As we conclude our Migraine Awareness Month podcast series, I find myself reflecting on a question that extends far beyond migraines:

What if healing begins with peace?

Not peace as a destination.

Not peace as something we earn after the pain is gone.

But peace as a practice.

A way of being.

A relationship we cultivate with ourselves, even in the midst of challenge.

In our final episode, I had the privilege of speaking with Karen Lee Cohen, known affectionately as the Peace Whisperer. Karen is the founder of the Let’s Be Peace Movement, author of Let’s Be Peace: 20 Unique Paths to Healing Yourself and Spreading Peace in the World, and an advocate for helping people discover that inner peace may be one of the most powerful healing tools available to us.

Her message was both simple and profound:

When we create peace within ourselves, we create the conditions for healing, wellbeing, and positive change in the world around us.

Audio Version

What Does Peace Have to Do with Migraines?

At first glance, peace and migraines may seem unrelated.

After all, migraines are neurological events involving complex interactions between the brain, nervous system, blood vessels, hormones, inflammation, sensory processing, and stress responses.

Yet modern research increasingly points toward something many holistic practitioners have observed for decades:

The nervous system plays a significant role in both the experience of pain and the body’s capacity to recover.

When the body remains in a chronic state of vigilance, stress, fear, or overload, the nervous system can become sensitized.

This does not mean stress causes migraines.

Nor does it mean migraines are “all in your head.”

Rather, it suggests that the internal environment in which we experience migraine matters.

When we feel threatened, overwhelmed, pressured, or constantly bracing against life, the body often shifts into protective patterns.

Muscles tighten.

Breathing becomes shallow.

Sleep quality declines.

Inflammatory responses may increase.

The nervous system becomes increasingly reactive.

Many people living with chronic migraines recognize this cycle.

The fear of the next migraine becomes stressful.

The unpredictability becomes stressful.

The disruption to life becomes stressful.

And before long, the body is carrying not only the migraine itself, but the emotional burden surrounding it.

The Science of Peace

Researchers studying meditation, mindfulness, heart coherence, compassion practices, and relaxation techniques have found measurable effects on the nervous system.

Peaceful states are associated with:

Reduced sympathetic nervous system activation

Improved vagal tone

Greater heart rate variability

Lower levels of stress hormones

Improved emotional regulation

Enhanced resilience and coping capacity

These changes do not eliminate every health challenge.

However, they create conditions in which the body often functions more efficiently and recovers more effectively.

Peace is not passive.

It is biological.

Peace changes breathing patterns.

Peace changes muscle tension.

Peace changes brain wave activity.

Peace changes perception.

And perception plays a significant role in how we experience discomfort and pain.

From Fighting Pain to Creating Peace

One of the most powerful ideas Karen shared is that we often spend so much energy fighting what we don’t want that we forget to cultivate what we do want.

When migraines occur, it is natural to seek relief.

Relief is important.

Medical care is important.

Support is important.

But alongside those approaches, there may be another question worth asking:

What am I inviting into my life?

Am I inviting calm?

Am I inviting rest?

Am I inviting connection?

Am I inviting compassion?

Am I inviting peace?

The nervous system responds differently when we focus solely on escaping pain than when we simultaneously cultivate experiences of safety, gratitude, purpose, and wellbeing.

This subtle shift can transform the healing journey.

Instead of living in constant resistance to symptoms, we begin building a relationship with wellness.

Transforming Dis-Ease into Fulfillment

The word “disease” can be viewed through another lens:

Dis-ease.

A state in which we are no longer experiencing ease.

This perspective does not blame the individual for illness.

Rather, it invites curiosity.

Where has ease been lost?

Where has joy been forgotten?

Where has peace become difficult to access?

Many of our podcast guests this month shared a common theme.

Healing was not solely about reducing symptoms.

It was also about rediscovering meaning.

Reclaiming identity.

Finding purpose.

Connecting with community.

Expressing creativity.

Telling their story.

Trusting themselves.

These experiences create fulfillment.

And fulfillment has a remarkable ability to change how we experience life.

Including pain.

While fulfillment may not remove every migraine, it often changes the landscape in which migraines occur.

Life becomes larger than the condition.

Possibility becomes larger than the limitation.

Hope becomes larger than fear.

A Tea Ritual for Peace

For this conversation, we featured Mission4Change CommuniTEA from the Cape Breton Tea Company.

Its affirmation beautifully reflects the theme of the episode:

“In community we are empowered for change.”

Two herbs featured in this blend offer a meaningful reminder of the relationship between peace and healing.

Lavender

Lavender carries the spiritual essence of serenity, trust, and restoration.

It encourages us to soften our grip on stress and create space for calm to emerge naturally.

Strawberry Leaves

Strawberry leaves symbolize generosity, heart-centred living, and the nurturing power of community.

They remind us that healing is rarely a solitary journey.

Together these herbs invite us to cultivate peace within while extending compassion outward.

Peace as a Daily Practice

Karen’s Let’s Be Peace Movement reminds us that peace is not something reserved for special occasions.

It is a daily practice.

A conscious choice.

A way of relating to ourselves and others.

Peace may look like:

Taking a mindful breath before reacting.

Enjoying a cup of tea without distraction.

Moving your body gently.

Spending time in nature.

Expressing gratitude.

Listening deeply.

Offering kindness.

Choosing self-compassion.

These simple acts may seem small.

Yet collectively they help create the internal conditions that support wellbeing.

The Invitation

As we close Migraine Awareness Month, perhaps the greatest lesson is this:

Healing is not only about removing pain.

It is also about creating peace.

Peace within the nervous system.

Peace within the mind.

Peace within the heart.

And peace within our communities.

If we can learn to cultivate peace alongside our healing journey, we may discover that wellness is not something waiting for us at the end of the road.

It is something we can begin experiencing today.

Expanding the Blue Zone Concept Through NeuroArts and Everyday Creativity

What if wellness was not something you had to work so hard to achieve?

What if the path to greater wellbeing could be found in the simple acts of moving your body, listening to music, spending time in nature, creating art, sharing stories, and gathering with others in meaningful ways?

At the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health, we believe that wellness is not simply the absence of illness—it is the cultivation of a life that feels connected, purposeful, creative, and joyful. This perspective aligns beautifully with the lessons we learn from the world’s Blue Zones, regions where people consistently enjoy longer, healthier lives through community, movement, purpose, social engagement, and connection to nature.

Today, emerging research in NeuroArts is helping us understand why these practices are so powerful.

NeuroArts explores how artistic and creative experiences influence the brain, nervous system, emotions, physiology, and overall health. It is showing us that activities such as music, movement, visual art, storytelling, dance, photography, and creative expression are not simply hobbies—they are essential contributors to human wellbeing.

Nature: The Original Art Gallery

When we step into nature, we enter a living masterpiece.

The colours of the sky, forests, flowers, and oceans provide visual nourishment. The sounds of birds, wind, water, and wildlife create natural rhythms that calm the nervous system. The textures beneath our feet and the scents carried on the air invite us into a deeper sensory relationship with the world around us.

Environmental mindfulness asks us to engage all of our senses:

Listen to the sounds around you.

Feel the ground supporting your movement.

Notice the warmth of sunlight and the touch of the wind.

Observe the colours and patterns that naturally surround you.

Breathe deeply and experience the fragrances of trees, flowers, soil, and water.

Slow down enough to appreciate the beauty that is always present.

These moments of awareness are not passive experiences. They are opportunities for nervous system regulation, emotional balance, creativity, and restoration.

The Art of Moving Well

Movement is one of the most accessible forms of creative expression.

Practices such as Tai Chi invite us to move with awareness, intention, and flow. Rather than focusing on performance, we learn to listen to our bodies and move in harmony with natural principles of balance and efficiency.

As we practice outdoors, movement becomes a conversation with nature. We respond to the terrain beneath our feet, the breeze on our skin, the sounds around us, and the changing environment.

This type of mindful movement supports physical strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility while also encouraging mental clarity, emotional resilience, and a deeper sense of calm.

When movement is paired with nature, music, creativity, and community, it becomes a powerful NeuroArts experience.

Living a NeuroArts Lifestyle

Imagine a day that includes:

Beginning with Tai Chi in the morning sunlight.

Journaling reflections inspired by nature.

Listening to music that uplifts and inspires.

Exploring colour through intuitive art.

Photographing landscapes that spark curiosity and wonder.

Sharing stories and laughter with others.

Experiencing moments of mindfulness throughout the day.

These experiences stimulate multiple areas of the brain simultaneously while supporting emotional wellbeing and social connection.

Rather than separating wellness from everyday living, NeuroArts encourages us to weave creativity into the fabric of daily life.

The result is often a greater sense of ease, purpose, vitality, and belonging.

The Artfilled Wellness Retreat: A Living Laboratory for Wellbeing

This philosophy comes to life during the Artfilled Wellness Retreat on Cape Breton Island, August 16–23, 2026.

More than a retreat, this immersive experience explores how movement, music, art, colour, nature, photography, journaling, sound, and community can work together to create a holistic pathway to wellbeing.

Participants will engage in:

Tai Chi and mindful movement practices

Sound experiences and intuitive music

Creative art exploration

Nature immersion and environmental mindfulness

Photography and observation exercises

Reflective journaling and storytelling

Community connection and shared learning

BioEnergetic Wellness practices that support awareness and personal growth

Throughout the week, participants will discover how these activities influence the nervous system, enhance resilience, foster creativity, and support overall health.

The retreat is designed around the understanding that wellbeing is not created through a single intervention. It emerges through the integration of many experiences that nourish the body, mind, emotions, spirit, and community.

Creating Ease for Living

One of the greatest lessons from both Blue Zone research and NeuroArts science is that wellbeing thrives when we create environments that naturally support healthy living.

When we surround ourselves with beauty, movement, music, creativity, nature, and meaningful relationships, wellness becomes less about effort and more about lifestyle.

We begin to experience what many participants describe as an “ease for living”—a feeling of being supported by the choices, environments, and communities that surround us.

As you move through the summer months, consider how you might bring more creativity into your daily routine. Take a photograph of something beautiful. Spend time outdoors. Listen to music that moves you. Sketch, paint, write, dance, or simply sit quietly and observe nature.

Every small act of creativity becomes an opportunity to nourish your brain, regulate your nervous system, and deepen your connection to the world around you.

The future of wellness may not be found in doing more.

It may be found in remembering how to live artfully, move naturally, and reconnect with the beauty that has always been available to us.

Join Us

During Migraine Awareness Month, we’ve been exploring a powerful truth: healing is often found in the small things we do consistently.

While many people search for a single solution to improve their health and wellbeing, lasting change is often built through simple daily practices that help us listen to our bodies, regulate stress, and create moments of awareness throughout the day.

This month on the Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Tanya Levy and Marian Egan about the role of creativity, intuition, colour, frequency, and BioEnergetic Wellness tools in supporting health and wellness. What emerged from our conversation was a reminder that healing doesn’t have to be complicated.

Sometimes it begins with a card.

Sometimes it begins with a picture.

Sometimes it begins with a question.

And sometimes it begins with giving ourselves permission to pause and listen.

Audio Version

Why Daily Self-Care Matters

Many people living with migraines, chronic stress, fatigue, pain, or emotional overwhelm struggle with consistency. When symptoms are present, it can feel difficult to know what to do or where to begin.

This is where practical wellness tools become valuable.

The most effective self-care practices are often those that are:

Easy to access

Simple to understand

Flexible enough to use anywhere

Adaptable to your current energy level

Supportive of awareness and self-reflection

When used regularly, these tools help build habits that support nervous system regulation, emotional resilience, and greater body awareness.

A Cup of Change: Mission4Change CommuniTEA

One of the simplest self-care habits we can create is taking a few moments to pause with a cup of tea.

During our podcast conversation with Tanya Levy and Marian Egan, we featured Mission4Change CommuniTEA from the Cape Breton Tea Company. Its affirmation reminds us:

“In community we are empowered for change.”

This gentle herbal blend was created as a reminder that healing does not happen in isolation. Whether we are recovering from migraines, managing stress, navigating life transitions, or simply trying to create healthier habits, we are strengthened through connection—with ourselves, with nature, and with others.

Two ingredients in this blend beautifully reflect that message.

Lavender – The Essence of Inner Peace

Lavender has long been associated with relaxation, calm, and restoration. Spiritually, it carries the essence of serenity and trust. It reminds us to soften our grip on stress, quiet the mind, and create space for peace to emerge naturally.

For those living with migraines or nervous system overload, lavender symbolizes the importance of slowing down and allowing the body to receive support.

Strawberry Leaves – The Essence of Community and Generosity

Strawberry leaves embody heart-centred living, generosity, and kindness. They remind us that wellness often grows through simple acts of care—for ourselves and for others.

Like a healthy garden, our wellbeing flourishes when nurtured consistently and shared generously.

A Tea with a Greater Purpose

Mission4Change CommuniTEA also supports a larger mission.

A portion of the proceeds from every purchase helps support the Moyo Family, whose community faces significant challenges due to drought, food insecurity, lack of access to medicine, education, and stable shelter.

For many families, peace is not an abstract concept.

Peace means food on the table.

Peace means access to healthcare.

Peace means education and opportunity.

Peace means hope.

Every cup becomes an opportunity to contribute to meaningful change while creating a mindful moment of restoration in your own day.

As you enjoy your tea, take a moment to reflect on this affirmation:

“In community we are empowered for change.”

Sometimes self-care begins with a single cup.

Sometimes change does too.

Heart Art Magic: Healing Through Colour and Frequency

Marian Egan’s Heart Art Magic offers a beautiful example of how creativity can support wellness.

Through intuitive painting and frequency-based artwork, Marian creates visual experiences that invite reflection, relaxation, and self-discovery. Her artwork is designed to engage both the conscious and subconscious mind, encouraging viewers to notice what resonates, what draws their attention, and what messages may be emerging through colour, shape, and imagery.

Art has long been recognized as a pathway for emotional expression and stress reduction. Intuitive art takes this one step further by allowing us to explore healing without needing to “figure everything out.”

Sometimes a colour speaks.

Sometimes an image invites a memory.

Sometimes a painting becomes a doorway into deeper awareness.

For those navigating health challenges, intuitive art can provide a gentle and supportive way to reconnect with themselves, (the science of NeuroArts).

The Power of Wellness Card Decks

One of the easiest ways to create a daily self-care habit is through the use of wellness card decks.

Unlike traditional learning formats, card decks offer bite-sized guidance that can be used in just a few minutes each day.

Draw a card in the morning.

Reflect on the message.

Apply one simple action.

Allow awareness to unfold.

The decks created by Marian Egan, Tanya Levy, and Dr. Michelle Greenwell each offer unique pathways for personal growth and self-discovery.

Heart Art Magic Cards – Marian Egan

Marian’s cards combine imagery, intuition, colour, and personal reflection to help users access their own inner wisdom.

These cards are particularly valuable for those who connect with visual learning and creative exploration. They can be used for daily inspiration, meditation, journaling prompts, or personal insight. Marian also has a course for using the cards that can help you dive deeper.

It’s In The Cards – Tanya Levy with Michelle Greenwell and Paula Nowak Droog

It’s In The Cards deck provides practical wellness strategies that can be used individually or combined to create personalized self-care plans.

The cards encourage users to explore possibilities, experiment with new approaches, and discover combinations that support their unique needs.

The beauty of this deck is its flexibility. Whether you have five minutes or an hour, the cards provide simple actions that help create momentum toward wellbeing.

Affirmations for the BioField – Dr. Michelle Greenwell & Tanya Levy

The Affirmations for the BioField Deck combines nature photography, positive affirmations, and BioEnergetic Wellness principles to help users identify areas of support within the body and biofield.

Each card invites reflection, awareness, and intentional action. The deck can be used as a daily affirmation practice, an intuitive guidance tool, or as part of a broader wellness routine.

Users often find that the imagery speaks to them before they even read the message, creating opportunities for deeper insight and self-awareness.

You can find these decks in Tanya’s shop, as well as here at the Greenwell Center’s shop.

Learning at Your Own Pace

For those wishing to explore these concepts more deeply, the Greenwell Center offers a variety of on-demand courses designed to support lifelong learning and personal growth.

Online learning provides the flexibility to engage with wellness education when it fits your schedule and energy level.

Popular topics include:

BioEnergetic Wellness

Stress Management

Movement and Mindfulness

Tai Chi

Self-Care Practices

Personal Growth

Intuitive Development

Wellness Education

These courses allow participants to revisit lessons, practice new skills, and integrate concepts gradually into daily life. The options include Movement and Music Introduction, Movement and Music, and Symphony of Radiance. Each series involves a different biofield focus. As well, the addition of intuitive art and music, along with nature, photography, art, colour, movement, tea, herbs, affirmations and more, envelop each lesson. Two books have resulted from the in-depth explorations, and these will be launching very soon for people to gain even more insight into their health and wellness, as well as their vitality plan.

The goal is not information overload.

The goal is practical application.

Building a Self-Care Habit That Lasts

One of the most important lessons we can learn is that wellness doesn’t have to happen all at once.

Small actions matter.

A daily card draw.

A five-minute reflection.

A mindful cup of tea.

A Tai Chi movement.

A moment of gratitude.

A pause to notice your breath.

These simple practices become the building blocks of resilience, awareness, and long-term wellbeing.

The card decks, intuitive art resources, and online courses available through the Greenwell Center provide accessible ways to begin that journey.

Whether you are navigating migraines, chronic stress, life transitions, or simply seeking greater balance, these tools offer opportunities to reconnect with yourself one day at a time.

One of those remarkable teachers is Dr. Svetlana Masgutova, whose work in reflex integration has profoundly shaped how I understand the body’s innate healing intelligence.

For those who may not be familiar with her work, Dr. Masgutova has spent decades researching the role of primary reflexes in human development, learning, stress recovery, trauma resolution, and overall well-being. Through her work, we are reminded that the body is not broken—it is constantly seeking balance, adaptation, and homeostasis.

As part of this reflection, I invite you to watch this insightful presentation from Dr. Masgutova:

Understanding Reflexes Beyond Childhood

Many people think reflexes are only important during infancy. Yet these foundational neurological patterns continue to influence us throughout our lives.

When stress, injury, illness, trauma, or developmental challenges interrupt healthy reflex maturation, the body often creates compensations. These adaptations may help us survive difficult circumstances, but over time they can contribute to:

Chronic tension patterns

Postural imbalances

Sensory overwhelm

Difficulties with regulation

Persistent stress responses

Reduced resilience

Increased vulnerability to symptoms such as headaches and migraines

The body is always attempting to organize itself in the most efficient way possible. Sometimes, however, it becomes stuck in patterns that no longer serve its highest level of functioning.

How Reflex Integration Influences My Tai Chi and Movement Programs

My studies with Dr. Masgutova have become deeply woven into the movement programs I teach through the Greenwell Center.

Whether we are practicing Tai Chi, participating in the Movement and Music Program, exploring the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula, or engaging in community wellness workshops, we are continually working with the body’s natural desire to organize, regulate, and heal.

Tai Chi offers a beautiful environment for reflex integration because it encourages:

Cross-body coordination

Balance and stability

Midline integration

Rhythm and timing

Breath regulation

Relaxed awareness

Nervous system regulation

When movement is approached mindfully, we create opportunities for the brain and body to reconnect pathways that may have become disconnected through stress or trauma.

Over the years, I have witnessed individuals discover improved balance, greater confidence, reduced tension, enhanced focus, and a renewed sense of connection with their bodies through these practices.

Migraines: Listening to the Body’s Priorities

One of the most important lessons I have learned from studying reflexes, neurodevelopment, BioEnergetic Wellness, and complementary health approaches is that symptoms are often part of a much larger story.

A migraine is not simply a headache.

It can represent a complex interaction between physical, neurological, biochemical, emotional, energetic, and environmental factors.

The body continually prioritizes homeostasis—its ability to maintain internal balance. When multiple systems become overwhelmed, symptoms may emerge as signals that something requires attention.

This is why so many people experience frustration with trial-and-error approaches. They may find temporary relief, only to discover the migraines return because the underlying priorities have not yet been identified.

Through approaches such as:

Reflex integration

BioEnergetic Wellness assessments

Tai Chi and mindful movement

Stress regulation techniques

Therapeutic Touch (R)

Touch for Health (R)

Breath and awareness practices

we can begin exploring the body’s priorities more efficiently.

When we understand what the body is asking for first, we often discover opportunities to support recovery more effectively and reduce unnecessary detours along the healing journey.

The Goal Is Not Just Symptom Reduction

While reducing migraine symptoms is important, my hope for every individual is something even greater.

I want people to reclaim their lives.

I want them to return to the activities they love.

I want them to pursue dreams they may have placed on hold.

I want them to discover joy again.

When migraines become less dominant, new possibilities emerge. We begin to ask different questions:

What have I always wanted to learn?

What experiences have I postponed?

What creative gifts am I ready to express?

What would my life look like if I trusted my body again?

These questions shift us from merely managing symptoms to creating a meaningful future.

Looking Ahead: Emotions and Healing

This summer, I am excited to share our upcoming podcast series:

Emotions and Healing

We will explore the fascinating connections between emotional well-being, self-care, resilience, healing, and personal transformation. Our guests, Kate Montgomery, ND and Denise Cambiotti, HCD CIH BioEW, will share practical tools, inspiring stories, and empowering perspectives that support the healing process from multiple angles.

There is so much valuable information available to help us understand ourselves more deeply and participate actively in our own wellness journeys.

Stay tuned as we continue these conversations throughout Summer 2026.

A Final Reflection

The body is always communicating.

Whether through movement, posture, reflexes, emotions, energy, or symptoms such as migraines, there is wisdom waiting to be heard.

By learning to listen with curiosity rather than fear, we create opportunities for healing that honor the whole person.

Thank you, Dr. Masgutova, for the insights and research that continue to inspire practitioners around the world and for helping us better understand the remarkable intelligence of the human body.

For those who live with migraine, the story often begins with one urgent wish:

Make it stop.

Stop the pain.
Stop the nausea.
Stop the sensitivity to light.
Stop the disruption.
Stop the cancellations.
Stop the unpredictability.

And for good reason.

Migraine is far more than “just a headache.”

It is a complex neurological experience that can impact vision, digestion, mood, cognition, balance, sensory processing, sleep, emotional wellbeing, and the ability to function in everyday life. For many, migraine becomes an invisible companion that others don’t fully understand—a condition that can alter careers, relationships, family life, confidence, and personal dreams.

During Migraine Awareness Month, we pause to acknowledge not only the challenges faced by migraine sufferers, but also the resilience required to keep showing up while carrying an experience that can be deeply isolating.

But what if the conversation around healing could expand?

Because while symptom relief is essential, healing may ask us to look beyond the immediate pain toward something even more important:

What life are you trying to reclaim?

Audio Version

When Migraine Begins Making the Decisions

Migraine often changes the way we live long before we realize it.

At first, the changes seem practical.

You avoid certain foods.
You cancel a few plans.
You adjust your schedule.
You become cautious about bright spaces, long drives, stress, hormones, travel, social commitments, or anything that might trigger another episode.

But over time, something subtle happens.

Life starts organizing itself around migraine.

You hesitate before saying yes.

You stop planning ahead.

You avoid committing to things you once loved.

And eventually, there may be dreams that quietly move to the back shelf.

That trip you always wanted to take.
The business you wanted to start.
The class you wanted to enroll in.
The book you wanted to write.
The dance class.
The art retreat.
The Tai Chi program.
The volunteer role.
The speaking opportunity.
The travel adventure.

Not because you stopped caring.

But because migraine made uncertainty feel safer than possibility.

And perhaps the most important question becomes:

What have you stopped allowing yourself to imagine?

Healing Needs a Compass

One of the challenges with chronic health concerns is that healing can become entirely focused on symptom suppression.

And while relief absolutely matters, there is a difference between:

“I need this pain to stop.”

and

“I want my life back because there is something meaningful I am here to do.”

That second question changes everything.

Because healing becomes directional.

Purpose creates momentum.

When you know where you want to go, the path becomes clearer.

That doesn’t mean the journey becomes easy.

But it means your healing is no longer defined only by what you are trying to escape.

It becomes anchored in what you are moving toward.

What do you want your life to feel like?

What have you always wanted to learn?

What relationships do you want to enjoy more fully?

What contribution do you want to make?

What joy are you ready to welcome back?

This is where healing becomes deeply personal.

A Tea Ritual for Clarity and Direction

One of the simple practices I return to each day is the ritual of preparing tea.

Not because I expect one herb to solve a complex health challenge, but because healing is rarely about one thing.

Just as the body is an interconnected system, the herbs in a thoughtfully crafted blend work together to create balance and support.

For this Migraine Awareness Month podcast, we are featuring Mintal ClariTEA from the Cape Breton Tea Company.

This blend reminds us that wellness is a collaboration.

Peppermint brings clarity and freshness, helping us release tension and create space for new possibilities. Its spiritual essence encourages graciousness and openness.

Turmeric offers warmth and movement. Long appreciated for its supportive role in overall vitality and balance, its energetic message reminds us that healing is an active journey forward.

Calendula petals bring gentleness and restoration. They invite us to nurture ourselves with compassion and to trust that healing can happen through kindness as much as through effort.

Together, these herbs reflect an important lesson for anyone living with migraine:

We do not need one perfect answer.

We need a community of supports that work together—good healthcare, meaningful goals, nourishing foods, restorative movement, healthy relationships, stress management, and moments of quiet reflection.

As you prepare your own cup of tea, pause for a moment and consider today’s affirmation:

“When we know where we are going, the path clears and we can focus on the little things that matter most.”

Perhaps that path is not simply one of avoiding the next migraine.

Perhaps it is the path back to the life you have been waiting to live.

What If the Body’s Priority Has Been Missed?

One of the most frustrating parts of the migraine journey is the trial-and-error approach.

Try this medication.
Remove this food.
Adjust your hormones.
Sleep more.
Sleep less.
Drink more water.
Reduce stress.
Try magnesium.
Try a different practitioner.
Try a different diagnosis.

Sometimes these interventions help.

Sometimes they don’t.

And sometimes people spend years addressing symptoms without ever uncovering the deeper priority for the body.

This is one reason our Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell podcast conversation with Kelly Richardson is so important.

Kelly Richardson is a bioenergetic wellness professional, educator, and international instructor who helps people explore how stress, trauma, energetic imbalance, and physiological overwhelm may be influencing health patterns—including chronic concerns such as migraine.

Through approaches such as muscle monitoring, biofeedback, bioenergetic wellness and specialized kinesiology, facilitators can explore how the body is prioritizing stress in real time.

This matters because what appears to be “the migraine issue” may not always be the true starting point.

The body may be responding to:

physical strain or structural imbalance

nutritional depletion

inflammatory stress

environmental sensitivities

nervous system dysregulation

emotional overload

unresolved trauma

energetic imbalance

mental overwhelm

chronic compensation patterns

If the intervention is aimed at the wrong priority, progress may feel frustratingly limited.

That doesn’t mean the person has failed.

It may simply mean the body is asking for a different conversation.

Migraine Is Complex—And So Are We

No single herb.
No single therapy.
No single strategy.
No single answer.

Healing rarely works that way.

Because we are multi-dimensional beings.

Physical.
Chemical.
Electrical.
Mental.
Emotional.
Energetic.
Spiritual.

A migraine story may involve more than one of these layers—and often does.

This is why whole-person approaches can offer meaningful insight alongside conventional medical support.

Not because migraines are imagined.

Not because the pain “is all in your head.”

But because the body is an interconnected system.

And when one part of the system is under strain, other systems adapt.

Understanding those patterns can become incredibly empowering.

Learning to Partner With Your Body

One of the most beautiful outcomes of education-based wellness approaches is empowerment.

When people begin learning how the body communicates, fear often softens.

Curiosity grows.

Self-awareness increases.

And healing becomes something done with the body rather than to the body.

This is one reason many people find value in educational systems such as Touch for Health and bioenergetic wellness training, not necessarily to become facilitators, but to better understand stress responses, energy flow, body awareness, and self-support strategies.

Knowledge creates options.

And options create hope.

Reclaiming Your Life

If migraine has shaped your life in ways that feel limiting, perhaps this is your invitation to ask a different question.

Not just:

How do I stop the migraine?

But:

What life am I ready to reclaim?

What would become possible if healing had direction?

What if your body isn’t simply a problem to fix—but a partner helping you find a better path?

When we know where we are going, the path clears.

And perhaps healing begins there.

Every cup of tea has a story.

Some stories begin with the planting of leaves.
Some begin around a kitchen table.
Some travel across oceans.
And some stories begin on a small island, where a young person’s dreams grow into a legacy that continues to inspire generations.

The Cape Breton Tea Company is honoured to introduce:

1897 GenerosiTEA

A blend created to celebrate the story of Obediah E. Smith (1863–1934) — a son of Port Hood Island, a successful tea entrepreneur, and a man whose generosity left lasting gifts for the people of Inverness County.

The affirmation chosen for this blend is:

“Open your heart to hope and optimism for your resilience and pure generosity inspires others.”

A beautiful reflection of a life lived not only for personal success, but for the betterment of community.

Be sure to join us at the Chestico Museum on June 4th at 6:30 pm for the official tea launch, with storytelling, more about Obediah Smith, and tea tasting and pairings. We are celebrating Craft Week with the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design, and are thrilled to be highlighting the craft of being a tea artist and creating specialty tea blends.

From Port Hood Island to the World of Tea

Born in 1863, Obediah E. Smith grew up surrounded by the rugged beauty of Port Hood Island — ocean waves, hardworking families, community connections, and the resilience that shaped many Cape Breton stories.

His path eventually led him into the world of tea through his work with Morse’s Tea Company. After years of dedication, learning, and understanding the tea industry from the inside, Obediah went on to purchase the company himself.

But perhaps the greatest part of his story is not simply what he built.

It is what he gave back.

The success of the company became a way to support the communities and people who had shaped him. His generosity contributed to important initiatives including support for Inverness Hospital, Bayview Education Center, and other programs throughout Inverness County.

His story reminds us that true abundance is not measured only by what we achieve — but by what we are able to share.

A Tea Journey Across Oceans

One of the most romantic and adventurous pieces of Obediah’s story is that he travelled with his new bride to China on a tea shopping expedition.

Imagine stepping into the world of tea plantations — walking among rows of carefully tended plants, meeting growers, smelling freshly processed leaves, and tasting the incredible variety of teas created through generations of knowledge.

Among these teas would have been oolong — a tea celebrated for its complexity, craftsmanship, and balance.

It is this spirit of exploration that inspired 1897 GenerosiTEA.

A blend honouring tradition while inviting us to experience tea in a new way.

Moving Beyond the Kettle on the Stove

Many of us grew up with a familiar tea tradition:

A pot of orange pekoe resting at the back of the stove, ready throughout the day.

It represented hospitality.

A neighbour stopping by.
A conversation beginning.
A problem shared.
A celebration enjoyed.

1897 GenerosiTEA honours that tradition while introducing a new experience through oolong.

Oolong offers depth and character while inviting curiosity — much like Obediah’s own journey from Cape Breton shores into the wider world of tea.

The Essence of the Blend

Oolong: Wisdom & Transformation

Oolong carries the energy of balance.

Partially oxidized between green and black tea, it symbolizes transition — the beauty that happens in the space between where we have been and where we are going.

Spiritually, oolong invites:

adaptability

personal growth

exploration

harmony between tradition and innovation

A perfect tribute to someone who honoured his roots while creating something new.

Rooibos: The Heart of Generosity

Naturally caffeine-free and rich in antioxidants, rooibos brings warmth and grounding.

Its essence represents:

nurturing

community

kindness

connection

It is the comforting embrace within the cup.

A reminder that generosity begins in the heart.

Blueberries & Berries: The Treasures of Home

Across the fields surrounding Port Hood, blueberries connect us back to the land.

Small but powerful, berries remind us of:

abundance found close to home

the gifts nature provides

resilience through changing seasons

the sweetness created through patience

Like the people and stories of Cape Breton, berries carry strength in a small package.

Launching During Craft Week

We are excited to launch 1897 GenerosiTEA on Thursday, June 4 as part of Craft Week, celebrated through the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design.

This launch brings together many threads:

stories of growing up on Port Hood Island
the history and generosity of Obediah E.
We are especially honoured to celebrate the work of the Chestico Museum, whose dedication preserves the stories of the people who lived, worked, dreamed, and created the history of this region.

The Cape Breton Tea Company is proud to support fundraising efforts that help keep these stories alive.

Because when we remember where we came from, we better understand the legacy we are creating.

Chocolate and berries are natural friends.

The oolong adds depth.

The berries add brightness.

The story adds meaning.

What Legacy Are You Creating?

The story of Obediah E. Smith invites us into reflection.

What gifts have others shared that shaped your life?

What skills, kindness, stories, or wisdom have you received?

And what generosity are you offering forward?

Sometimes we think legacy is something created at the end of a journey.

But perhaps legacy is created every day.

In the conversations we have.

The kindness we offer.

The communities we support.

The stories we preserve.

With each cup of 1897 GenerosiTEA, may we remember the resilience of those who came before us — and the generosity we can continue to share.

“Open your heart to hope and optimism for your resilience and pure generosity inspires others.”

A cup of history.
A cup of community.
A cup of generosity.

Migraine Awareness Month

What if healing isn’t about becoming someone new?

What if healing is about remembering who you were before pain convinced you otherwise?

That question sits at the heart of our latest Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell podcast episode featuring author, educator, advocate, and podcast host Amber Horrox.

Amber’s story is one that resonates deeply with anyone who has lived with chronic illness, persistent pain, or a health challenge that slowly changes the landscape of daily life. After living with migraines for nearly two decades, Amber experienced a dramatic shift in 2018 when migraine became a disabling force that could no longer be pushed aside. Like many people navigating chronic health conditions, she found herself facing difficult questions about identity, purpose, and what it meant to move forward when life no longer looked the way she had planned.

Yet what emerged from that experience was not simply a story of illness.

It became a story of voice.

Audio Version

When Pain Becomes a Messenger

One of the themes Amber explores through her work is the idea that chronic illness often asks us to listen differently.

Modern culture encourages us to push through discomfort, work harder, and keep moving forward. Yet many people living with migraine discover that these strategies can become exhausting when the body is asking for something else.

Migraine can interrupt plans, careers, relationships, and personal goals. It can create uncertainty and isolation. It can also become an invitation to slow down long enough to hear what has been overlooked.

Amber’s writing reflects this beautifully. Through her platform, Warrior Within, and her podcast, Your Migraine Story Matters, she creates space for honest conversations about the emotional, mental, and physical realities of living with chronic migraine.

Rather than focusing solely on symptom management, Amber encourages people to reclaim their story.

To reclaim their voice.

To recognize that their experience matters.

For many individuals living with invisible illness, being heard can be one of the most powerful forms of healing.

The Power of Storytelling in Recovery

Stories help us make sense of our lives.

When we tell our story, we begin to organize our experiences, identify patterns, and uncover strengths we may not have recognized before.

Research in psychology has long demonstrated that narrative and meaning-making can support resilience during difficult life transitions. Writing, journaling, and sharing our experiences can help reduce feelings of isolation while strengthening self-awareness.

Amber discovered this through her own healing journey.

Writing became more than expression.

It became a bridge back to herself.

As she explored her experiences through words, she found clarity, connection, and ultimately a pathway to helping others navigate similar challenges.

Through her podcast, books, and educational programs, she now helps people discover that their story is not simply a record of pain—it can become a source of empowerment.

The First Flight: A Symbol for Healing

For this podcast episode, we drew inspiration from one of Canada’s most remarkable moments in innovation and courage: the First Flight of the Silver Dart over Baddeck Bay in 1909.

When the Silver Dart lifted from the ice-covered bay, it represented more than a technological achievement.

It represented possibility.

It represented trust in a vision that others could not yet see.

It represented preparation, belief, and collaboration.

Healing often follows a similar path.

Rarely do we see the entire journey ahead.

Instead, we take one step.

One choice.

One conversation.

One supportive practice.

One day at a time.

And slowly, what once felt impossible begins to feel attainable.

Like the Silver Dart, healing requires preparation.

Like the Silver Dart, healing requires belief.

And like the Silver Dart, healing often requires collaboration with others who help us see what is possible.

A Tea Ritual for Courage and Clarity

Every episode of the podcast includes a mindful tea ritual, and for Amber’s conversation we selected a blend inspired by the spirit of the First Flight.

The combination of Pu-erh Tea and Lemon Verbena creates a beautiful balance between grounding and upliftment.

Pu-erh: Rooted Transformation

Pu-erh is an aged and fermented tea that reminds us that healing cannot always be rushed.

It teaches patience.

Integration.

Trust in the process.

Its spiritual essence encourages us to remain grounded while life unfolds around us.

Lemon Verbena: Lightness and Renewal

Lemon Verbena brings brightness to the blend.

Known for its calming and soothing qualities, it offers a gentle reminder that healing can include moments of ease and lightness.

Where Pu-erh roots us, Lemon Verbena helps us lift.

Together they reflect the balance so many migraine sufferers seek: stability and possibility, grounding and hope.

This Episode’s Affirmation

“Preparation, belief, and collaboration provide an aerial focus for success.”

As the tea steeps, we are reminded that healing is not something we force.

It is something we nurture.

Your Migraine Story Matters

One of the greatest gifts Amber offers through her work is the reminder that no one should have to navigate migraine alone.

Whether you are newly diagnosed, have been living with migraines for years, or are supporting someone who experiences them, your experience matters.

Your questions matter.

As summer arrives and the natural world bursts into vibrant life, there is no better time to take your Tai Chi practice outdoors. Whether it is a quiet beach at sunrise, a forest trail, a backyard garden, or a favourite park, nature offers an incredible classroom for cultivating mindfulness, balance, and vitality.

Tai Chi is often described as “meditation in motion,” but when practiced in nature, it becomes something even more profound. The rhythm of the waves, the movement of leaves in the wind, the warmth of the sun, and the songs of birds all become partners in the practice. Rather than moving against our environment, we learn to move with it.

Environmental Mindfulness: Becoming Part of the Landscape

Modern life often separates us from the natural world. We spend hours indoors, surrounded by screens, schedules, and constant stimulation. Tai Chi invites us to slow down and reconnect—not only with ourselves, but with the living environment around us.

Environmental mindfulness is the practice of becoming fully aware of the natural world as we move through it. During Tai Chi, we can notice:

The sensation of the earth beneath our feet.

The movement of air across our skin.

The changing patterns of light and shadow.

The sounds of birds, insects, and water.

The subtle energy of the landscape around us.

Instead of trying to block out distractions, we welcome them into our awareness. Nature becomes a teacher of presence.

A retro video

Check out this video from the pandemic broadcasts. 108 days straight of Tai Chi to support each other. So many great tidbits in this video. Enjoy!

Learning from Nature’s Wisdom

Tai Chi was inspired by observations of nature. Ancient practitioners watched flowing rivers, swaying trees, drifting clouds, and the movements of animals. They recognized that strength does not come from force alone—it comes from adaptability, balance, and flow.

Nature reminds us:

Trees bend with the wind rather than resisting it.

Water finds its path around obstacles.

Seasons teach us that growth, rest, renewal, and change are all necessary.

As we practice Tai Chi outdoors, these lessons become tangible experiences rather than abstract ideas.

The Health Benefits of Outdoor Practice

Research continues to show that spending time in nature supports physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Combined with Tai Chi, the benefits can be amplified.

Outdoor Tai Chi may help:

Reduce stress and anxiety.

Improve balance and coordination.

Enhance concentration and mental clarity.

Support healthy breathing patterns.

Increase feelings of calm and emotional resilience.

Foster a greater sense of connection and belonging.

Many practitioners report feeling more energized and grounded after practicing outdoors, even if only for a few minutes.

Creating Your Outdoor Tai Chi Ritual

You do not need a perfect setting to enjoy Tai Chi in nature.

Consider:

Practicing in your backyard before breakfast.

Visiting a local beach or waterfront.

Finding a quiet corner of a park.

Taking a Tai Chi pause during a hiking adventure.

Practicing in the garden before beginning yard work.

Start with five or ten mindful minutes. Let nature set the pace.

Notice what changes when you move with the environment rather than simply moving through it.

A Blue Zone Perspective

Many of the world’s Blue Zone communities spend significant time outdoors as part of daily life. Movement is naturally woven into their routines through gardening, walking, farming, and social connection.

Tai Chi offers a similar opportunity. It is not exercise that must be endured; it is movement that nourishes. When practiced outdoors, it becomes a bridge between personal wellness and environmental connection.

In a world that often asks us to hurry, nature reminds us to slow down.

Tai Chi helps us listen.

Together, they create a pathway toward greater vitality, resilience, and joy.

Your Invitation

This month, find a place outdoors that inspires you.

Take a few moments to breathe deeply.

Feel the earth beneath your feet.

Move gently.

Listen carefully.

And discover what nature has been waiting to teach you.

Where will your Tai Chi practice take you this summer?

June is Migraine Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding, reducing stigma, and offering support to the millions of people worldwide who live with migraine every day.

Migraine is often misunderstood. It is not simply a headache. It is a complex neurological condition that affects more than one billion people globally and is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. For many individuals, migraines impact work, family life, relationships, sleep, mental health, and overall quality of life.

At the Greenwell Center for Holistic Health and through the Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell podcast, we believe healing conversations matter. Throughout the month of June, we are dedicating our podcast series to exploring migraines from a broader perspective—one that looks beyond symptom suppression and asks deeper questions about regulation, resilience, recovery, and whole-person wellness.

There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Migraine Story

One of the greatest challenges with migraines is that no two experiences are exactly alike.

While research continues to explore neurological pathways, genetics, hormones, inflammation, environmental triggers, and lifestyle factors, many people discover that their healing journey becomes highly personalized. What works for one person may not work for another.

This is why our Migraine Awareness Month series brings together guests with diverse experiences and expertise. Together, we explore practical tools, personal stories, and holistic approaches that may help people better understand their own migraine patterns and support their body’s natural healing processes.

Our goal is not to replace medical care. Rather, it is to expand the conversation and help individuals discover additional pathways that may support their wellness journey.

This Month’s Podcast Themes

Throughout June, we will be sharing conversations that explore migraines through several important lenses:

Understanding the Body’s Priorities

Many people living with migraines spend years experimenting with treatments, diets, supplements, medications, and lifestyle changes.

What if the body has priorities that can help guide the healing process?

Our guests explore how stress regulation, nervous system balance, emotional resilience, movement, hydration, sleep quality, and energetic awareness may influence migraine patterns. By understanding the body’s signals, we may be able to reduce the trial-and-error process and create more personalized approaches to recovery.

The Power of Story and Metaphor

One of our featured conversations is with Linda from The Mindful Migraine, who shares her remarkable journey from experiencing nearly daily migraines to finding greater freedom through mindfulness and holistic practices.

Linda’s doctoral work explores metaphors and how the language we use shapes our healing experience.

When someone says:

“I’m drowning.”

“I’m carrying too much.”

“Healing feels like an uphill battle.”

They are revealing more than symptoms. They are expressing how they are experiencing their life and their healing journey.

Could changing the metaphor begin changing the experience?

This fascinating conversation explores how language influences mindset, emotional regulation, and even the way we perceive our path toward wellness.

Audio Version

Mindful Migraine Blog

Movement as Medicine

Another recurring theme throughout the series is the role of movement.

Tai Chi, gentle stretching, breath awareness, and mindful movement practices can help cultivate regulation within the nervous system. These practices encourage us to move from a state of constant vigilance into one of awareness, flow, and adaptability.

Many people with migraines discover that learning to notice tension patterns before they become overwhelming can be a powerful piece of prevention.

Rather than forcing the body, mindful movement teaches us to listen to it.

Releasing the Fight

One of the most profound lessons shared by our guests is that healing is not always about trying harder.

Sometimes healing begins when we soften.

Sometimes it begins when we release patterns of tension, over-responsibility, perfectionism, or constant vigilance.

Sometimes healing begins by allowing ourselves to stop fighting and start listening.

This theme is beautifully reflected in one of the Cape Breton Tea Company blends featured this month: Releasing the Warrior.

A Tea Ritual for Migraine Awareness

Each podcast episode includes a tea ritual designed to encourage mindfulness and self-care.

For our conversation with Linda, we feature Releasing the Warrior, a blend created to support the Wood Element in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Today’s affirmation is:

“My ability to let the fight go begins the healing process.”

Two herbs highlighted in this blend are parsley and coriander:

Parsley symbolizes purification, clearing, and renewal.

Coriander offers cooling energy, clarity, and gentle emotional release.

Whether you enjoy tea or another mindful ritual, creating moments of pause throughout the day can become an important part of supporting balance and resilience.

Small Steps Can Create Meaningful Change

Throughout Migraine Awareness Month, we invite you to remember that healing is rarely a single event.

It is often a collection of small moments:

A better night’s sleep.

A few minutes of breathing.

A walk outdoors.

A Tai Chi practice.

A nourishing meal.

A supportive conversation.

A new perspective.

A different story.

Each small step helps create the conditions for greater balance and wellbeing.

Join Us This June

We invite you to follow along as we release our Migraine Awareness Month podcast series featuring practical tools, inspiring stories, and compassionate conversations designed to support those living with migraine.

Whether you personally experience migraines, support someone who does, or work in a wellness profession, we hope these conversations offer encouragement, insight, and hope.

Because healing is not always about doing more.

Sometimes healing begins by understanding ourselves differently.

Sometimes it begins by changing the language.

Sometimes it begins by letting the fight go.

There is something beautiful about giving ourselves permission to pause.

Not because the work is done.
Not because everything on the list has been checked off.
Not because we have earned it.

But simply because we are worthy of receiving moments of nourishment throughout the day.

This is the heart of the Sweet Treats blend from the Cape Breton Tea Company — a tea created to remind us that comfort, sweetness, and restoration can be part of our everyday rituals.

The affirmation chosen for this blend is:

“I am nourishing myself and my day with this compassionate pause of goodness.”

Each cup becomes an invitation.

Slow down.
Breathe deeply.
Taste the moment.
Receive.

A Sweet Treat Without the Rush

Many of us reach for comfort when our energy dips — a coffee, a sweet snack, something to push us through the next part of the day.

But what if we could create a different kind of pause?

Sweet Treats brings forward the deep, roasted richness of chicory, creating a satisfying flavour experience that feels similar to coffee, but with a gentler rhythm.

Chicory has been enjoyed traditionally as a coffee alternative because of its earthy, grounding flavour. In this blend, it creates warmth and depth while pairing beautifully with the natural sweetness of fruit and spice.

Combined with oolong tea, Sweet Treats offers a gentle lift. Oolong naturally contains antioxidants and a lower caffeine profile than many traditional caffeinated beverages, creating an opportunity to enjoy focus and flavour without the same intensity of a strong coffee experience.

A moment of presence rather than a moment of pushing.

A compassionate pause.

The Spiritual Essence of Sweet Treats

Every ingredient brings its own story and energetic invitation.

Oolong: The Dance of Balance

Oolong sits beautifully between green and black tea — a symbol of harmony and transformation.

Spiritually, oolong invites us to:

find balance between doing and being

move through transitions gracefully

remain flexible as life unfolds

It reminds us that we are always evolving.

Just like tea leaves transforming through their preparation process, we too are shaped into something beautiful through our experiences.

Apple: The Sweetness of Life

Apples have long represented nourishment, wisdom, and abundance.

Their essence invites:

comfort

gratitude

heart connection

appreciation for simple joys

Apple reminds us that sweetness does not always need to be searched for.

Sometimes we only need to notice it.

Currants: Little Gems of Vitality

Small but mighty, currants bring richness and colour to the blend.

They represent:

inner strength

vitality

resilience

celebrating the gifts within small moments

They remind us that tiny acts of self-care, repeated daily, create powerful change.

Papaya: Warmth & Joy

Papaya brings a tropical brightness — a reminder of sunshine, playfulness, and ease.

Its essence encourages:

openness

creativity

joy

allowing ourselves to receive pleasure

Life is not only something to accomplish.

It is something to experience.

Cinnamon: The Comfort of Inner Warmth

Cinnamon has been cherished across cultures for its warming qualities.

Its spiritual essence invites:

protection

comfort

courage

connection to the heart

The aroma alone can remind us of kitchens, celebrations, family recipes, and memories.

A beautiful reminder that nourishment includes emotion.

Maple Syrup: The Wisdom of the Trees

Maple carries the story of patience.

The tree gathers, stores, transforms, and releases its sweetness in perfect timing.

Maple reminds us:

There is sweetness within us too.

Sometimes we simply need the right season, the right pause, and the right moment to let it flow.

Sweet Treats Latte Recipe
