 through CanBeWell.org, recognizing its impact in bridging science, creativity, and community wellness. This year, the experience expands even further—offering participants new ways to explore healing through sound, movement, and artistic expression. Take a look at our video from last year!

Expanding the Experience: What’s New in 2026

This year’s event introduces exciting new elements designed to deepen the healing journey:

Instrument Exploration Program: Participants will engage directly with sound, discovering how rhythm, vibration, and tone can support emotional release and nervous system regulation.

Additional Facilitators: Bringing new perspective and expertise to broaden the learning experience.

NeuroArt Station: A creative space where participants can explore the intersection of art and neuroscience—translating internal experiences into visual expression to support integration and insight.

These additions reflect a growing understanding: healing is multi-sensory, and when we engage the body, mind, and creative spirit together, transformation becomes more accessible.

The Heart of the Program: A Signature Formula for Healing

At the core of this event is a thoughtfully designed experiential framework developed by Dr Michelle Greenwell, CIH BioEW, Colin MacLeod, and Tanya Levy, MSW.

This signature program weaves a formula through the day that inspires letting go, walking forward, and finding balance and flow. Each activity and the overall organization of the day, plus the “right” cup of tea, guides participants through a carefully curated sequence of music, movement, and reflective practices that support:

Awareness of the body’s response to stress and trauma

Gentle unwinding of held tension patterns

Re-patterning through rhythm, breath, and intentional movement

Integration through creative and sensory-based practices

This “formula building” approach empowers participants not only to experience healing in the moment, but to leave with tools they can apply in everyday life.

Continuing the Conversation: Podcast Connections

The impact of this work extends beyond the event itself. Several of last year’s facilitators and themes have been featured on the “Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell” podcast, offering deeper insights into the science and stories behind the practices shared.

These episodes serve as a bridge—allowing listeners to revisit key concepts, explore personal journeys, and integrate learning at their own pace.

As the program grows, new podcast interviews are on the horizon, highlighting the voices and expertise of the additional facilitators joining this year’s event – Karen Novy and Matthew Seymour. These conversations will continue to expand our understanding of trauma recovery, resilience, and the role of creative expression in healing.

A Community of Healing and Possibility

What makes this event truly special is the community it creates. Participants are not just attendees—they are active contributors to a shared space of exploration, support, and transformation.

Whether you are navigating the effects of stress, supporting others in demanding roles, or simply seeking a deeper connection to your own well-being, this day offers an invitation:

To listen.
To move.
To create.
To heal.

At the Greenwell Center, we are honoured to support and celebrate initiatives like this—where innovation meets compassion, and where healing becomes a collective journey.

Our Cape Breton Tea Company tea highlighted The Autograph, Kitchen Party and Fit as a Fiddle. This year we will be highlighting a few signature blends. Stay tuned to learn more in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned for more updates, facilitator highlights, and podcast releases as we prepare for another inspiring event of Healing Through Music and Movement – Saturday, April 18th.
